Stanford Superstars Twenty20 squad announced

A 32-member Stanford Superstars Twenty20 squad has been announced for the US$20 million winner-takes-all match against England on November 1. The squad includes Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo, as well as notable performers from the Stanford Twenty20 domestic tournament.

"This is a squad of the best performers in the two editions of the Stanford 20/20 tournament we've had so far and the best players in the region," Viv Richards, the chairman of the seven-member selection committee, said. "It was a difficult task to select the top 32 but our selection panel believes that these players will provide us with the firepower and all the other resources to prevail over England in what is the richest prize in team sport history."

Richards said the squad would be whittled down based on how the players fare in training. "The difficult task of further reducing this training group to the playing squad lies ahead, so we will have to pay keen attention to how the players cope in the training camps which will be held in Antigua in the coming months."

Dave Mohammed, the left-arm spinner who won the Player-of-the-Tournament award last season, provides spin-bowling options along with his Trinidad team-mate Samuel Badree, the legspinner, while John Eugene, the only centurion in Stanford 20/20 history, is the oldest player in the mix at 37. The squad includes four wicketkeepers, with Denesh Ramdin the likely contender for selection ahead of Andre Fletcher, Lyndon James and Aldermond Lemond.

Eldine Baptiste, the former West Indies and Antigua allrounder, has been appointed the head coach, and he will be assisted by Roger Harper and Anguilla coach Cardigan Connor. The squad will be trimmed down once the dates for the preparatory camp are announced.

Stanford Superstars squad: Samuel Badree, Lionel Baker, Sulieman Benn, Dwayne Bravo, Jonathan Carter, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Lennox Cush, Travis Dowlin, Rayad Emrit, John Eugene, Andre Fletcher, Daren Ganga, Chris Gayle, Chad Hampson, Monctin Hodge, Danza Hyatt, Lyndon James, Sylvester Joseph, Aldermond Lesmond, Xavier Marshall, Dave Mohammed, Nelon Pascal, William Perkins, Kieron Pollard, Daren Powell, Kieran Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome Taylor, Kelbert Walters, Tonito Willett.

yup this is going to be exciting. cant wait for it to start, lots of money on the line.

Should be a good week, mainly because it's nice and short, but exciting as well.

I understand the Middlesex V T & T game is also for cash, imagine if you're a Middlesex player who gets named in the England squad, but doesn't play, therefore missing out on both chances to win the money. :p

Two words, Andrew Strauss.

It'll be interesting to see who England pick for this, will they pick the same old bunch of players who suck at T20 or will they be a bit adventurous and pick players from outside the normal clique who are actually good at T20?

WICB, Digicel head to arbitration

Kern De Freitas

July 24, 2008

With talks failing to resolve to their dispute over the sponsorship rights for the November 1 Stanford 20/20 All-Star match, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and chief sponsors Digicel will head to arbitration.

Three weeks of negotiations between the WICB and Digicel have not brought about a mutually favourable solution. Now, legal teams from both parties are working towards a neutral intervention, WICB CEO Donald Peters confirmed yesterday.

"Digicel have asked to go to arbitration, so we are prepared to do that," Peters told the Express. "Our attorneys are working on that, but (we're) not sure what time it is yet. There are guidelines to the arbitration process, so we will stick with that."

The issue Digicel raised with the Stanford five-year, US$100 million series - which consists of one All-Star match per year against an England Select team - is that the deal with the WICB and Stanford encroaches on the Irish telecommunication giants' exclusive sponsorship rights. Allen Stanford, however, disagrees.

"Digicel has to deal with the WICB, the WICB has the West Indies team," Stanford said on Monday during the ring presentation ceremony to the Trinidad and Tobago team, the 2008 Stanford 20/20 regional winners. "We have the Stanford Superstar team which was selected by the Legends here, not by the WICB selectors, totally different, totally apart."

A 32-man training squad, including eight T&T players, has been selected for the lucrative, winner-take-all match. Stanford has exclusive television and other rights to the game according to their deal with the WICB, but Digicel has threatened legal proceedings if the issue is not settled soon.

A Stanford reality check for West Indies

As Julian Hunte and Donald Peters were at their kiss-and-make-up lunch in Antigua last week, settling an issue that had absolutely nothing to do with the depressed state of West Indies cricket, 30 players were going through the rigours of training and coaching nearby.

