Draft: The Layer Cake Draft

Lucky Dip Player 35...

16945.jpg

:sco: :ar: Gavin Hamilton

Nominated by
: @blockerdave

Rejected by: None

Test stats: 0 runs an 0 wickets in 1 match
First-class stats: 2,939 runs @ 26.24 (2 centuries, best 125) and 249 wickets @ 25.76 (9 5WI, best 7/50) in 95 matches

Of all the players England anointed as "Next Botham" in the '90s, Gavin Hamilton had the worst time of things. Plucked out of the Scottish World Cup side to tour South Africa, it like... really didn't work. Scores of 0 (6) and 0 (3) from number eight demonstrated that he wasn't as good at batting as Allan Donald was at bowling. There's no shame in that. Unfortunately, he also conceded none for 63 from his fifteen overs as England's fifth seamer, and that innings defeat would be his only experience of Test cricket.

And the player goes to... @Dutch

Lucky Dip Player 36 (of 36)...

400px-Hutton_1947.jpg

:eng: :bat: Jack Ikin

Nominated by
: @Bevab

Rejected by: None

Test stats: 606 runs @ 20.89 (best 60) and 3 wickets @ 118.00 (best 1/38) in 18 matches
First-class stats: 17,968 runs @ 36.81 (27 centuries, best 192) and 339 wickets @ 30.27 (11 5WI, best 6/21) in 365 matches

And the final player is someone who just couldn't get the hang of Test cricket, despite a skillset that should have made him the perfect middle-order batsman and second spinner. He got plenty of starts throughout his time with England, but didn't convert a single one to a significant score.

And the player goes to... @CerealKiller

Okay so what do I mean by seedings? Well, the random nature of the Lucky Dip means that some teams - @blockerdave and @Dutch - are looking rather stronger than others - @Bevab and @DalePlaysCricket - through no real fault of your own. So my solution to that is to create a set order for all six remaining rounds of the draft.

I shall post the draft order soon, but first there's the small matter of the rest of the rejected players...

  1. Gavaskar:ind:
  2. Lloyd:eng:
  3. ?
  4. Ranji:eng:
  5. Chase:wi:
  6. ?
  7. ?
  8. ?
  9. ?
  10. Tufnell:eng:
  11. ?
Two world class players and three solid domestic performers, I'll take that although looking at the sides of @Aislabie and @blockerdave makes me quite jealous! That Panesar nomination and rejection was a proper good move, wonder why I hadn't simply thought of that.

@CerealKiller thanks for backing me up with that Rubel pick mate, was counting on ya. :spy
:thumbs :p

This bloke was the first name on my lucky dip nomination list before I realised that it was actually a random lottery which would mean it would be unlikely for me to nab him especially if anyone else went for him. AbD is a fine pick but the very position @DalePlaysCricket wants to play him in is named after an entirely different legend in South African cricketing history, arguably the finest left-handed batsman of all time according to the Don himself. Welcome to this weird and wonderful side, :saf::bat:Graeme Pollock.

The top four is basically set in stone right now. Gavaskar's defence is pretty much impossible to get past and Lloyd is unlikely to be a massive downgrade on Chauhan, Gavaskar's regular opening partner in his Indian career. I would trust the only opener in test history to never have been dismissed to guard his wicket with all his life even at the cost of fewer runs, especially given that he played for eight more years after a devastating injury that would have caused forced retirement or a significant performance reduction in most other players.

Once the openers have done their job of tiring out the opposition, we have two of the most elegant batsmen in history at three and four who will go after the bowlers with aggression and keep our fans entertained alongside racking up those runs.

@CerealKiller is up now.

Didn’t get any alert

With 3 spinners in my XI already (4 counting Ikin), i need a world class pacer, and who better than Dale Steyn, the greatest bowler of a generation that, more than any other, has favoured batsmen?
Also, hopefully our home ground will be a rank turner :p
