An excellent month on and off the field - well I say off the field but that is only because we signed Hugo Almeida, but injuries and our Champs league draw haven't been great.
Our friendly win over Arsenal was pleasing, and the beijing draw didn't really matter. The big week of the month was when we came up against Valencia for the Spanish Super Cup. Away from home I fancied grabbing a draw with an away goal setting us up perfectly for a home win, but boy was the game a cracker!
On just 10 minutes van Nistelrooy opened the scoring from a corner, but Mathieu struck back for Valencia with a stunning strike. An even half saw both sides create chances, but out of nowhere Joaquin stepped up to smash a 30 yard free kick into the back of the net right on half time.
We came out the second half and equalised early, Benzema getting his first competitive goal for the club. Robben then scored a cracking volley to put us ahead. We held on despite massive pressure to claim a huge 3-2 away win.
We felt comfortable going into the home tie and Raul made things even better with an early goal to leave Valencia needing 3 goals to go through. It was plain sailing until Marchena scored on 69 minutes, and Fernandes gave them the lead moments later. Our defence held out for the remaining nerve-racking 17 minutes to give us the aggregate win on away goals.
A brilliant start to the season, but now we face Holden's Barca in our first La Liga game of the season.
