Spot Fixing Scandal Thread: The Legend Continues

Heard Salman Butt has been hired as an expert for the World Cup by some Pakistani Channel.....Just ridiculous.

i can't believe kamran akmal is getting away as well. I mean, his name is black as mud, it's come up in every single piece of evidence.

kamran is a senior player and if he's a bad influence on the younger guy they'll never stamp it out.

channel that is broadcasting the matches shouldn't be allowed to hire him, the ICC should have that as part of their ban. if a channel is buying the rights they have a formal agreement with the ICC and he shouldn't be allowed to work with them as a consequence. can't stop a paper hiring him that's just going to report on the matches but should be able to stop a TV channel actually showing them.

According to Pakistani News Channels, Ijaz Butt has claimed that PCB have requested the ICC to review the judgement against Aamer. This is a new development and shows how desperate the PCB is to save Aamer's carrier.

I dont think PCB should get involved in this. Surely the wise decision would be to let Aamir appeal on his own.

It's a small news channel, they have no association with the ICC - its not a sports TV channel which is actually showing the game.

then nothing to be done i guess. can't see why they'd want him though.
Attract viewers, which they undoubtedly will - although it will be for the wrong reasons.

I'd certainly like to see how he has the guts to talk about cricket after this, and how the host or callers into the show don't tear him into pieces.

It should be interesting :lol

What has the reaction been in Pakistan? Now that the evidence is available have the majority accepted that these guys are guilty and this is not a conspiracy?

Well people were on both end of the spectrum; one opinion was that they were all 100% guilty and all of the players should be hung, while the other vouched for their innocence (especially Amir's).

It didn't help that the players (Amir and Butt, Asif stayed quiet) went on every TV show in Pakistan proclaiming their innocence. It is only natural to support ones countrymen over an incompetent sporting body, especially one that Pakistanis feel have been biased against for sometime (ever since Ehsan Mani left)

Now, we all know the truth. I don't think Pakistan had any issues with the tribunal picked, in fact I personally believe it was a very well qualified and well chosen tribunal. And in general, most trust the tribunal's decision, and the evidence given is a bit overwhelming.

The only potential issue I see is many Pakistanis do not have the English fluency to read the report, nor the knowledge of being able to find and download it (it's actually been taken down by the ICC already). Therefore, they don't know how conclusive the evidence is although the media did take excerpts from the report and most, if not all are convinced that they sold out Pakistan.

A small number of people will still believe that Amir was fooled or coaxed into doing it, and didn't know what he was doing, but I don't buy that - atleast not anymore. After reading all 102 pages, I can definitely say that Amir knew exactly what he was doing and what he was involved in - there was no "I didn't know what I was doing" argument involved.

All in all, yeah, we know they sold out our country. It's just too obvious and too damning.

I can see how some still think Aamer is innocent but its obvious he is not. In fact he was the least repentant of the 3 and the only one who claimed that there was no fix and Majeed just guessed the no balls.

I can see why people want to support him, he is a once in a decade sort of talent and they don't want to let him go. Hell even the PCB is trying to appeal his sentence which I don't think they should given his reluctance to admit to anything or take responsibility.

I think I'm satisfied with the actions taken so far, the cricketing careers are over for Butt and Asif for sure. If Aamer sits out for 5 years then I'd be ok with him returning too.

The only thing that bugs me is that Kamran Akmal, an obvious crook who got let off, and Wahab Riaz who was implicated numerous times in the report got off as well.

Saeed Ajmal should be a bloody hero for Pakistan, he's one of the only ones specifically mentioned as not being corruptible. I'm of the opinion that him alone and maybe one or two fringe players are the only truly innocent ones. I have little doubt in my mind that Afridi has taken part in this sort of activity (given his history of unethical behavior) and others like Kaneria, Akhtar all are equally shady.

If the PCB really wanted to change it's ways they would have conducted an internal investigation and banned the Akmals, Kaneria and anyone else they know of from insider sources to be match fixers. That wouldve send a great message to the ICC that the PCB is not only on their side, but pro-active in trying to stamp out corruption.

Shoaib Malik and Danish Kaneria were both not considered for selection for the World Cup due to their "suspicious activities"

Kamran Akmal however submitted details of his bank accounts, properties, and assets to the PCB, who then cleared him. The ICC cleared him and stated that Kamran Akmal was clear to seek selection for the team and was not under any investigation from the ACSU.

While this is difficult to believe, it's hard to stop him from playing for Pakistan if there's no proof, and he's done everything asked of him.

Wahab Riaz - same deal to an extent. There's no proof he did anything, no suspicious no-balls, no suspicious wides, just him taking a jacket. It doesn't mean much to be honest and I'm not sure if he's involved or not, its difficult to say.

Shahid Afridi was named by Mazhar Majeed as someone who would not match-fix, as was Abdul Razzaq, Saeed Ajmal, Younus Khan, and Umar Gul.

Also the PCB isn't intelligent enough to have "insider sources" - the biggest inside source right now is Zulqarnain Haider, if he actually has something. The PCB did however restrict Kaneria and Malik from being selected by the Selection Committee so they have done something, whether justified or not.

All in all, it seems like a clean group of players we have for the World Cup. But then again, nobody would have expected Salman Butt or Mohammad Amir to be involved in fixing, so perhaps we shouldn't say that. Asif of course has a past history of discipline, so I guess while it was a shock, he'd be the one out of the three to most likely do a fix.

Yea I never suspected Butt. He seemed like the most clean cut Pakistani cricketer and a good all round package. I thought he was going to be the Pakistani Graeme Smith after getting the captaincy, turned out to be a Hanse Cronje

Gotta love Razzaq, Ajmal, Afridi, Younis, Gul. They always seem to play with so much passion, so much dedication, nice to know they aren't corrupted.

Can't bring myself to support a Pak side with the Akmals and Riaz still in it tho.

I still support them because of Umar Gul hes my favourite player, and I am really glad that hes not caught up in any of this (or at least I hope not). I must admit though it still doesn't feel right with both those Akmals playing. It's pretty obvious that Sydney test was fixed yet so far (correct me if I am wrong) nothing has been done about it.

^Its because Cricket Australia did not want one of their team's greatest victory become tainted with such allegation. ICC therefore was forced to deem the test clear. However anyone with an iota of cricketing sense would know that Sydney was as fixed as they get.

It made me feel very uneasy watching that final day where half the team got out spooning catches to the outfielders. I always thought there was something strange about it. At the time in fact I remember thinking I can't believe the Aussies are claiming this when they just got wickets from them trying to smash hauritz.

I'm glad Kaneria is not back in the Pakistan team though, he has actually fixed hasn't he?? in county cricket..
