Did not have great bowlers or batsman is a massive caveat - if we really want to go by pure skill, then Ganguly was the best captain in any format 'IF he had the best resources at his disposal'. He had the aggression of VK and shrewd mind of MSD.

Virat might not be a great captain, especially in ODIs, but he does deserve a fair bit of credit for the fast bowling resources we have now. From the onset he had insisted on having a pack of fast bowlers for overseas Tests. He brought back Jadeja and Ashwin in wicket taking roles in overseas Tests in SENA, because Ashwin was definitely getting lost overseas under MSD (one of the very few flaws of MSD). Problem with VK is he is a poor judge of the wicket as a captain and ends up making questionable team selections - often too aggressive just for the sake of being aggressive. Which is odd because as a batsman he has an amazing understanding of the game.

I would say that his problem have always been his short-sightedness regarding the roles of a few certain players. I was surprised to know about a thing that I found out yesterday. KL Rahul has scored the most runs at the top of the order for India in the last 5 years. There have been 13 players that have played as an opener for India in last 5 years and India have tried most opening pair in the said period in the entire world!!!! It has been 6 years since we a struggling to find a proper no.6 for the Test format. Karun Nair should've been our long term option at that position, but then again our selectors IYKWIM.

I probably like his aggression as Captain but there is no strategy behind it which is frustrating to see. The worst thing is that he doesn't back his own decision and at times media pressure have played it's role as well. He is very receptive towards the team balance when there is some sort of pressure from the media. For eg:- Dropping Rahane from the South Africa tour, dropping Pujara to accommodate an in-form Rahul in the side in England. Also including Kuldeep at Lord's. You can see that he is not even sure about whether he needs to open with Rohit or give Rahul that spot for the T20Is with the WT20 around the corner. I am not too sure about the impact appendicitis surgery will have on Rahul's fitness but he does need to play as an opener in the WT20.

In my view MS was the most technical of the three captains with his field settings and bowler rotation, making him a great limited overs captain, possibly the best of our era. Forgive me but last I know the coach had a major say in the team selection, (final 11) has this changed?

He has the best bowlers!!!!
Not necessary, as Randy pointed out in a post above Virat insisted on fast bowling stocks abroad, and ‘brought back Ashwin etc in to wicket taking roles. An argument to which you havent countered, so your point is invalid! Lets not forget Kumble/Harbhajhan/Zaheer/Srinath etc!

That team was as successful as Kohli's team. There are atleast 4 bowlers in the current Indian team averaging just about 25 in Test matches. Also we could give credits to India's domestic structure for producing a load of exciting pace bowlers. The place for seamers in the current Indian side has an immense competition. And I've said it in the past that the current Indian test team is successful inspite of not having their best pacer(Bhuvi) for about 4 years now!!!!

Fully agree, better pace options playing for India now, without a great or even good captain in Kohli these bowlers wouldnt be averaging so good. West Indies had two legendary fast bowlers in Walsh/Ambrose for many years and failed to make the top 3 in test rankings for years, similar story with Sri Lanka having Chaminda/Murali. Insinuating that India’s success over the last several years is solely due to a ‘great’ crop of fast bowers is nonsense.

Well let me be honest, I have been a strong supporter of Kohli's leadership in the past and I have always backed him inspite of whatever blunders he committed or whatever nonsense strategy he came up with. I used to always say that give that guy some time and he would definitely improve. But then there is a limit of having patience with someone and I no longer want to be patient with that Captain. If you don't believe in whatever I said then you can ask any active Indian member on this forum whether I have backed him or not. Good day!!!! :wave

When odds are in his favour. But when odds turn against him, he loses his cool.

Fair enough.

Really not sure why someone tagged you, poor post (majority of your posting is) that adds nothing to discussion other than express your unwarranted dislike for Virat. If we made a PC team? Virat has the highest win percentage of all Indian captains in tests and only Punter and Waugh has a higher one! Ganguly had 5 or more world class batsmen at his disposal for most of his tenure, Virat has only himself as a mark batsman.

Oh what would I ever do if I didn't have your opinion to validate my thoughts? I don't know why I was tagged. Perhaps someone else thinks my thoughts might be worth something?

The funny thing is that if validation counts for anything, then it seems people tend to agree with my point of view than yours. What fools they must be!

Sorry to think differently to you and your data. Some of us aren't brain dead yet and can use our brains to make decisions and opinions in life rather than solely rely on a computer.

Honestly! I literally rolled off my bed in laughter reading this!

Youre just upset cuz they never offered the RCB captaincy to Abraham.

That has got nothing to do with Kohli. Also he never wanted AB to Captain. He is just admirer of AB. Also I clearly remember once he said that AB was awful Captain even though he is an extremely good batsman. Just as you can have your opinion others too can have their own. This is a public forum and everyone can share their views without being disrespectful towards others.