They were all West Indian but, even though the next official West Indies assignments are the Associates tri-series in Toronto in August and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in September, they weren't there as a West Indies team.

While president Hunte occupied himself with chief executive Peters' handling of a report claiming the WICB paid for the work on his office in St Lucia, no side had yet been announced for either Toronto or Pakistan - and still hasn't.

What is more, confusion remained over Chris Gayle's resignation as captain. There were no such distractions for the players in Antigua, members of the initial Stanford Superstars squad for the breathtaking US$20 million one-off winner-take-all challenge match against England, devised and financed by Texan billionaire Allen Stanford at his ground adjoining the VC Bird International Airport, almost three months distant on November 1.

They were there for a fortnight's training camp, ending on Wednesday, that the Stanford organisation said was "designed to upgrade the fitness levels of the players and fine-tune their all-round cricket skills". There would also be "emphasis on other critical aspects of the game such as team work, strategy formulation and video analysis review".

The Superstars are under the direction of head coach Eldine Baptiste and his deputy Roger Harper, the former West Indies allrounder with compelling coaching credentials. Sir Viv Richards, the chief selector, and Lance Gibbs, the manager, are the West Indies icons who are part of the event. Cardigan Connor, the Anguillan who played for several seasons with Hampshire, will be Gibbs' assistant.

They were augmented by "specialist advice from several of the legends of West Indies cricket on the Stanford 20/20 board of directors and other experts including the internationally-renowned fielding coach Julian Fountain".

As his investment of unprecedented millions into the game confirms, Stanford doesn't deal in half-measures. He has no intention of depositing his US$20 million into English bank accounts and has called in West Indian heavyweights to ensure that he doesn't have to. If those picked do not benefit from the exercise, they had no right being there.

Yet it gives rise to an obvious dichotomy. Within the next week or so, several of the Superstars must come back to earth and link up again with the established WICB management for the upcoming tournaments.

Coach John Dyson, assistant David Williams and manager Omar Khan are all relatively new to their jobs. They are still feeling their way, trying to overcome the inconsistent performances of the team and the consistent bungling of the board.

Now their main charges return from a fresh experience under different coaches, presumably with different methods. It is a situation to be repeated over the next five years that these multi-million dollar, one-off extravaganzas are scheduled.

For the past two weeks in Antigua, the adrenaline of Stanford's Superstars would have been driven by the hype surrounding the November 1 event. They would have been flattered by the close and constant attention of the West Indies greats and five-star amenities. Not least, they would have had ample time to contemplate the unprecedented wealth on offer.

They now have to return to reality, to a low-key series against Canada and Bermuda in Toronto, followed by the Champions Trophy in Pakistan that most players would rather avoid. November 1 can't come around fast enough.

It all adds up to a formidable challenge for Dyson and his associates to assert their influence once more.

The 17 players who will form the Stanford Superstars Twenty20 squad and compete for US$20 million in the winner-takes-all match against England on November 1 have been named. The squad includes Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo, as well as notable performers from the Stanford Twenty20 domestic tournament.

"We [the Stanford Superstars selection panel] believe this squad is very capable of doing justice to their selection to the Stanford Superstars squad to face England for the unprecedented purse of US$20million," Viv Richards, the chairman of the selection panel, said.

"There are several familiar faces in this Stanford Superstars squad, but there are some exciting new additions such as Lindon James, Lionel Baker and Chad Hampson. This was due to the fact that there were some high quality performances from these individuals in the Stanford 20/20 Tournaments and they were also very impressive in the just concluded Stanford Superstars camp."

Thirty one out of 32 probables participated in a two-week camp in Antigua. Chanderpaul was excused because of his county commitments with Durham but was eligible for selection. The 17 players were presented with contracts and have 14 days to confirm their participation in the tournament.

The selection panel comprising Richards, Everton Weekes, Curtly Ambrose, Lance Gibbs, Richie Richardson, Andy Roberts and Courtney Walsh will meet at a later date to select the captain and vice captain.

I like that squad, as much as it is for the money I hope that some of the youngsters take this opportunity to show that they are worthy of selection for the national team.

Bravo should be the captain and maybe Marshall the vc.

Cant wait to see Dave Mohammed against some good opposition. He was really good in the Stanford 20/20.
