Well there are four fans in my case, the standard GPU, CPU, PSU and case fan. None are near the HDDs. But I still wouldn't expect it to get that high. My laptop doesn't go much higher than the mid thirties and that feels really hot.

I ran it with the case open yesterday, and the HDDs were at 45C under load and just normally as well.

Yeah, 45 is a lot better, even if it is flat across the board. Perhaps it is still high if you have 'green' drives. You definitely want to get some air flowing past.

Modern PCs are getting tougher to keep cool, but the old principles still apply. Conventionally, you draw air in at the lower front and exhaust it at the back. If you've got a big tower CPU heatsink, it helps to align it with the airflow, eg. blowing toward the back.

Still, I've read that most HDDs should be in the 30s so I still find it rather strange. But no they're not 'green' hard drives. One quick (and probably rather stupid) question, but are the HDDs supposed to be connected to the same power cord? Because both are connected to one cord that has a number of points along it where you can plug them into. When I was installing it, it seemed like the most obvious thing to do, but I'm not too sure now.

The computer has no fan at the front, so there's no way to draw air in that way. I think just taking the side of the case off when I want to use it is the best method to keep it cool. Just hopefully I don't spill anything on it. The fans running while it's on should be enough to stop dust getting accumulating when the computer's on, and the case will be on it when the computer's off.

Is it worth to update my Windows 7 using Windows update or will it work the same even after the updates?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, could you repeat the question

It's always best to install the latest updates from Microsoft. There might be security flaws which are rectified, or performance issues, resolved.
In very rare cases does it happen that updates slow down your computer. Read the description to see what the update does, and whether you need it or not.

Which is the best free anti-virus available? I've been using Norton for a while now but the subscription is about to expire in a week.

I found AVG on download.com, have currently downloaded that, if I'm not satisfied with it then will shift to Avast.

Kaspersky, for me, was well worth the money. But MSE does the job fine. It's supported my Microsoft so you get reliable updates and support and it's free.
