West Indies Tour of Australia 2010

I'm not the one saying it,

Didnt I just quote you saying it?

what about the legions of people around here that were saying WI will be a much stiffer opponent than Pak, even taking into account the injured players? What about the fact WI havent won a match vs Aus since 2006? Bloody woeful team even with their injured players available. Truly embarrassing stuff to watch. Stick to 20/20 I think. I dont see Wi ever getting above 8th on the ICC rankings, they would have to actually beat a team other then Bangladesh......

Legions of people were saying that a full strength WI squad would be a much stiffer opponent then Pakistan. That was the full strength Pakistan team in tests and ODIs and they got rolled over. Even in tests the WI were missing a few players and they still put up a fight, unlike Pakistan who just rolled over and died.
You are no different then those Aussie journalists who went after the WI when they lost the 1st tests and were quickly shut down in the 2nd and 3rd test. Like Cozier said, nobody was calling for the Aussies to stop playing cricket when they were getting run over by the WI by a innings in every tests.

Barath
Gayle
Sarwan 43
Chanderpaul 41.6
Bravo 24 bat, 29.6 ball
Pollard
Ramdin
Benn (not my first choice) 71
Taylor 26.5
Edwards 30
Roach

Gayle
Morton 34 (would be one of the rare guys keeping his spot)
Dowlin 36
Simmons 21
Deonarine 19
Pollard
Ramdin
Smith 14 bat, 37 ball
Miller 39
Rampaul 34
Roach

See the freaking difference.

Hey can anyone tell me why is Sarwan and Chanderpaul not playing??

Both are injured. As are Taylor, Edwards, Barath.

WI full strength team didnt manage to cause us much trouble in 2008, no reason why they would all of a sudden challenge us now.

Maybe they are just bad first match players, and settle down as the series progresses.

Another point is- I am actually different to those journalists because I actually used my hard earned money to go and watch that crap, so I have every right to feel ripped off. As I have all season.

No reason for WI to challenge anybody but yet they still manage to do it in both formats. Against the English, Safers, Lankans even Aussies somewhat in tests.

Then why go if you knew you would get ripped of, according to your point above.
Surely you didnt take the word of a few armchair selectors behind a computer...

Indeed. I'm of the opinion that all of the test nations have plenty of talent, they ones that fail reguarly have more mental issues than anything else. You really have to wonder what Pollard was thinking going the tonk that early. You just wouldnt see Clarke/Ponting/Hussey doing that with the entire match at stake and the lower order to come, even though they couldve gotten away with it, its not worth the risk. That was Pakistan's problem too- gifting wickets away regularly.

Pollard doesn't even compare to the class of Clarke/Ponting/Hussey. Thats why I said that Bravo/Sarwan/Chanders would have made a difference because they don't mind playing for 1s and 2s. They can play that long innings required in a situation like yesterday. Bravo himself is a aggressive batsman but he would know better because he is a senior and more experienced player.
A few pages back I said that there is nobody there to stop a collapse which is exactly what Sarwan, Chanderpaul and Bravo can do. They would have been there to guide a guy like Pollard and talk to him in between every ball and get him to play a responsible innings.

Powerful but can anyone slow down a collapse? I doubt it. Only Morton can do it. Smith and Pollard cant.

Way too harsh on Pollard IMO. He batted well until he got out and that shot was on, he was just undone by some pretty good bowling and didn't get to the pitch of it.

I mean it's not like he went charging down the wicket and got out to a ball that wasn't there to hit.

I agree, but i think once you've made it to international cricket you really have to be aware of the match situation and play accordingly. After watching Pollard bat sensibly for a few overs you could just tell he was busting to plant one in the stands and just couldnt resist the Hauritz nude ball, thats pretty soft stuff. I like watching Pollard, he has immense potential, lets hope it isnt limited to tonking a few 6's and thinking his work is done. Thats 20/20 for you. :(

When I saw that he signed to play in the KFC I wasn't really happy. Trinidad and Tobago were playing domestic cricket at that time and if he really wants to represent the West Indies then he should work on his game and get some consistency in ODIs and First Class cricket.
He did well with the ball in the match which I didn't really expect that much.

It's probably the best I've ever seen him with the bat in hand tbh, he actually looked sort of classy in a way. Most of the other times I've seen him bat in international cricket he looked like he was struggling to even push simple singles and then would get caught out going for the big heave hoe.

Howsie added 1 Minutes and 17 Seconds later...

Yeah what's the deal with that, does the WICB actually allow it's players to play in another domestic comp while it's one is running?

Honestly I have no idea. Gayle, Smith, Bravo were away too. They did stop Roach from doing it but that was to prevent him from being overused so early into his career. Not happy about it one bit.

Hopefully Gibson with all the powers he has can prevent such flip ups from happening again. And get peoples priorities straight.

I am 100% positive that Wavel Hinds will find a spot in the XI for the next match. He can provide some experience to the middle order.

Pollard's shot was on, it is just it wasn't well executed. Good bowling by Hauritz though, consistently getting it on that length that's juicy but not a half-volley.

You're a hard man Robelinda. I agree with Howsie, Pollard looked good, but to expect him to knuckle down and play like Rahul Dravid is unrealistic. Sure, he could have done better but he was picked for his explosiveness. Pick Nash if you want more stodgy batting at #6, but it would be an admission of fear.

And before we bludgeon the Windies for playing badly - at least give some credit to the bowling. It wasn't easy out there and Australia bowled pretty well. And West Indies certainly weren't out of it. They only needed 6 an over and if Pollard and Simmons had managed to ride out the storm they would have chased that down thanks to Australia stalling again.

Compared to the king of slogging (Afridi) Pollard was well and truely pale in comparison. He did well in his stay at the crease, he got a start but threw his wicket away which every single batter has done.

And you have to remember what he did with the ball, he got 3 wickets and had Ponting effectively out twice, when Australia had 300 in their sights his bowling restricted Australia to 256.

Pollard has a lot of potential with the bat, had it been Afridi, he would have attempted the six shot first ball. It isn't Pollards role to play the nudge one around innings, that is the 5 batsmen that were in front of him. I think the West Indies will win an ODI in this series if the top order give him a good enough platform to fire.
