Rock Music Thread

I'm gonna go ahead and throw Joy Division into the mix, their music is fantastic, and Ian Curtis is(Was) one of the best songwriters in rock

I'd say that Elliott Smith is/was also one of the greatest songwriters in rock. Some of his lyrics are awesome.

Joy Division are great aswell, so are NOFX mentioned a page back.
Anyone else listened to Bad Religion, I rate them quite highly aswell.

Joy Divison were one of the greatest bands ever. Only torn about because of Curtis' pyschological issues and personal trauma's, namely his epilepcy. Carrying on the darker music theme, Interpol are still epic although the last album was a bit of a letdown. And White Lies debut album is an absolute cracker.

Green Day? Emo music much? :p

Green Day Emo?

Now, I don't really like Green Day but I have to say that they were around LOOOONNNGG before the word "emo" was even around.

Don't really see how you could percieve Green Day to be "emo". They're politically defiant in some songs and yet "emo" with the others? Seems like quite a change.

Just because they wrote some more emotional songs (Boulevard of Broken Dreams,Wake me up when September ends, Give me Novacaine etc.) doesn't make Green Day emo.

Okay Simon.

I never thought I'd say this but everytime I hear America's Suitehearts I like it more each time. I'm angry at myself :p

Wearing eye-liner doesn't dub them emo as such, more so 'what the hell'?
Their label and themselves said something along the lines of, we are becoming dried out rockers nearing our 40's, what is our target market now?
Let's lyrically base our music upon rebellion, find a theme (War in Iraq etc) and market our image that will appeal to the teenage market while attempting to not alienate our past fans.
So we get eyeliner, jeans that are too tight and trying to stay fresh in the market with angst.

American Idiot their last CD did remarkably well, but I wouldn't dub them emo. They originated as a punk pop band in the early 90's. Around before the emo tag crept in. I'd say their image poses to the emo kid market.

But then again I'm way out of this league so just basing this on logic and observation.

I don't think American Idiot deserved all of the abuse it gets, but it's overplayed aswell. It's a good album, and has some great songs on it, but they got rid of the punk aspect of their music (They're now pop rock instead of pop punk).

The whole "guyliner" and skinny jeans thing is probably something of a marketing move, but it's up to them how they dress. I think it suites them actually, I don't think they sold out, but the message wasn't a new one, and some of the songs are pretty generic. The reason it was so well receieved was because it was Green Day, and it was an unexpected move from them.

The songs and the storyline are darker than their old albums, and even I thought the Jesus of Suburbia video was overdoing it abit (Still love it though). Compared to the frat boy humour of their older albums, it's somewhat more mature and more deeply written. It's a very lyrical album, and you can extract several meanings from the words, it's great as a collection of songs, but it's best as a chronological story.

I have to say if they had contiuned with their old pop punk style it wouldn't have been the same as Dookie,Insomniac and so on. They're all nearing 40, you can't write songs about madturbation and living in squats for ever. I don't think they have the same energy on stage as they once did, and what's the point in a pop punk song with no energy?.

Billie Joe has said that the new album (Released sometime this year) is going to be a kinda "power pop" album. Sounds interesting but I'm somewhat cautious about whether they will fully go down the "Whiny emo pop" route.
