Draft: The 2010s - To celebrate the best players during the decade

My pick is A B De Villiers.

Of players to score at least 5,000 runs in the 2010s, only Smith has a better average than AB's 57.48. He also gives a lot of versatility in terms of role and where he bats etc. so I'll decide on that later.

@AsadRM you now have a double pick.

Dale Steyn would be my first pick. Arguably, he is the greatest test fast bowler in South African history. He took 267 test scalps at a highly impressive average of 22.29

The Next pick would be be the best English fast bowler during the decade. Yes, I am talking about Jimmy Anderson. He has around 400 test wickets in the decade. He has taken 20 five fors during the decade

AAAGH! I figured you'd pick a batter, then either Steyn or Anderson, and I would pick whichever you didn't.

Instead I'll take Ryan Harris. Plagued by injuries but what a bloody player. All of his 27 Test matches came between 2010-2015, when he took 113 wickets at 23.52.

Back to you @Aislabie

Overall Pick #8: Ravindra Jadeja

Profile
So to most this will seem like a truly bizarre selection. Popular opinion is split on whether he is even the best Test spinner in his own team, but the numbers don't lie: no spinner in the decade took even 50 wickets at an average of less than 25. The man himself took 211 at 24.64. Only three men took over 50 wickets and averaged over 35 with the bat: Shakib, Stokes and Jadeja and again - Sir Jadeja's bowling average is a full seven runs per wicket better than the next-best of them. In this decade, he is a uniquely effective bowling all-rounder, and I feel fully justified in selecting him so early in the draft.

2010s Statistics (48 matches)
:bat: Left-handed batsman
1,844 runs @ 35.46 (1 century, best 100*)
:bwl: Left-arm orthodox
211 wickets @ 24.64 (9 5WI, best 7/48)

Role in the Team

He's a more than capable number seven batsman, and will be one of two spinners in my five-man attack.

"He's big, he's bad, he's better than his dad..."

Number 4 on the list of test match wicket takers for a seamer. Relentless work ethic, lead England attack in tandem with Anderson since 2010. Slowing down a bit now, still incredible on his day.

4. :aus: Steve Smith :bat::c:
10.:eng: Stuart Broad :bwl:[DOUBLEPOST=1578180963][/DOUBLEPOST]@Bigby Wolf

Nathan Lyon
post_image_381a92b.jpg

  • Well to start with Gary has picked most Test Wickets by a Spinner in last decade and third highest after Broad and Anderson.
  • His Performances away from Australia was equally impressive as he picked 199 away wickets with 10 fifers at average of 31.
  • For a finger Spinner with classical offspin Lyon has done exceedingly well and played a pivotal role in forming a lethal Australian bowling attack in the last 10 years.
  • 'Nice Garry' - Makes it in my playing XI.

Only BJ Watling and Johnny Bairstow scored more than 3000 runs as a Keeper in the 2010s. BJ scored his runs at a higher average (41.87 vs 37.85), with a better top score (205 vs 167*), and more centuries/half-centuries (7/17 v 5/15).

He's also a better keeper, and so BJ Watling is my choice.

Over to you, @Bigby Wolf

Hashim Amla
Hashim_Amla_retires.jpg

  • The Mighty Hashim Amla had Spectacular start to the Decade scoring 1249 at an average of 78 in the Year 2010 scoring heavily against India at the start of the year with centuries in 4 innings.
  • In 2012 Amla became the first South African Batsmen to score a triple hundred against England and scored another ton in series which helped South Africa win the series and clinch the no.1 title from England.
  • Amla scored heavily in the next couple of years before a slump in form due to captaincy and bit of transition phase in South Africa.
  • Overall his performance early in the decade makes him one of the best Openers in 2010s.

Overall Pick #14: Pat Cummins

Profile
A teenage Pat Cummins burst onto the scene in 2011 by obliterating South Africa, the best team in the world at the time. Unfortunately, express-pace teenagers whose bodies are still growing are susceptible to injury, and Cummins picked up all the injuries. It would be six years before he played his next Test, but since then he's been indispensable and no bowler has taken more than 100 wickets in the decade at a better average. He's already rapidly entering the conversation about best-ever fast bowlers, and I can't quite believe he's still available for my team.

2010s Statistics (29 matches)
:bat: Right-handed batsman
639 runs @ 17.27 (best 63)
:bwl: Right-arm fast bowler
139 wickets @ 21.92 (5 5WI, best 6/23)

Role in the Team

He's going to take three or four wickets and concede less than two runs per over, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it happening.

I will pick the great Aussie test opener who recently took full advantage of some inexperienced teenage pacers, DAVID WARNER. He smashed an amazing triple century (335*) and some of the Aussie fans are still angry that he missed his extremely likely 400. He has played 82 tests and amassed 7,009 runs at a highly impressive average of 48.33. He also has 23 hundreds and 30 fifties to his name.

@DalePlaysSports I know you got Broad :)

BEN STOKES is the next man whom I have got an honour of having. He is arguably the greatest fast-bowling all rounder to have played these any games in the 2010 decade. But he is a man whom I really admire. From being the villain in West Indies triumph at the World T20 in 2016 or the famous brawl, to being the hero of England by making them win a WC and draw an ashes, he has seen it all. He has played 58 tests and scored 3,738 runs with 8 hundreds and 20 fifties with a high score of 258. He also has 137 wickets at an average of 33.45. For the stat nerds here are all the stats.

M: 59 | Runs: 3,738 | 100s: 8 | 50s: 20 | Ave: 35.94 | HS: 258 | Wkts: 137 | 5wi: 4 | 10wm: 0 | Ave: 33.45 | SR: 59.9 | BBI: 6-22 | BBM: 8-161

Overall Pick #17: Vernon Philander

It's bowlers who win you Test matches, and Vernon Philander has won more than most. Since he began his Test career by reducing Australia to 21 for nine, his standards have barely dipped. Despite a frame and style that are both wildly unfashionable in the modern game, there's simply not a seamer to compare with Big Vern in this decade. Averaging a touch under 22, he offers peerless control and a forensic examination of the technique of opposition batsmen. He's also a capable lower-order batsman, even opening the batting on one occasion though without success.

2010s Statistics (61 matches)
:bat: Right-handed batsman
1700 runs @ 24.63 (best 74)
:bwl: Right-arm medium-fast bowler
220 wickets @ 21.99 (13 5WI, best 6/21)

Role in the Team

Big Vern takes the new ball. With an apparent minimum of effort, his accuracy and skill can make even the best players look clueless.

Morne Morkel

The Tall Lanky fast bowler with some serious makes in my list as one of the best bowlers in the last decade.
  • Morkel alongside Steyn and Philander formed the best bowling lineup in the world in the early 2010s where South Africa Rose to prominence as a no.1 Test Nation.
  • Highest Wicketaker in the Calendar Year picked up 49 wickets at average of 24.
  • Even in twilight of his career Morne managed to be as impressive as ever picking 39 and 28 wickets in 2017 and 2018 at average of 23 and 19 respectively.
