Alastair Cook plays to leg during his match winning knock of 159 in the 1st innings.

England have managed to claw back to 2-1 after an emphatic victory against Australia
at Edgbaston. Both teams went into the match unchanged with Austrlalia holding
all of the mommentum, but it was England who came out of the match with it.

On a bright sunny August day, Ricky Ponting lost the toss and Andrew Strauss decided
to bat, Many experts and pundits were amazed with this decision as it looked
like the pitch was going to help the bowlers from the off. The only explanation people
could come up with was the fact there was no cloud cover and the sun was shining.
Usually when this happens at Edgbaston there is little to no swing

It was Strauss who proved everyone wrong though when his batting side fired on all
cylinders for the first time in the series. Strauss and Cook opened up the innings with
a cenutry partnership but it was Alastair Cook who was to take the spoils for the innings.

Cook batted for 230 balls, a mammoth innings containing 27 fours and 2 sixes, before his
innings of 159 many had regarded him as the next play to be dropped with peope starting
to spot his technical flaws, but this inspired knock seems to have done his confidence a
world of good. Pietersen also providec a valuable knock of 89 falling agonizingly close
to another century against the Australians.

The Australian bowlers toiled away agsint the batsmen for the best part of 5 sessions,
the pick of the bowlers was all-rounder Shane Watson with 4-63. Many consider him a
liability and people believe he will break down again soon with another injury but many will
have their fingers crossed. Michael Clarke was the second best bowler of the
innings taking 3 English wickets for 51. Clarke's part time spin seems to be playing a vital
role in the Australians spin department during this series. How much of an effect will
he have in the final 2 tests?

With Australia playing the much better cricket going into the match, you expected them
to play with a hard fought innings and get close to the England score. Instead, with
Australias backs against the wall, they floundered, producing a measly score of 205
leaving themselves 300 runs behind England.

The only stand out batsmen of the innings was Brad Haddin who again seemed to perform
then as he has done through out the series, a vital 42 pushing his side just tiny bit further
towards the England total. Although only 3 batsmen made scores in single figures it
was a dismal effort by the Australian line up.

In contrast England's bowlers looked inspired, with each bowler doing his fair share of the
bowling and picking up wickets. Broad and Harmison took 3 wickets a peice tearing out
the Australian top and lower order. Whilst James Anderson took 2, Andrew Flintoff and
Graeme Swann picking up the solitary wicket a pice.

This time, there were no surprises from Andrew Strauss who immediately opted to
enforce the follow on after his bowlers had been out there for just the 66 overs. Things
started just as badly for Australia in the second innings as they did in the first, 3 quick
wickets left Australia at 58/3. But they were saved by some rearguard batting by Hussey,
Clarke and Watson. Watson chipping in with 37, Clarke hitting a fruitful half century and
Hussey scoring the second century of the game. Because of these rearguard knocks
Australia managed to pull themselves past England's 1st Innings total to make them bat again.
Unfortunaetly the lead wasn't quie big enough as England only needed 30 to win.

The English bowling attack was led by Andrew Flintoff who was ruthless in his bowling with
figures of 5 for 46 from 16 overs. Borad provided support once again with another 3 wickets to
his name. England will feel extremely happy with their bowling performance but will feel slightly
aggrieved that they let Australia go from 58/3 to 250/5.

It took England just 8 overs to reach the required 30 with well over a day to spare. That will be
turned into a rest after their tremendous efforts that has seen them pull back the score to 2-1.
There was only 1 casualty for England when Andrew Strauss was adjudged LBW for 9.

England go into the 4th test, 2-1 down hoping to draw the scores level, so there will be
an exciting 5th and final test.
