Story The Dream

Oh dear. Awful batting. If it wasn't for Adnan and Taylor, you'd have to follow on. It's obviously a very poor pitch now. Just keep the pressure on them to get them out for a low score. Then you'll have to hold your nerve.

Derbyshire v Surrey - Three Day

After some epic bowling in the last session, we had a decent second day. We kept ourselves in the game and it seems that the game is in the balance. At this rate we will have to get around 325 runs in our last innings which is going to be tricky. As long as we get the last few wickets in quick succession and for not many runs, we have a chance.

It took the same amount as balls today as it took to get the last wicket of Surrey at the start of yesterdays play. 4 balls into the first session and Kevin Dean got a wicket. Anil Kumble totally misinterpreting Dean's delivery and got out for lbw. A decent knock of 12 off 19 is a good score for a bowler but in these circumstances, he will no doubt be unhappy.

A Kumble - lbw Dean - 12(19)

Martin Bicknell was the man next in as he defended the last few bowls from Kevin Dean. A good first over left them at 115/8 and with a 247 run lead. We're definitely in here if we can get Butcher out soon. Bicknell got out to Botha last time so in came the spinner but the combination of Dean/Botha didn't seem to be working. Bicknell eventually went to Botha after a thirteen run partnership. Adnan got the catch as Surrey were on 127/9.

M Bicknell - c Adnan b Botha - 7(18)

Ormond was the new man in. He didn't get out last time so I didn't know who to bowl against him but I know he has a strong bowling preference. Dean was replaced with Lungley with Botha still at the other end as we went on search for the last wicket. The wicket finally came after a 16 run partnership to end their innings. Butcher was the man to leave for a score of 32 as Lungley picked up his 3rd wicket. A lead of 275 for Surrey, but will it be enough?

M Butcher - c Pipe b Lungley - 32(110)

Change of Innings - Surrey 143ao(lead by 275 runs)
Butcher 32
Clarke 29
Lungley 3-26
Dean 3-31

It was our second innings and the target had been set. 276 runs was our required total to get, with 275 getting us a draw. There wasn't really a question on whether we could last out the match as there was just too much time left. I have confidence in our batsman though. The run chase started very well as our batsmen took us to Lunch on day three. There wasn't much time left in the first session but it was good to see us end it without losing a wicket. Both Australians have looked in good touch and can hopefully keep this up.

Day Three Lunch Interval - Derbyshire 34/0(need 242 more runs to win)
Di Venuto 17*
Birt 14*

Back out after lunch and Surrey chose to have a bowling attack of Kumble and Mahmood. This partnership destroyed us last time! We seemed to be taming them a bit this time though as the 50 run partnership came up. As we came to around the 77 mark, it came apparent to us that we needed less than 200 runs. Unfortunately, very shortly after saw the first wicket of the session, and our innings. Travis Birt getting out to Surrey's star bowler Anil Kumble. 79/1 and a good start from the openers.

T Birt - lbw Kumble - 40(95)

Adnan was the man now in, who thankfully prefers playing spin more than pace so should hopefully play Kumble well. Adnan also got the second highest score in our first innings so hopefully he can do the same kind of thing. After a mere 8 run partnership, Di Venuto had to walk back to the pavilion. Both of our openers were now gone. Bicknell came into the attack and gets his wicket in his second over. Not good, 87/2.

Di Venuto - b Bicknell - 40(103)

Taylor was now in and the two highest scorers in the first innings were now in. I had a strange feeling that they would disappoint me though. Taylor started well against the seamer's but soon after Kumble came in. First over and Taylor nearly got bowled by Kumble, but the ball missed the wickets by a whisker. Adnan and Taylor brought up the century but straight away after, we lost our third wicket. Adnan the man going as our chase looked more and more like a fantasy. 102/3 the score, requiring 174 runs with 7 wickets in hand.

