Sri Lanka's tour of Pakistan 2009

IF Younus goes on to break the record, he deserves it. It doesn't matter how flat the pitch is, it takes a real batsman to score 400 runs.

Hes another subcontinental batsman who benefits from playing on largely flat pitches. His average away from Asia is nothing more than average.
His average in Australia is quite good, and he has runs in England...

You sure about this?

In England, Younus averages 52.22 (tests)

In Australia, Younus averages 43.16, but played only 3 tests - he was the leading run scorer when Pakistan toured in 2004 (when he played those 3 tests)

zMario added 1 Minutes and 13 Seconds later...

Simply said, it doesn't matter what pitch it is because of 2 factors:

1. The skill and patience required to bat out the THREE days to score this 400.

2. Playing Murali and Mendis to get the 400. Big key factor, seeing as Murali can spin the ball on anything (and has been spinning it quite viciously (sp?))

Lara's 400* was followed by England being bowled out for 285, which would have been much worse if it wasn't for a gritty ton from Graham Thorpe. Lara's 400* wasn't following a massive score from England where average players were making double tons. If Younis Khan breaks Lara's record it'll still be a massive achievement, but I'll still see Lara's as a better innings. You've got to remember that Lara was batting against an almost identical attack that won the Ashes, with Flintoff, Jones, Harmison and Hoggard all in fantastic form.

An average of 40 overall outside the subcontinent proves he's nothing more than an average/good player. He's not worthy of breaking Brian Lara's record.

But an average of 52.22 in England and 43.16 when Younus was not even a confirmed spot in the side?

Younus has come miles from 2005 to present-time.

1 good series in England doesn't make him anything more than a good player. His hundred came against an injury hit England bowling attack as well. With Matthew Hoggard and Stephen Harmison in decline, Monty Panesar new to Test cricket and Saj Mahmood's general crapness. When batting against a decent attack in England, that being Gough, Caddick, Hoggard and Cork he struggled, averaging 35 in the series.

Sorry, he's a good player, but nothing more than that. Just another example of an average being majorly boosted by playing alot of cricket in the subcontinent.

This Sri Lankan attack is one that most countries have struggled with. Vaas, Murali, and Mendis aren't the lightest attack in the world.

I agree that Lara was no doubt a better player than Younus (atleast thus far), but if it were any other batsman playing for any other team, the achievement of making 400 runs defines a world class player.

It doesn't matter about the attack, if the pitch is ridiculously flat any attack would struggle. Thilan Samaraweera managed to score a double ton ffs. Lara's record came on a wicket that was far harder to bat on, as proven by the fact that England were bowled out for 285 in the next innings.

LOL at "thus far" as well, Younis Khan will NEVER match the career of Brian Lara, and will never be considered a better player than Lara.

Exactly. He won't. Because he is a Pakistani player and that is a fact no matter how much you guys deny it.

And about Kumble's 10 wicket record, it shouldn't be so highly rated as well since it was on a turning track:rolleyes:

Lara averaged only 52.88 in test match cricket.

We'll see :)

I believe if Younus gets 400, he will average more than Lara... :)

Also, prehaps Lara is a bit overrated?

This is test match cricket btw:

Lara in England : 48.76
Younus in England: 52.22

Lara in Australia: 41.97
Younus in Australia: 43.16

Lara in New Zealand: 36.90
Younus in New Zealand: 70.00

Lara in South Africa: 46.72
Younus in South Africa: 33.88

Just something to ponder over. Lara might be recognized for his "greatness" just because of that 400...

Oh, and King Pieteresen - the fact that England got bowled out for 285 has nothing to do with say... you guys collapsing / performing poorly?

Lara isn't recognized for his genius for the 400, its because he IS a genius. His shots are just phenomenal and you can't deny that he is the better player.

Lara over-rated? The true rant of a person who is both ignorant and rude to International Cricket.

Lara is a pure legend, he could put a shot out of any ball. He had strengths in his game that Younus can only dream about. His strength on the back-foot, remembering the size of the man, was awesome. Kevin Pietersen is a tall fella, and good on the hook/pull shots, but Lara, probably a almost a half a foot underneath him would put the same shot out of the bag which much more power and meaning.

In no way can Lara's name be disgraced. And those who do it are ignorant and are just pure and utter idiots who only support their county and cannot see further than it.
