Preseason
game 3
Sussex 192-10 off 40 overs.
R.Montgomerie 38 off 72
G.Wagg 3/34
Derbyshire 167-10 off 42 overs.
S.Stubbings 46 off 67
G.Wagg 46 off 69
M.Yardy 3/52
Sussex posted a low score aftr a poor middle order performance left them on the ropes for a while. They managed to scrape their way to something respectable thanks to some contributions from the lower order but Derbyshire bowled very well and deserved their advantage. Wagg took 3/34 off just 3.4 overs! Mark Chilton looked in good touch on 21 before smashing it straight down the man at long ons throat inches from being a 6. Although this is a relatively low total with Sussex's bowling it will be a tough ask for Derbyshire.
Derbyshire looked to be cruising before a collapse of their middle order left their chances hanging by a thread. A fighting knock from man of the match Wagg however got them back in control and with 3 wickets left they were crusing to their target in the last 10 overs but then another collapse sparked by some shockin running and great death bowling by Kirtley meant that Sussex were able to clean up and take the win. Derbyshire did show how they were more than capable of winning repeatedly but the pressure got to them and today Sussex's men were a class above despite the big names not firing. The great Sachin Tendulkar failed to impress on his Derbyshire debut like team mate and captain for India Dravid did for Sussex with Dravid getting a duck after being bowled out and Tendulkar getting run out for 5. Still things look promising for both sides.
game 4
Warwickshire 306-10 off 39 overs.
M.Jayawardene 80 off 83
M.Wagh 70 off 92
C.White 2/26
Somerset 292-10 off 47 overs.
A.Gilchrist 70 off 80
M.Wood 53 off 40
M.Wagh 5/88
A thriller down at Edgbaston in a very high scoring game showed 2 of the stronger sies in this competition really have some fun with the bat. Warwickshire posted a mammoth 306 off just 39 overs only stopping because of their regular loss of wickets. Englishman Ian Bell failed with the bat and so did star keeper Sangakarra but their lower order produced some serious runs and Mahela Jayawardene played a top knock of 80 off 83 on his Warwickshire debut. This would be a real tough ask for Somerset but with Trescothick and Gilchrist opening and Cameron White at 3 the rate wouldn't b an issue!
Somerset came so close before 2 silly wickets at the death lost them the game. Wagh was destroyed by Gilchrist but he got his man and this confidence boost lead to him running through the Somerset middle order but once again it was the lower order that fired getting the side from Tauton desperately close but still not close enough. Warwickshires attack looked shaky and the same could be said about Somerset but if these 2 sides bat like this every week then they will cause anyone a problem next season.
Gilchrist:warming up before playing a superb knock for Somerset
game 5
Essex 250-10 off 45 overs
W.Jefferson 59 off 67
M.Ealham 3/46
R.Sidebottom 3/48
Nottinghamshire 250-7 off 50 overs
C.Read 90 off 140
D.Bicknell 56 off 62
R.Bopara 2/2
Essex posted a solid total in their start to the season of 250 all out. The top order got starts but failed to capitalise and the top score came from former Notts man Will Jefferson. Some quality bowling from Ealham and Sidebottom kept the total down to something Notts could chase but at the same time Essex felt that they could defend.
In a thrilling chase that went down to the very last ball Essex managed to snatch a tie from the jaws of defeat as Nottinghamshire fell away at the end of their innings. Having not bowled a single over Ravi Bopara was given the ball for the final over with notts needing 4 to win,he picked up 2 wickets and Shane Bond was on strike for thelast ball,he mistimed it to mid on and notts didn't take the single. Earlier Chris Read hit a solid but unspectacular 90 which really should have been match winning. 2 evenly matched sides here looking ready to go for the upcoming season. Thats the end of preseason, bring on the real thing!
