McGrath to retire after Ashes

Australia seam bowler Glenn McGrath will retire from international cricket after this year's Ashes Series. .
McGrath, who is 37, said playing his last Test on his home ground in Sydney next month would be a "fantastic end" to his Test career.
McGrath has taken 555 wickets in 122 Tests and is third on the all-time list behind Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan.
"Sydney will be my last Test match which will be a fantastic end for me because this is my home ground and my favourite ground in the world," McGrath told a news conference in Melbourne on Saturday.
"It's only in the last few games that I've really thought about [retirement]. It is a tough decision as well as being an easy decision.
"Everything is exactly where I wanted it to be but it is getting a lot tougher to leave home because the kids are growing up.
Australian newspapers had said McGrath might retire before that tournament to help his wife Jane in her battle against cancer.
McGrath took eight months out of the game earlier this year to take care of her before returning to action at the Commonwealth Bank Trophy in September.
"With the scrutiny I wanted to get it over and done with so i could concentrate on the Tests.
"Going through a Test match, trying to deny that I'm retiring without lying is a bit tough."
McGrath made a habit of dismissing the best of the world's batsmen - he claimed the wicket of West Indies star Brian Lara 15 times and England's Mike Atherton on 19 occasions.
Cricket Australia chief executive officer James Sutherland said McGrath had achieved the rare distinction of being a consistent match-winner in both Test and one-day cricket for 14 years.
"They say bowlers win matches - they must have been thinking of players like Glenn McGrath when they said that," Sutherland said.
"His remorseless accuracy and forensic probing of the slightest weakness in a batsman's technique is legendary."
Geoff Lawson, who preceded McGrath as a seamer with Australia and New South Wales, told BBC Five Live the announcement had not come as a complete shock.
"But for those who have been suggesting over the last few months that it may be the swansong for Glenn McGrath if Australia did regain the Ashes, it's not a surprise," he said.
"At 37, nearing 38, I suppose the body tends to find things a little bit tougher and therefore retirement becomes a much easier decision."

Australia v England
Test Series
1st Test At Brisbane

Match Conditions:

Time of the Day - Day 11.00am
Pitch: Normal pitch
Weather: Sunny/Warm 32*

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Gabba for the 1st Test Series against Australia vs England. Lets join Michael Slater down at ground level to talk about the pitch.

Thanks Mark Well this is a pitch that is in perfect condition. There is hardly anything wrong with this pitch, probably the best it has been looking in a long long time. There is hardly a scratch of Grass on the pitch, but there are little bits growing through the pitch but they wont affect any team batting no doubt about that. There are a few cracks up this end of the pitch, but once again i dont think that will advantage any team weather they are batting nor bowling, dont think it is a problem.
Just for you people watching at home, it is a beautiful day in Brisbane, just perfect for Cricket. Apporxomiatly 28 decrees at the moment, but the weather man said that it will peak around lunch time when we are expecting a high of 32 degrees for the whole day, just perfect for Cricket.

Australia have won the toss and elected to Bat

The Match is about to get under way. Matthew Hayden and Michael Clarke have settled at the crease for Australia as the 2 openers for Australia. Australian won the toss and elected to have a bat 1st, so England will feel disadvantaged as they will need to stay in the field with 30+ degree heat. But England will be looking to grab some early wickets so they dont have to bare the heat. The Ground is packed for the 1st Series at the Gabba, It is only early in the morning but the ground will be packed by the middle of the day with 40 thousand people are ecpected to turn up to this game for the whole 4 days.

It shd be an interesting match! :) I predict an early departure of Clarke as i feel he is bit a tough contestant for opening position.

Openers Troubling the Bowlers

Australia have started the 2007-2008 Ashes Series off perfect. Matthew Hayden and Michael Clarke are opening the batting for Australia as they won the toss and elected to bat. Stephen Harmison and Matthew Hoggard have been hit around by Hayden and Clarke all over the shop. The 1st over was a tight one by Harmison, just only conceeding 3 runs to the Aussies, compared to his match last year as his 1st ball went for a long ride, being a wide, Just shows you that England means business this year. Both Harmison and Hoggard have been bowling great lines to the batsman.

Stephen Harmison have started the Series off well bowling a good line and length to both Hayden and Clarke

Matthew Hoggard shared the new ball with Harmison which was a huge problem in last years game as Hoggard likes to swing the ball into left handers and usually troubles them really bad, but this year Australia only needs to worry about that with Hayden who actually plays Hoggard well. It was Langer last year that really was in trouble. But Hayden wasnt troubled and hopefully for Australia's hope that he doesnt trouble him again, but with Michael Clarke also opening, Hoggard will need to change his style to the right hander.
Hoggard in his 2nd over bowled a tight line and length, and was rewarded with a Maiden over, which kinda means nothing in Test Matches, but it is nice start for England knowing they have a bowler that just bowled a Maidan over, which will get them more confident in the field.