H Adnan - c Benning b Ormond - 8(16)

Stubbings came in and got out straight away after. Kumble was the man to get Stubbings as he continued to disappoint. He couldn't even better his first innings score of 6! 103/4 now and us winning was looking more unlikely than ever. Not good at all.

S Stubbings - c Brown b Kumble - 1(7)

With our short batting line up, it was looking like it was certain defeat for us. What looked like a promising partnership between Taylor and Welch soon got shattered as Ormond picked up his second wicket. Taylor the man to get out as our batsmen continue to fail. 159 runs to win now, with 5 wickets in hand. Virtually impossible.

C Taylor - lbw Ormond - 14(37)

Somehow, neither Welch nor Pipe got out in the last few overs before tea as both looked a little comfortable despite edging it once or twice. This partnership looks quite promising, but despite how promising it may be, I doubt it will be enough for us to clinch victory. Maybe, but highly unlikely.

Day Three Tea Interval - Derbyshire 145/5(need 131 more runs to win)
Welch 19*
Pipe 16*
Kumble 2-33
Ormond 2-33

With Mahmood and Kumble back into the attack after tea, we knew it wouldn't be long before there was a wicket. A 36 run partnership, which is our second best in the innings so far, came to an end when Welch got bowled by Mahmood for 25 runs. 123 was now the required amount to get but with 4 wickets in hand, it was not looking good.

G Welch - b Mahmood - 25(47)

Andre Botha was in and it was time for our bowlers to bat. A strange start to Botha's innings came as he hit four runs of both of his first two balls. Not a bad way to start! I don't think he will last though as he's trying to be too attacking. With all hope lost, a brilliant partnership of 38 gave us a glimmer of hope. 85 runs with 3 wickets in hand. Improbable. Pipe was the man to go after getting a decent score of 32. 191/7.

D Pipe - b Kumble - 32(68)

A boundary from Steffan Jones brought up our 200 as we by passed our first run scoring milestone to get our first batting point of the season! Jones and Botha started playing some cracking shots as the required amount to win now was below 50! Could the bowlers win the match for us? Surely not? The runs kept coming though as the partnership went past 50 runs and soon took us over the 250 mark. They survived till the end of the session, which turned out to be the end of the day. They batted for the last 1 hour and 15 minutes! Some brilliant batting.

End of Day Three - Derbyshire 255/7(need 21 more runs to win)
Botha 39*
Jones 34*
Kumble 3-57
Ormond 2-52

Some how we were still in it. We bowled well at the start of the day to restrict them to a low total. We started strongly and were at one stage 79/0. For some reason it all went wrong and we were soon 117/5. We had lost most of our hope and looked to be batting with not much confidence at all. Then two great partnerships of 36 and 38 brought us back into the game, but still kept Surrey as favourites. This left us at 191/7 and then from there we just batted surprisingly well. A 64* run partnership was not expected by anyone, especially by two bowlers. Unexpected but definitely welcomed. We're still in it, and must be favourites now!

Derbyshire v Surrey - Fourth Day

Our tail enders have kept us in the game. After bowling out Surrey quite quickly in the first session, we started our innings well. We reached 79 runs before the first wicket went. We soon had a mini batting collapse as we found ourselves 121/5. Welch and Pipe both gave good knocks, in what seemed to be vain until Botha and Jones decided to be batsmen for the day. Could we hang on for a surprising win?

Only a few overs into the match and Jones could of been out twice. The first time was to Anil Kumble, as an lbw appeal is thought nothing of. The second chance was Jones getting dropped in the slips! Newman dropping him off Mahmood's bowling. With 9 runs to get, Surrey took the new ball. That means Kumble wouldn't be bowling again in the match. Good side of the new ball. With only 4 runs to win, we lost a wicket. Andre Botha going for 43 runs of 118 balls, but he played his part! Ormond with the new ball getting him out as Rikki Clarke caught him easily. 272/8 the score, with us required to get 4 runs to win.

