Solve your computer problem with the help of experts!

It's unlikely to be a soundcard issue anyway. If it's software i'd expect to see something in the event logs, although not always the case. If it is hardware related, its really tricky to suggest anything other than trial and error replacement. Not so bad if you have another PC, but not especially helpful if you don't. If you can tie it down to video as the problem you could try disabling the soundcard in the bios and seeing if that makes a difference. Did you change the videocard because of this or did it start after changing it? Have you tried re-seating it? is the new videocard brand new or is it someone's cast off? You can get odd things happinging like lockups when you get bad connections in the slots, you could try cleaning the contactors with some switch cleaner or isopropynol alcohol (neither of which you will have) so you could try using a pencil eraser, I hear they clean electrical contacts up quite nicely, although I have never tried myself.

It's a brand new card upgraded to meet the AC09 spec. By re-seating it I'm assuming you mean take and out and put it back in?
This may or may not be relevant but PowerDVD no longer works; it just skips frames and jumps around. I can play DVDs fine in WMP.

ah, maybe its software then, as you are having problems with videos and now power dvd, maybe reloading codec packs, I'm sure you know what to do there.

hi guys, i was having a big problem with my acer desktop, It had windows vista installed in it and didnt come with a format cd. One day it said that there is no operating system in it, i dont have a vista cd to format it but i have a windows xp cd at home. I tried to install it but when it opens up a blue screen comes up and i cant do anytinh after that. please help me im without a computer. thanks

Nothing that stupid, no.
From my experience, I can say it is more or less a RAM problem. The symptoms are:
Your computer freezes with zero response | Your computer freezes with the motherboard speaker beeping continuously | System freezes at bootup

Mem tests are not always accurate, try to single out the problem by replacing the generic RAM. Also if you have two modules of RAM, try interchanging their position (only helps if both the modules are of different frequency).

Haha, I am n00b at these but google will surely help you.

You shouldn't have replied then in the first place, anyone can use google. He has come here for help, if he could have solved it through google he wouldn't be asking on the forums.

Colin, what DDR do you need? How many slots? I've got 3 spare DDR at 256MB and 1 at 512 MB if it's helpful. (I think I have those! :D)

Yeah this is a good idea as long as you can lend/sell it to him. But the frequencies must match :doh

It's not freezing at startup and it's not the motherboard speaker beeping.
I've reverted my RAM to what I was using before I upgraded to 1GB.

I have 2 slots and 2 256s and 2 512s.

I've downgraded my computer to before any of this happened. I've replaced the HD 3850 with a 7500LE, the 1GB RAM with 512MB RAM and taken out the USB 2.0 PCI card.
Still getting the exact same problem, computer freezes and sound loops. I tried to reinstall windows but Evesham only gave me a recover install CD which only seems to boot if something is actually wrong with Windows.
I'd like to format my HDD and reinstall windows but I can't with the XP CD I have. I've also got a friend who is going to sell me and install for me an up-to-date motherboard but I don't know the exact spec yet. In the meantime I'll keep banging my head against the wall. The only component now in my rig that wasn't here a week ago is the power supply. Seeing as that is a 550W one compared to the 400W one that was there before I don't think that would be causing the freezes but I know that PSUs can.

Don't get me wrong but is there a possibility that you damaged the motherboard while you upgraded your system? I mean while you were fitting some new components, you know... Once I was cleaning my motherboard with a soft brush and without my knowledge a small transistor came off the board and that was the last time that board worked!!! :( RIP motherboard. Also all the symptoms I mentioned need not occur at once. If your RAM module or your motherboard is having a problem, the data transfer between your hard disk and processor will be unstable and hence your system will freeze.

Also you mentioned you reverted back to your original setup and you are still facing the problem so from a software side I recommend you destroy windows so you can recover using the recovery disk (I have no idea about your computer expertise, I have hardly taken part in any discussion on this forum so if you don't know what I am telling you then I recommend you to get some friend who can destroy windows boot or mbr so you can recover). Also try cleaning your motherboard with a soft cloth. Hope your problem get's solved.
Cheers
