Delighted with Wales' autumn international series. Losing to South Africa was the one more disappointing result (and I was there) as we had a great great chance to overthrow the world champions...but progress is progress, and it was a damn sight closer than our previous encounters post-World Cup.
Beating Canada was obviously a must, although was far from impressive, running out 34-13 winners in the end with an absolutely super breakaway try from our tryline in the dying minutes of the match.
Then came New Zealand, by far the toughest challenge on the tour. It was really exciting, and the Welsh response to the Haka was truly chilling! Wales played sensationally in the first half to have a 9-6 HT lead, but, New Zealand just overawed everyone with their sensational play in the 2nd half to run clear of Wales, and win by, many would say an unjustified, margin of 29-9.
Finally, the Aussies, the last chance to get a SH scalp this autumn. It was a ding-dong kind of match with both teams having chances, yet Wales showed how far they had come since the World Cup failure with the incredible offloading ability which kept the Australian defence on its toes and the great play in the contact area, leading to what could've been quite a large win for Wales, as it happened, the Aussies had the last word and kept the pressure on Wales till the death, but the Welsh ran out 21-18 victors.
Bring on the Six Nations 2009!