A Botha - c Clarke b Ormond - 43(118)

Lungley is the man in. The main bowler in the first innings, and then in the second innings. He has been an indispensable member of the team in this match. Let's hoping he doesn't get another duck. There's the winning runs! Jones hits the winning runs for the team as two bowlers take us to victory. A two wicket win makes it seem like it was not very comfortable, which was true. We got lucky, but I'm not going to grumble. Scott Newman gets man of the match for his 156 run effort in the first innings.

Surrey - 317
Newman 156
Walters 40
Lungley 5-61
Dean 2-82

Derbyshire - 185
Taylor 63
Adnan 41
Kumble 4-47
Mahmood 4-60

Surrey - 143
Butcher 32
Clarke 29
Lungley 3-26
Dean 3-31

Derbyshire - 276/8
Jones 46*
Botha 43
Ormond 3-53
Kumble 3-63

17 points for us, 6 points for Surrey. Perhaps a draw would of been a fair result but Surrey shouldn't really have been contemplating anything less than a win. It just shows that with a quality coach, any team can do well. As long as we can continue this form this season, I will be happy. Until then, we just have to savour the win against a high caliber team. It's just an added bonus that I turned down the Surrey job to come to Derbyshire. Funny how things work out isn't it?

3rd place. We've only played one game but it is a perfect score. For some reason our batting points have been messed up and we haven't been awarded them. We're still in 3rd place though and at this stage of the season it doesn't really matter. We have to look ahead to the next match which is our first One Day game against Yorkshire. Come on boys!

Well good win for derbyshire and you as coach. You are third in table thats good. Run chase looked tricky as you had to lose 8 wickets but its always difficult to chase in the fourth innings.

Well written Jaz. KUTGW :clap

Nice one from Jones. He held it together to give Derbyshire the win. Could've just as easily gonme the other way to be honest.

Well done coming back and winning that,Jaz.
I hope you can continue this kind of form.
The one thing I don't like is that Lancs lost their match!:crying

Nice playing there.the presentation was good, nice going mate. Keep it up.

23 April 2006 - Yorkshire v Derbyshire(Challenge Trophy North)

We've won our first game, albeit a County Championship match, but it was against Surrey and it had got our spirits way up. We were now being recognized as a decent team, more than a poor team. It was our first Challenge Trophy game though today, against another good team. Yorkshire. They made it to the semi-final last season but the format has changed so lets see if we can do better than we did last year. The pitch is a good one with a few clouds until a little sun and cloud later on. A little bit of swing in the air me think.

After our first game I had a rough idea on who to choose for the Challenge Trophy match. Well at least I didn't have the decision of going with 4 or 5 bowlers in this match, as I'm definitely going to go with 5. I thought about changing the bowling attack for the match but they all did so well in the bowling department, bar Jones. He saved us in the last innings with Botha though so I feel I have to repay him for that. As with most games this season, if not all, Pipe is the wicketkeeper.

After batting averagely in the last match, my batting line up was expecting a massive change. The only change for this match though would be the order. Stubbings gets promoted up to number 2 to open with Di Venuto, with Adnan staying at 3. Birt goes to 4, moving Taylor down to 5 with Welch and Pip making up 6 and 7. Hopefully my top 7 can bat well today and we don't have to rely on the batting talent of our bowlers to win the match for us.

Michael Vaughan won the toss for them and decided to bowl first on this pitch. If Graeme Welch had won the toss then I most definitely would of bowled first, but it wasn't mean to be. Di Venuto and Stubbings walked out to the crease, for the first time together, to open our innings. Hoggard and Kruis would be the bowlers to open the bowling as we could be in for a rough time.

Hoggard nearly got a wicket with the 4th ball of the match and had an appeal for a catch behind off Stubbings, but the umpire said no. A few overs later and Stubbings had a lbw appeal against him. He wasn't starting this match well at all. After hitting a few boundaries, Hoggard gets his first wicket. Our big man Di Venuto goes for a mere 17 runs of 29 runs. It's not the start I particularly wanted and at this rate, I can't see us winning.

