Fleming lashes out at quality of pitches

Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming have expressed concern about the quality of pitches being used in some of the games in the ongoing TVS Cup. The comments came after the one-day international between Australia and New Zealand at Pune started with a rush of top-order wickets, just as their earlier face-off at Faridabad did.

"They've got it wrong," said Fleming, in a report on the BBC's website. "You can't start this early with wickets like this, there's no point."

In the TVS Cup, India are playing all their games in day-night situations, which Fleming pointed out as a case of double standards. "It's a case of two competitions going on," he said. "Australia and us play one competition where it seams around and it is tough to bat, and India play another one where it gets slower and slower and turns.

"We've been on the wrong side of it twice and it makes the next game a lottery as well," Fleming added. "We can complain, but it won't matter. It will fall on deaf ears because India are not playing.

"So much rides on the toss. At least in New Zealand it seams for 100 overs, here it seams for 25 and after that it's a belter."

Australia won both games against New Zealand, but Ponting agreed that the early starts made a dent in the top-order. "I was telling some of our guys that the wickets at both Faridabad and Pune would have been ideal for day-night games after they got a few hours to dry out," he said. "India are trying to better their wickets for the standard of their own cricket, but they've just left too much juice in them for one-day cricket."

On the part of the BCCI, a spokesman said that both teams had been had been presented with the itinerary a month before the series began on October 23, and that neither team had raised any objections.

Anil Kumble will miss India's next match in the TVS Cup against New Zealand at Cuttack, due to the death of his father. The Indian team sent condolences to the Kumble family for this bereavement.

Sairaj Bahutule, the legspinner from Mumbai, has been included in the squad as Kumble's replacement. Aashish Nehra looked comfortable during a four-hour team practice session on Tuesday and is likely to play in the match at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Murali Kartik, the left-arm spinner, is also a likely replacement for Kumble in the playing XI.
