SA20 | Total domination by the now two-time champions!

I’m surprised that the likes of Bird, Parsons and Simelane weren’t picked. Bird for instance is more of a classical batter but he’s still worth taking a punt on and Parsons is a very economical spinner who can hold his bat. Boast seems to be an online favourite too given his skill with both bat and ball and his aggressive style.

Not sure why the analysts seem to think MI (ugh) Cape Town have no leader in the squad when they’ve got Rassie who was Bavuma‘s backup in the domestic SA team, Rashid Khan who’s been a Afghani captain and Livo’s whose also got some captaincy experience. Apparently they need Eoin to truly lead the side though. :rolleyes

Bavuma feels absolutely like a JSK pick waiting to be made but I hope he goes to a franchise where he’ll be a first teamer rather than a reserve. van Biljon, Jonker, Lubbe are all yet to appear too. It is unbelievable that Dupavillon did not get a single bid at base price, the man’s done decently in the CPL as an overseas pick and apparently he isn’t good enough for his own country’s league?! He’s an absolutely class pacer too, was better than Nortje before his injury woes. Mulder should also have been picked, quite surprising that he hasn’t got in.

Did Sunrisers pass on the local Roelofsen and sign Rossington an overseas instead?

Some good drama, finally!

Can’t believe that the Capitals dudes can’t do basic arithmetic though. Fleming masterclass yet again.

The Capitals having issue with capital

Lizaad Williams is probably the first reserve international pacer for SA behind their quartet and he’s bought for nearly his base price by the Super Kings management. They’ve always done something like this in every auction and pulled an absolute bargain out of nowhere.
He's also been utter dogshit for Northants this season

Yeah he seems to have been quite poor there for some reason. Surprising.

what happened?

Capitals were incensed that they couldn’t bid more than what Super Kings did for Donavon Ferreira after it was pointed out that they wouldn’t be able to complete their squad with the remaining purse if their bid were to be successful. Think Royals got into the action too. Graeme Smith had to intervene and mediate the argument.

Capitals argued that they would have made a bid earlier for Ferreira if they know about the rule of having to complete your squad with the money left which sounds like absolute malarkey because Super Kings would have outbid everyone in any case.

Bavuma and Phehlukwayo go unsold yet again. Unbelievable.

There’s no way there’s around 60 South African players better than these two in T20s. To not have your skipper be a part of your brand new dazzling T20 league must be embarrassing for CSA and Bavuma will likely also feel bad about this entire fiasco.

Was a pretty fun auction! It was challenging to understand the dynamics of the buys from the South African currency perspective, but overall it felt like another IPL auction!

Kinda really like the squad JSK have assembled:

Jo'burg Super Kings: Faf du Plessis, Gerald Coetzee, Maheesh Theekshana, Romario Shepherd, Harry Brook, Janneman Malan, Reeza Hendricks, Kyle Verreynne, George Garton, Alzarri Joseph, Leus du Plooy, Lewis Gregory, Lizaad Williams, Donavon Ferreira, Nandre Burger, Malusi Siboto, Caleb Seleka

They've gone all out on pace, and only Theekshana and Caleb Seleka are the specialist spinners in the squad (Du Plooy bowls some left arm spin; though from his Cricinfo bowling records, doesnt seem to be as regular a bowler, or maybe my judgement is wrong). Some serious tonkers of the ball in there, with Ferreira, Brook Shepherd, Garton, etc. Would be interesting to see how JSK and Fleming mould this team. They've a solid leader in Faf, who should feel all the more in his comfort zone with his home league. I wont be surprised if JSK start off their fortunes at the #SAT20 really well.

It is truly unbelievable.... Still I can't able to find logic behind this...

This is most logical tweet explaining about Bavuma's unsold scenario...

If true this just proves my point about how some of them must have just had their cricinfo web pages open during the auction. :p

The author is missing out on an interesting point though. Reeza was picked for what, nearly two million rand? Now he does have domestic pedigree via the MSL too (not sure of Bavuma’s numbers there) but prior to the last two international series his strike-rate in T20s was 125 and he had very similar international numbers to Bavuma too. Did those two series suddenly make him a crucial player to not be missed out on whilst Bavuma turns into a forgotten player? Roy and Morgan going for the big bucks ahead of Bavuma is also puzzling given their current form. All eyeballs will be on him during the India series and the WT20, hope he does well there and leaves these owners scratching their collective heads.

Overall though, gotta say that this auction was far better than the average IPL one with more sensible buys at reasonable prices comparatively with a few usual auction meta game quirks that led to some being overpriced for their perceived value such as Ferreira, Stubbs and Magala for instance. Feel like some of the overseas pros will be aggrieved at not being picked when others have been done so.
