I'd give India Alastair Cook, in exchange for Virender Sehwag or Gautam Gambhir. Not fussy, either one are far better options than Cook.
I don't know how Cook as avoided being dropped, he started his career well but has tailed off so badly. I don't expect him to go on to a hundred if he gets to fifty, he is as liable as anyone to be out early and so, if he does outlast Strauss, he normally falls just when England need him not to - or at least could do with an anchor when he is well set.
Alistair Cook (49 Tests)
Inns : 89
Not Out : 5
Runs : 3536
Average : 42.10
100s : 9
50s : 20
Catches : 47
Looks good on the face of it, but he has scored just THREE hundreds in his last TEN series including this (so one every third series)
Tests 01-07 : 594 runs @ 59.40 (3x100, 2x50)
Tests 08-14 : 443 runs @ 31.64 (1x100, 1x50)
Tests 15-21 : 621 runs @ 47.77 (2x100, 3x50)
Tests 22-28 : 533 runs @ 41.00 (1x100, 4x50)
Tests 29-35 : 443 runs @ 36.92 (0x100, 5x50)
Tests 36-42 : 493 runs @ 49.30 (1x100, 4x50)
Tests 42-49 : 409 runs @ 34.08 (1x100, 1x50)
He's scored just 1500 runs in his last 44 inns. Here's an interesting breakdown, shows how often he gets out before he gets in, and how often he gets out when he's got in
DNB : 9
00-09 : 18
10-24 : 25
25-49 : 17
50-65 : 13
66-99 : 7
100+ : 9
So in 20 of his 89 innings he gets to 50 but not to 100 (22.47%), but worse still he gets to 50 and doesn't reach 66 in 13 of those 20 innings (14.60%) so effectively he's scoring a moderate 50 every seven innings and getting out which lets the side down. In those 13 innings he's scored 761 runs @ 58.54, nice from his own personal records perspective, but 50s don't very often win matches. You can't do much as an opener if you get out early, except our batsmen tend to give their wickets away cheap, but to get to 25 as often as
46 times out of 84 (nearly half the time) and be out for no more than 65 on THIRTY occaisions is poor.
