Sri Lankan Tour of Australia, October-November 2010/11

Starting to feel AUS should continue to rest key players for these ODIs & try out the young talent in this series. Much rather the boys be playing FC cricket before the Ashes.

Yeah I agree, random ODI tournaments is not the ideal way to start a summer IMHO.

Looking at the Shield fixtures:
Vic v Tas Oct 25-28 (T20I is Oct 31 so shouldn't be a problem)
SA v WA Oct 29 - Nov 1 (these guys should be able to make the 3 ODIs)
Qld v NSW Oct 31 - Nov 3
Then 3 games start on Nov 10. They shouldn't be a problem if the 3rd ODI is on Nov 7.

So yeah, just block the Qld and NSW potential Test players from the games. You still end up with a pretty strong team. My 14 man ODI squad in that case would be:
1 D.Warner
2 T.Paine (wk)
3 R.Ponting (c)
4 C.White (vc)
5 C.Ferguson
6 M.Hussey
7 J.Hopes
8 S.O'Keefe (he's in the frame for the Ashes I guess, but I doubt he'd get much of a bowl for NSW if Hauritz and Smith played)
9 M.Johnson
10 B.Lee
11 C.McKay
Backups:
S.Marsh
J.Hastings
M.Starc

For the T20Is you'd add guys like D.Hussey, Nannes and Christian, maybe Aaron Finch too. Probably for Hussey, Ferguson, Marsh and Johnson - who'd still be playing their Shield game.

i don't see the point of this series.

the conditions make it irrelevant to the world cup. i sadly expect sri lanka to lose most games here, they'll be under-prepared compared to the aussies. dunno why australia want to take on sri lanka in ODIs are preperation for the ashes.

It's a bit of a contractual-obligation series. Australia never seem to be able to fit Sri Lanka into their itinerary, so they're trying to get through the home engagements in two legs. However, in the same season we have 7 ODIs against England. Teams like Sri Lanka get squeezed out because we're trying to squeeze in more of the popular teams.

When again are AUS touring SRI for a test series?.

They could have brought back the tri series or at least only has 3 or 5 ODIs vs england and then add on three vs sri lanka because it would make more sense then when the world cup is just a short while away. Its pretty much a joke aussies warming up for the ashes with ODIs anyway. They really shouldn't be playing any in india right now either..

Yea wouldn't mind that, it not only helps our Ashes campaign but lets us try out other players just before the World Cup. Certainly wouldn't mind having a look at Finch while hes in this form. Definitely should get a go in T20 as his record is top notch.

when it comes to tests it really annoys to be honest. as War said, they haven't toured their in years, it's a bit sad how they get treated being one of the genuine top teams these days.

as for the match, surprised it was such a thumping win so that bodes well. Silva getting amongst the runs is good too, there's always been a feeling that Silva, with technique that's the carbon copy of Mahela's but more aggressive, should have been achieving a lot more. maybe he'll do a dilshan and blossom into a great player now he's in his 30s.

It would have been better had Australia toured Sri Lanka for 3 ODI's on the return from India. Makes logistical sense also. Having SRL play Aus in Aus months before the WC does not make any sense.
Plus, as someone has pointed out, there is no point of this series.

Interesting team by NSW to play SL. SA Abbott, MA Cameron, SJ Coyte, TD Cruickshank, PJ Hughes, UT Khawaja, B Lee, NJ Maddinson, PM Nevill†, SNJ O'Keefe*, BJ Rohrer, A Zampa

Bit strange why Haddin isn't playing and Cruickshank is an interesting choice given his age. Nice to see Zampa getting a run, seems to be highly regarded leggie.

Was wondering how long they would take to bring Siddle back into the mix. Bit weird playing Haddin in this over a Shield match. Paine would been more logical for the Ashes preparation plus he scores pretty quick in this format.

And they picked Siddle in probably his worst format - oh well. Will be good for the confidence I guess getting back in the Aussie colours, just I doubt he'll keep that confidence given how hittable his bowling can be. And 4 Victorians in the pace attack - ye gods :p But it's good how there are lots of bowling options. I hate the teams of past where Smith/Hopes batted at #8. If I'm honest, I think Smith's the guy I leave out of that lineup. Have Hastings and O'Keefe as your #7 and #8.

And I wouldn't have picked Watson, Haddin, Smith or Clarke either - particularly Haddin and Smith. Watson may see this as easier on his body than a Shield game, and I can see why Cricket Australia want Clarke there: a) so he gets to captain and b) so he can practice his T20 skills. And Smith...well I can't see how this helps him as a bowler at all.

Pretty much confirms he won't be in the first Ashes test. Definitely hard for Smith to get much out of this, if he makes the ODI 11 then he has a good chance at making the world cup side though.
