Spot Fixing Scandal Thread: The Legend Continues

These bans - they are by the ICC, right? Not by Pakistan cricket board, right? Because if its by PCB, I wouldnt care because the players can overturn it easily and come out of it. ICC bans should be far more stricter and zero tolerance.

I agree with the last statement, but I will add the differences in the case, most notably that Cronje was involved with bookmakers for 4 years and told no one and made a fair bit of money from them, even if the fixing didn't occur in some instances. Not defending either party, but there are some differences.

I think the most important aspect is that I believe the ICC couldn't actually punish them any further, I think the code has changed since Cronje's time. I don't agree with that, but that's the situation we're in.

The CPS prosecution will be interesting and I think Pakistan will be best suited to not play the players when their bans are lifted. At least I know they won't be allowed visas in to the UK ever again once the court proceedings have been finished, and England won't be playing in Pakistan for a long time.

I will have to take your word for it but I if true I find it ridiculous that life bans have been take of the table.

Concerning the relationship between bookmakers. Can we really be sure this was the only time these guys were involved with bookmakers?? They weren't going to admit this was an ongoing thing if they had any hopes of returning, were they?

Under thing that bothers me about this tribunal is the fact that unlike the king tribunal of cronje this was done behind closed doors. I thought the cronje tribunal much more transparent.

Butt and Asif should have been given life bans but I believe Amir's punishment was a fair one. He's just 18 after all.

Butt, as the national captain, had a responsibility to uphold the values of the game in Pakistan. To be able to captain your country is a privilege and he's let both Pakistan cricket and the Pakistan people at a time when they needed it. For me he'd be the most disappointing.

This isn't the first time Asif has broken the ICC Code of Conduct, or indeed the law, for the first time. He's been banned by the PCB before failing a drugs test (a ban that was revoked) and has been banned from entering the UAE for possessing illegal drugs. This is another offense to add to that list and he stands as a terrible role model for any cricketer. I can't see any reason why he should be given another chance.

I don't believe either on differing punishments on match and spot fixing. Any time you make a deal with a bookmaker you have effectively sold your soul as a sportsman. You have willingly put the sport in doubt for your own personal gain.

The suspended sentences are purely for effect. Repeat offences would surely carry incredible penalties.

However, it's probably more realistic than a lifetime ban, because it seems a lifetime ban is just a lifetime of opportunities for people to change their minds. It is more difficult to appeal the minimum sanction for the charge. Although the time served might prove to be about the same, it's less of a farce.

Without any evidence for other involvements, it's irrelevant.

The entire verdict and accessories have been published online on the ICC's website for non-UK eyes only.

As it is, I have read every page of the 102 page document, and it is the most damning evidence I have ever seen. All three players can go to hell, there should be no doubt in anyone's mind after reading this that all three players knew exactly what they were doing, and were in essence looking forward to it.

----------

And another note, UK people read at your own risk, as it is illegal for you to do so. I will say that whilst it is interesting, it is not worth possible persecution in order to read it as there isn't much "new evidence", but rather when everything is put together in that document, there is readily very little doubt that those three are as guilty as it gets.

I hope the CPS get a full guilty verdict to the maximum jail time possible allowed for by the 2 charges.

Can you sum up some of the "damning evidence" for those of us who can't read the document (or don't have time to)

I saw the bit about no remorse was what led to the large bans and I'm glad. These guys never accepted responsibility and thought playing dumb would get them off. Unfortunately for them the PCB was not running the investigation.

I can PM it to you if you'd like; assuming the site server is in the UK it would not be legally advisable to post it in public eyes as according to Cricinfo even the dissemination of the ruling is illegal within the UK.

I'll let a lawyer or admin advise further on that.

IIRC the PC server is based in the USA.

Are there transcripts of phone conversations between the players and Majeed?

but yea PM me if you can, I won't have time to read the verdict till late next week, have mid terms coming up.

Ya, I just ran a visual route and its in USA. I'll write it up and post it with spoiler tags.

And yes, there are transcripts.

What I have so far is 11 pages - I've tried to leave the unnecessary information out, but you were keen on the transcripts so I tried to include all of them.

Also have a picture of a text message received by Mazhar Mahmood.

In the transcripts, MM is Mazhar Majeed and MK is Mazhar Mahmood, the NOTW reporter.

Was uploaded on this site as to absolve PC from any responsibility

*Removed pending discussion with admin.

I will write the defence of the players summary in a bit if you want that.

Damn it, the one week I'm in the UK (work-related) the ICC publish this. Really tempted to read it. The cricinfo article mentioned it will be on the ICC site for 7 days - is that from today? Hope so, as I go back on Sunday.

Really really want to read those transcripts - hope my patience lasts till Sunday.

Wow I just read it, thanks for that Insomniac. Just blows the mind, and it's more than obvious that Butt had a very active role in all this. His ban should have been for life.

If only Aamer had confessed from the start and ratted out Butt, he might have gotten away with a very small ban.