M Di Venuto - c White b Hoggard - 17(29)

Adnan then came in but his partnership with Stubbings only last 10 runs. In Hoggard's next over he got his second wicket, Stubbings. Clean bowled for 7 runs, means that he continues his terrible start to the season for us. He'll be out of the team at this rate. Disappointing from Stubbings once again but all is not yet lost. 32/2.

S Stubbings - b Hoggard - 7(22)

Birt comes in and looks quite comfortable until he edges one of Hoggard's deliveries, but luckily there was no one there. With Hoggard and Kruis out, Warren and Bresnan were the bowlers in. Bresnan only lasted a few overs before going out for White to come in. What seemed to be a decent partnership soon came to an end, as Warren got the third wicket of the day. Travis Birt the man to get out, as he edged a bowl straight into the hands of McGrath. 68/3, not the start I wanted at all.

T Birt - c McGrath b Warren - 19(37)

Taylor was now in, with not much pressure on him at all. We don't really expect him to do well in any of the competitions really as he doesn't even average 20 in either. He's still getting into the team somehow. A few boundaries later and the score is ticking nicely. We've picked ourselves up and are looking like we can make 150-200. The 30 over mark soon comes up and we are on the magical number of 111/3. Adnan has been superb and has got his 50 up, our first 50 of the OD season, and Taylor is on 9. Out of a 45 run partnership, Taylor has hit nine of those runs. A smile creeps onto some of the spectators and batsmen though as Hoggard bowls his last over, with 16 overs to spare. Bresnan is their main bowler now. He then nearly gets the wicket as Taylors almost snips one through, barely missing it. With 10 overs to go, we get our first 6 of the season. Adnan the man to hit it as he continues in search of that century. After 40 overs, with 10 left, we are 149/3. 19 runs later and they get the wicket. After a 100 run partnership, Taylor goes after trying to score at a quicker rate. White was the man to get him, but he played a great innings to stay in with Adnan all that time. Brilliant play.

Taylor - lbw White - 28(89)

Welch was the man in and he got a golden duck. White with the wicket again, clean bowling the all rounder. With no more runs added to the board, we stay on 168/5. Pipe, the last batsman, comes in and then after him it's into the bowlers.

G Welch - b White - 0(1)

Hat-trick ball... one run. At least they didn't get a hat trick. Adnan keeps the runs coming as we come to the last over. The last over saw us get 9 runs, but more importantly it brings up Adnan's 100. Our first 100 of the season and a great time to do it as well. Pipe ended the innings well also, as we make just under 200 runs.

Derbyshire - 193/5
Adnan 100
Taylor 28
White 2-31
Hoggard 2-47

Well the batsmen have done decently and nearly scored 200 against a good bowling attack. It's now our turn to bowl and I hope our bowlers can do better than expected. The sun will be coming out for their innings so perhaps they are getting lucky but we can still win this. We just need a good bowling performance.

Good win against Surrey, although a bit lucky ;)

Your bowlers need to bowl well in this match. Top class writing James

Ha, yeah just a tad lucky. Our bowlers batted extrememly well in the second innings. Hopefully they can bowl well against Yorkshire.

Cheers for the comment, Tom. Much appreciated. :)

Will get an update in today. Just had rugby and lots of sports after school and not enough time to write an update. Nearly a guarantee there will be one today. ;)

Yorkshire v Derbyshire - Yorkshire's innings

After a respectable effort from the Yorkshire batsmen, it was our time to bowl. It was a one man show though as Adnan scored 100* and just batted supremely with everyone. Taylor batted rather well as France and Borrington look to steal a place against Sri Lanka. Even with Adnan's effort, it might of been in vain, as Yorkshire have quite a good batting lineup which includes the likes of Vaughan, Wood, Lumb and Lehmann to name a few. The bowlers have to do incredibly well.

