Story The PlanetCricket Ashes [ICC 2008]

Did any think there, right there, that I might be the best Number 3 in years?

By my reckoning there was always 3 sessions in a day of cricket?

This current partnership is annoyiong me :mad tbh English are pretty slowish :p

The run rate is a fraction slow but I feel with Will and Ollie set at the crease, they can start to up the run rate and pile on the runs as we have Tom, Burnsy & Captain Magnifico himself to bat.

WC as captain? Lee, don't be a fool will ya? Your disrespecting the Ashes. And till that is rectifiied (It doesn't even have to be me ffs):

wtf, why isn't our vice captain playing? Michael Clarke not in the Australian team is like Ponting not in the team. He needs his deputy!

Why is a guy who has no Australian relations and has never been to Australia, captain of Australia? And where's the third session?

DAY 1

urn.jpg

The sun is casting long shadows over the ground as the players return to the field for the last session of this momentous day. 167-2, England are on top.

EVENING

70.2: Will NA caresses one for four off biggy09 and brings up the 200 for England.

Englan 200-2 (422 balls)

70.4: There it is! A brilliant moment for the PlanetCricket Ashes debutant Will NA! Batting no.3 he raises his bat to the crowd on the occassion of his century!

Will NA 100 not out (190 balls) 9 fours, 0 sixes

71.4: That's absolutely plumb. Unlucky for Will NA. Kept low from IloveGilly. A fantastic innings comes to an end. My word, Australia needed that. The partnership between Will NA and Holdenator was 126.

Will NA lbw b. IloveGilly 101 (193) 9 forus, 0 sixes

Coming out now is Highlander999.

72.1: Holdenator carries on where he left off with Will NA. A nice shot into the off side allows him to run the single that brings him his half century.

Holdenator 50 not out (126 balls) 5 fours, 0 sixes

74.5: Cheap wicket to give away. Holdenator has looked so good, but an overconfident smack on the on side goes straight down the throat of Roofrom50 who was brave to be standing so close. Australia are getting back into this.

Holdenator c. Roofrom50 b. biggy09 57 (136) 6 fours, 0 sixes

Burnsy1 had to put down his cup of tea and strap the pads on. Here he comes.

82.6: Australia take the new ball from the umpire. About 45 minutes left.

84.4: Covvy takes a catch off his own bowling. Highlander999 was looking as if he had just settled, now he's gone. This is a big session for the tourists.

Highlander999 c&b. Covvy 23 (41) 3 fours, 0 sixes

The captain himself comes out to the crease. It's evertonfan.

93.4: Goodness me, what have you done, Burnsy1! 15 balls left in the day and he edges a biggy09 delivery to OffCutters behind the stumps and the Australians are ecstatic! The captain gave him a look that could have made him turn to stone.

Burnsy1 c. OffCutters b. biggy09 11 (48)

PaulNixon1 didn't expect to have to come out tonight, but here he is.

95.6: The bails are off and it's stumps on day one. The Australians have really pulled themselves back into it in the evening session, but England shouldn't be too disappointed with where they are. The captain is still out there so they should be looking for another 50 or so tomorrow.

Stumps, Day 1
England 1st innings: 290-6 (96 overs)
evertonfan 32*, PaulNixon1 5*

We'll look back at the day soon. Join us for that.

Not a bad effort that for Day 1. I feel if the tail wags and Captain Magnifico fires, we can get to 380-400 and get the Aussies in to bat.

Kept low? Of course it did. The only way Australia could get me out was a grubber.

Talk about a middle order collapse. Things look just about even now.

PLAY OF THE DAY - DAY 1

urn.jpg

Every day there will be a Play Of The Day, one performance from one of the teams that will be looked at in depth.

england-flag-1.jpg

WILL NA - 101 (193) 9 fours, 0 sixes

England lost an early wicket, and on such a historic morning, looked nervous. Patting adyhorn on the back was Will NA, the outspoken number 3 under pressure.

On the way to the crease, he sledged Aussie captain WORLD CHAMPIONS, remarking 'Are you lost or something? You ain't Aussie, fool!'. He then began to build his innings, and carried on after Simbazz's wicket to make a strong partnership of 126 with Holdenator.

Will NA favoured the off side during his long innings, scoring 70 on that side of the wicket. It was indeed a long innings too - 101 runs coming off 193 balls over 253 minutes at a strike rate of 52.32 provided the perfect anchoring innings for the English.

However, it was not a faultless knock - he was subject to 2 LBW appeals (one of them successful) and also had a catch put down off his bat.

He was looking tired when he rapped on the pads to see the finger go up in the evening session. Will NA's wicket sparked a middle order mini collapse that left his side 290-6 at the end of the first day

Will NA 101 (193) 253 minutes, 9 fours, 0 sixes, strike rate 52.32

See you tomorrow for all the action from day 2.
