The Australian Openers Gig

Who should open with Hayden in the Tests?

It's pretty obvious that Hooper has a WA bias and Ben has a NSW one. You've both seen more of your local opener and you both prefer your local one.

Personally I agree that recent form should be the primary factor, and that Rogers should get the gig, plus as I said, he is a better fit as a replacement for Langer, Jaques and Hayden are too similar.

If we start picking players on past form or reputation we start getting Martyn back in the side for Hodge, even though Martyn has done nothing to merit the selection, or Cullen in the contracted players despite not getting a game for SA late in the year. That's last placed South Australia FTR.

I don't think I have a NSW bias considering I've lived in Victoria my entire life & my favourite cricketer is from Queensland.

Chris Rogers would've originally got the nod from me if he had've continued & built on his form from last year but instead has struggled in county cricket (which TBH, is a step below our domestic competition) and didn't exactly set the world a light in the Pakistan A tour either.

I think (hope not) Jaques might be past his very best already anyway but his batting better then Rogers is at the present and that's all that matters.

He was solid in the Pakistan A tour, he scored 2 50's in 3 innings, nothing wrong with that.

Martyn retired... ;)

This one might be a bit from left field but...

What ever happenend to Katich? He is 32 years old so he isn't that much older than Rogers. Katich is a real wristy player so he would work singles really easily particuarly in the One Day game, that is if Gilchrist shifted down the order, which I don't think people would want. Katich's domestic average is 51.98 so he has proven that he has done it before.

It's solid but he was up against Jaques who made big 100s so that gives him the the tick in the box going by the recent tour. You have to perform at the right time to get into the Aussie side.

Katich lost confidence after he was dropped during the SL tour. After that he was always looking over his shoulder waiting for the tap.

Dont talk about Katich :p he is the another player who loves wasting balls :D

I remember last summer (Or was it the summer before) the selectors wouldn't want to pick Jaques because of his "bad fielding" and then like the next day he takes a ripper of a catch from close in.

Classic :D
There was method to it. Jaques had a shoulder injury a while ago and his throwing was severely limited for quite a while after. There was a similar barrier for Tait, who injured his shoulder in the field and even though he was back bowling, his arm wasn't 100%.

Yeah true, I have seen more of Rogers and he has done nothing but impressed me so thats why I desperately want him in our side.

He is a gonner, wasn't handed a CA contract this season, sulked and should stay down with his NSW and churn out hundreds to make them take notice.

Katich's boat has sailed I'm afraid. Michael Clarke coming back so strong in the last Ashes series was the nail in his coffin.

It was just a thought. I don't think Katich ever opened in Tests. I think he bats a three for NSW in First Class. I am pretty sure he opens in One Dayers though.

Katich never opened in Tests, he opens in OD games - well I did see him do it for a little while.

I know, it was an example of something that happened in the past when we ignored form and picked on past results/experience.

Well he was Australia's worst ever One Day opener, but as far as opening in test goes, I'm sure that he would be alright at it. He's got the temperament to be an opener, he knows what to do and is a left hander as well.

Contrary to what others have said, I don't believe his ship has sailed just yet. He still has some potential and I rate him as a chance to make a comeback, but no very likely I suppose.