Dean and Jones started the bowling for us which resulted in an early wicket. Matthew Wood going for a duck after getting out to Kevin Dean's 7th bowl! A edge was heard from the umpire, who sent Wood on his way to give us the perfect start. 2/1.

M Wood - c Pipe b Dean - 0(4)

Jones came in at the other end and bowled a good over getting no wickets, but only conceding one run. Into Dean's next over, and he gets his second wicket of the match, which will no doubt be the most important. England captain Michael Vaughan, who scored 178 against Nottinghamshire in the opening First Class match, completely messed up his cover drive. The shot he plays so well just was not good enough though as he edged it straight to Adnan. 100* and a catch, the catch of Michael Vaughan. Not a bad match for Adnan. 3/2 and this really is the perfect start.

M Vaughan - c Adnan b Dean - 2(5)

The opening spells between Dean and Jones saw no more wickets, but it didn't see that many runs either. 32 runs off the first 10 overs, with both bowlers really having a good start to the match. The only bad thing is that Lehmann and Lumb were starting to get comfortable and if they did get comfortable, it would be hard to remove them.

In came Lungley and Botha to try and get them out. It didn't go at all well as after 20 overs, they had raced to 86/2, with them now in the driving seat. Welch came in for Lungley and almost got a wicket straight away, but Lehmann knocked him away for a single to pick up his 50. It didn't go well though as the bowling changes weren't resulting in us getting wickets.

At the 30 over stage, they were in clear control. They had only scored 28 runs off the last 10 overs but they only needed 80 runs with 8 wickets in hand. With bowling changes galore we expected a wicket. But to no avail. No matter how hard our bowlers tried, they couldn't get the wicket. Then, out of nowhere, we got a wicket! Lehmann, who had been their best batsman, had played around a bowl from Lungley and had been deemed lbw. His 84 was indispensable to the teams innings though and had guided them to 150/3, thanks to a 147 run 3rd wicket partnership.

D Lehmann - lbw Lungley - 84(128)

The 40 over mark came up. 158/3 the score. Yorkshire require 36 runs with 7 wickets left, at 3.6 an over. Not too hard for them, but you never know, they might have a mighty collapse. Every bowler has 2 overs left, so heres hoping they use them well. That plan was soon out of the window as they scored 28 runs in 5 overs, meaning they needed 8 off the last 5 overs. Not hard at all. We did manage a last wicket though, Anthony McGrath the man to go. 190/4, 4 runs needed.

A McGrath - b Dean - 14(23)

A wicket maiden! They now need 4 runs of the last 3 overs with 6 wickets in hand. All they need is a boundary and they would win. Welch came in and bowled an incredible over, only letting one run in the over. They now need 3 runs off 2 overs. An easy target but we've slowed them down! Lungley would come in to bowl this over, with Welch bowling the last over, if it got there. The bad thing is that Lungley has been our most expensive bowler. Somehow though, he only let them score one run in his over, that being a wide. Yorkshire now needed 2 runs to win. 1 run to draw. Welch to bowl the final over, with the stage set and the fans on the edge of their seats. No run off the first ball, but they get a run off the second. Welch now has to bowl insanely well to make sure they don't get any runs off the last 4 bowls. The scores are tied... He's done it! Oh my god, incredible stuff. 3 runs off the last four overs secures a tie in our first One Day match. What a start to the season.

Derbyshire - 193/5
Adnan 100*
Taylor 28*
White 2-31
Hoggard 2-47

Yorkshire - 193/4
Lehmann 84
Lumb 80*
Dean 3-34
Lungley 1-53

A point in our first One Day game and I keep up my unbeaten run as Derbyshire coach. It was a tight game, which Yorkshire should of won. They only needed four runs off the last four overs but they could not get it. Adnan and Dean were just awesome for us today and carried our batting and our bowling. Adnan got what he deserved, getting the Man of the Match award. A good game, made even better with us getting a point. I'm delighted to say the least.
