Sri Lanka in England 2011

Well that was amazing - we actually got praised by some of the Indian fans (oh and we won the game too).

Impressive performance with only three bowlers but I can certainly understand why Sri Lanka would find it hard to get excited about playing for a draw on a cold wet day in May in South Wales.
I reckon they'll raise their game for Lord's - they've shown that they can bat and I can't see them being rolled for under 100 again this series.

Just caught the highlights, LOL at Sri Lanka being caught completely off guard during a test match :facepalm. Pretty awesome stuff from the English bowlers.

I've hardly watched any of this game but sounds like I haven't missed much. Could be one of the worst tests of all time, maybe?? Even worse that its at Cardiff. I liked it when they started the summer off at Lords.

:p Nice post

Great win for England there, absolutely shredded their batting lineup.

On another note, I feel that the discussion on the IPL and it's affect on players should be split into a new thread - if you want to continue this discussion create a new thread.

oh and Jade Dernbach has been called into the XI. They'll probably go with Finn but there is talk about having a shorter bowler play to make the ball skid onto the batsmen

But that's Cardiff for you . The first test in the Ashes of 2009 was more or less on a similar stature before a cracking day 5 won the hearts of many cricket lovers . :p

Ohh and regarding the inclusion of Dernbach , is that an indication that Broad's spot is in danger? Both Finn & Broad are tall plus Finn plays his home matches here at the Lord's . Broad has been pretty average at test level boasting an average of 35 and didn't better that in Cardiff finishing with figures of 4/142 . The suspense is killing me...

No chance. You'd need a new skipper for Finn to come in for Broad. Strauss loves Stu.

Yeah the first ashes 09 test at Cardiff. My god, i was just glued to the TV hoping Eng fight to draw it and they did! Thanks to Collingwood, Swann, Broad, Anderson and Panesar. :p

As a Surrey fan and member, I can promise you that playing Jade Dernbach is a risk. He has had an impressive season so far but that is in Division Two. He's a cracking bowler and great under pressure, with a devilish slower ball but I'm not sure that he will pose much of a threat to Sangakkara, Dilshan and the like.

As for the result itself, I don't think England would have picked up that victory anywhere but in England! That said, Tremlett's lengths were much improved from the first innings and he bowled a sublime spell. Swann was reliable and dominant as ever and Broad pitched in at the end. Sri Lanka looked poorly disciplined in the last innings and the four IPL players from Sri Lanka have played a hell of a lot more Test Matches than IPL games so there really is no excuse.

I hope mahela will be dropped and they go for chandimal …. As a punishment for paying in IPL and not playing the practice game. If I was a selector I would drop sanga as well. NO ONES bigger then the team. and almost forgot I would ban malinga for life ... am not kiddin

chandimal hasn't made it to double figures in the tour games I think?

that would be madness lassana.

yeah, basically, couldn't even figure out what to say after that. Thought there was no chance of an england win after the 3rd day. Great opportunism from England but pretty atrocious from Sri Lanka.

Very puzzled how Dernbach has managed to leapfrog Shazad & Onions. England selectors rate Dernbach oddly high of late.

He is fantastic under pressure. He has a clear head and really performs at his peak when he is under pressure, as he would be with a Test debut. So he fits with the England team vision, as it were, of playing attacking, dominant cricket.

Plus, he took 5 wickets for the Lions..

Not sure if i'd bestow all those superlatives about him based on the many times i've seen him play for Surrey over the years (although he probably is in his best form of his life currently as his 5 for vs SRI for the Lions XI showed).

But given ENG have a long que of good quick bowling back-up. The likes of Onions & Shazad who have already played tests , should still be ahead of him IMO.

That win yesterday was one of the most astonishing things I've ever seen in cricket - on the highlights, that is. At the end of day four, I thought to myself that there was no way in hell that anything other than a draw would be the result in this match, so I took myself off out therefore missing it happen live. Big mistake, huh? :facepalm
