Second Round - Italy vs Australia

In the Second-Half yes, but in the First-Half, Italy did deserve the lead.
WTF!!?? From my view it was very much even!!

This is why soccer will never be a dominant code in australia

In AFL we would of been up by 10 goals
In NRL we would of been up by 5 trys
In tennis we would of been up by two sets

Yet in soccer a cheating dive can determine a nations spot in a quarter final

And the team that has been dominating gets kicked out by a dive. Absolute BS

Chipperfield was most impressive for the Aussies today

Cahill missed a few sitters with his head as well. But the match has finished and Australlia are out - they can't look back.

@ Stevo, Schwarzer had a lot to do in the First-Half, Italy had the better of that half but Australlia did incredibly well in the Second. A tale of two halfs, that's pretty much the story.

No one's trying to justify the penalty decision, but to claim that Australia were the only team in the game, as you seem to, would be a highly incorrect understanding of the game. Italy were clearly the dominant side in the first half and they could have easily been up 2 goals.

They were "clearly" the dominant side????? I agree that they had the edge but they weren't "clearly" dominant. And so what?? Australia was 3 times more dominant in the second half and we also missed a couple of goals like you said Italy missed.

But that's not the point. The point is, how can a ref give a penalty in the 93rd minute when its clearly not a penalty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a side not. Kev = hero

Lots of editing here, remember language guys.

For me Australia didnt do anything to deserve to win. Once Italy had their man sent off Australia should have attacked more but they just didnt commit in the final third, Italy Just soaked up the pressure, something they are very good at. Shame it ended the way it did though.

I think there are too many directives from FIFA telling ref's what to do in this world cup. They should be allowed to make their own decisions, not follow stupid crakdowns, It seems to me that if you make a tackle miss the ball and take the player its almost an automatic card. Its ruining games but I dont think its fair to blame the ref's.

Huh???

It's ruining the game but you don't think its fair to blame the ref?? Who else is there to blame for the worst decision there could ever be. The ball?

And if your saying that "FIFA" are the ones telling the refs to crack down on decisions like this then they are corrupt.

No I blame the directives that FIFA hand out to the refs. They arent allowed to use common sense any more. Having said that, if you go to ground like that then you are going to conceed a penalty so maybe you should look towards lucas neil a bit too.

Edit: FIFA are not corrupt they just over manage the game.

Oh yer, your right. Lucas Neill is human and lost his balance and did nothing wrong whilst the Italian player saw a brilliant opputunity to win a academy award and go "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, down i go, country hero"

If thats the case, Fifa isn't the problem, the sport is.

If I were you stevo, I would take a long look at Lucas Neill in this one. The simple fact is he made a mistake and it cost him.

You reckon i havn't?? The replay has been played over and over and over and over again down here and it was definetly not a penalty!

Even the international commentators couldn't understand how it was a penalty!

The mistake was him going to ground. An experienced Premiership player should know better than to do that, in the box, in the 93rd minute. You may say it wasn't a penalty, but Neill had to make that mistake of going to ground, in order for the penalty to be given. He did something wrong, and it got punished.

Well I thought it was a decent shout for a penalty, although with the Italians you never know.

The Australians did well enough to make it till here.

I've yet got to see the highlights of this match, but I saw Materazzi getting a red card. :laugh I was predicting in the previous match he would get it, then it didn't happen. But this time Lady Fortune helped him. But too bad for Australia. They really worked hard to get into this second round. Also read that Totti hit a penalty in the dying minutes. That's very unfortunate.
