Draft: Selection: Impossible

Okay, I'm going to give it 24 hours before I tell everyone which mission they've got and announce a draft order.

In the meantime I'm going to cheekily ping a few Cricket Discussion regulars to see if they're interested: @Ahmad94 @asprin @Bigby Wolf @blockerdave @GuyIncognito @Pinch hitter @SaiSrini @ShamiLoverGlipGlops @T.J.Hooker II @Verified Enigma and @wasteyouryouth - if this does seem like something you might enjoy, then there's still plenty of room
Unfortunately do not have the time with my league and the sim work and real life work. Thank you for the tag though.

I'm probably out, don't really have much time these days. Would be unfair if I said yes and couldn't commit to it properly. Sorry :sadx2:

Good evening everyone. Now that you've all received your PMs, we can begin the draft! (also if you've not received the PM, please let me know and I'll fix that right away)

Draft Rules
  1. When signing up, please state your preference for either an Easy, Intermediate, Hard or Impossible mission, and indicate if you have a strong preference for a particular mission. Please note that it is possible that due to demand, you may not get the mission you hoped.
  2. Once the draft order is announced, it will be everyone's responsibility to keep us on track. That means that if you make a pick, you have to tag the next person to make a pick.
  3. If you make an invalid pick, it will be replaced by me with a forfeit pick that meets your mission.
  4. You have 24 hours from the time you are tagged to make a pick. Failure to do so will see your pick filled by a forfeit pick chosen by me.
  5. If I break my own rules, I will still be subjected to an appropriate forfeit pick.
  6. All picks must conform to your mission.
I would also like to make sure everyone knows that if anyone has three skipped picks then we'll allow their picks to be jumped in future rounds of the draft just to keep things running. Hopefully it never comes to that for anyone though.

I intend to absolutely maximise first pick in the draft:

:eng: :wk: BOB TAYLOR

Bob Taylor's career spanned an era littered with elite English wicket-keepers: Alan Knott, David Bairstow, Paul Downton, Bruce French, Jack Richards and Geoff Humpage (who didn't ever get to play a Test). That he racked up 57 Test caps speaks volumes about just how good he was with the big gloves on, especially considering his deeply forgettable batting average of 16.28. However, his batting does have value in my team: Taylor averaged exactly 60 balls per time dismissed in Test cricket, and that could make for an invaluable partnership alongside the last recognised batter in the team.

He will provisionally slot in at number seven, though the exact balance of my team is up in the air until later on.

:saf: :ar: Clive Rice

About the only thing Clive Rice struggled with was his hairline. While he was mainly excluded from international cricket, barring a few ODIs after readmission - where he captained his country, funnily enough - he was a truly accomplished first-class player, scoring 48 hundreds and 26000 runs, as well as taking 900 wickets at 22. Everyone remembers Mike Procter as the biggest loss for international cricket caused by South Africa's apartheid ban, and while that's a fair assessment, Rice is not far behind at all.

I don't know where he will be in my XI yet; he could bat anywhere between 3 and 7 depending on what other names I pick.

The prestigious Planet Cricket Awards 2023 T20 League Player of the Year award winner with the description reading as a player who struck fear into the heart of the bowlers around the world.

Heinrich Klaasen

A wicketkeeper-batter known for his belligerent six-hitting. His phenomenal numbers against slow bowling - he struck at 191 and averaged 132 against spin in the 2023 IPL - have made him a valuable player among T20 franchises. Has an amazing year in 2023.

My first recruit for this mission will be none other than :wi: :ar: Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers or Garry Sobers as he's known to the wider cricket community. An absolute genius of a cricketer, there's an argument for him being the most valuable cricketer ever in test history. He was a brilliant close fielder, a top five test batter in the history of test cricket and a bowler who made it into the side purely for his bowling initially and still holds a good enough record to be considered among the top 150. There are only three batting positions that he didn't fill in his test career and he could bowl in three different styles. A complete all-rounder of a cricketer and there's no doubt why he's considered as the greatest all-rounder by many to have graced this sport till date.

It's too early to give him a batting position in this side without seeing the other recruits... which still serves me fine given that he's averaging over fifty in all of the positions from three to seven. With the ball... his incredible versatility will be very useful. Imagine seeing off his new ball spell only for him to come over ten overs later to bowl left arm orthodox because you've got a weakness to it.

@Bigby Wolf is up next.

Doomed, I am
In all seriousness, the fact that so many of the rules mean certain player pools don't overlap will really help people feel less doomed as the draft wears on.

Unless of course they picked an IMPOSSIBLE mission, in which case they chose this life
