Champions League Final LIVE

2r2aglf.png

1948: Inter have started well and Wesley Sneijder's weekend rest has clearly left him champing at the bit.

1949: And Inter's fans have started well, making much more noise than their opponents.

1951: A mistake from Patrick Vieira and his poor pass is pounced on by Fernando Torres. But as the Spaniard bears down on the Inter defence he makes a mistake of his own, ignoring the run of Albert Riera and going it alone. He is crowded out on the edge of the box.

1953: A scrappy spell, with mistakes on both sides and passes going astray. Maybe some Champions League final nerves.

1954: A clear-cut chance for Liverpool. Dirk Kuyt jumps well and nods the ball down into the heart of the box where Steven Gerrard cracks an effort on goal. An excellent save from Julio Cesar.

1956: Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson is in an advanced position but his low cross is cleared by Lucio after an air shot from Walter Samuel.

"It has been an even start, but the outstanding chance fell to Steven Gerrard. Chances are going to be few and far between in such big finals, so when they do come your way you will have to put them away."
BBC Sport's Phil McNulty in Madrid

1958: The noise from the Liverpool supporters is increasing.

1959: The pace of the game is not increasing. Slow and steady. Very "continental", just as the two managers must have wanted.

2000: Careless play from Cristian Chivu with a pass to nothing, backwards from an advanced position on the left flank. Again the predatory Fernando Torres pounces, but again he fails to spot the pass. When he finally sees Dirk Kuyt in space it is too late and his pass is mis-directed.

2002: Liverpool are threatening. Fabio Aurelio's deep pass is headed on by Fernando Torres to Albert Riera on the left. The fellow Spaniard flashes a cross-cum-shot through the area but Dirk Kuyt cannot get on the end of it.

2005: A shot for Inter Milan, but former Real Madrid man Esteban Cambiasso spears a long-range effort well wide.

2006: That's well wide as well, but heart in mouth time for Inter. Fernando Torres gets a glancing header to Dirk Kuyt's cross. Julio Cesar is quick off his line and but for his challenge Torres would have definitely found the target.

2008: Steven Gerrard's low free-kick fizzes just wide of Julio Cesar's right post.

"Guiseppe Baresi is like a jack in the box - he keeps getting up and down from his seat in the dug out as he's clearly not happy. In fact, he is fuming with how Inter are playing."
BBC Sport's Phil McNulty in Madrid

2010: Javier Mascherano gets a boot in the unmentionables from Mancini. Ouch. The Argentine Javier Mascherabo is back on his feet, but his eyes will be watering.

2011: The stats say Inter have had 55% of the possession. They need to do much more with it.

2013: Inter maintain possession well in the Liverpool half, but in the final third there is little threat.

2014: GOAL Liverpool 1-0 Inter
Jamie Carragher intercepts the ball on the edge of the area and strides forward before releasing Dirk Kuyt down the left. He holds off Lucio before squaring for the on-rushing Fernando Torres to poke home ahead of Maicon. It had been coming.

2017: A good response from Inter until they work a position for Maicon on the right of the Liverpool area. The Brazilian's high, hanging cross is a waste.

2021: Wesley Sneijder storms into the box to meet Goran Pandev's clipped cross into the box. The Inter playmaker gets their in front of Fabio Aurelio but is underneath the ball and his effort loops high into the stands.

2024: Fernando Torres gives a sarcastic thumbs up to referee Tom Ovrebo after the Norwegian judges him to have dragged down Patrick Vieira. It was a good decision. Maybe Torres was actually just giving him a thumbs up for a good decision.

2027: Inter are stroking the ball around, but yet again there is no end product to speak off. The substantial frame of Jamie Carragher blocks a cross and clears.

2028: Patrick Vieira makes amends after gifting the ball to Albert Riera by stealing it back. Are they the worst two players on the park?

2030: Cristian Chivu's dropping cross is turned behind by Pepe Reina. Esteban Cambiasso's poor corner fails to beat the first man, Steven Gerrard stooping to head clear.

2031: HALF-TIME Liverpool 1-0 Inter Milan
Not the best of 45 minutes from Inter, but there are signs that they can take something from this and a goal would really put the cat amongst the pigeons... so long as they have not conceded any more goals by then!

"It was completely Liverpool's half though Inter had some possession of the ball - but Guiseppe Baresi changed his system as the interval approached and that will surely be a sign of things to come after the break. Goran Pandev was a non-influence on the margins of the game, and he was brought inside to partner Samuel Eto'o as Inter switched to a more conventional 4-4-2 with Mancini and Esteban Cambiasso on the wings. Liverpool are so comfortable that the first signs of frustration were even being heard from Inter's fans in the closing seconds of the first half. Baresi will need some fine words in that dressing room at half-time."
BBC Sport's Phil McNulty in Madrid

"Inter are not playing well but we are only 1 down. If we can hold them longer then I think they will tire and maybe we can get the eqauliser."
InterMilan10

"1-0 Liverpool and its only just begun... more to come!"
Andy08192

Player rater: Wesley Sneijder, Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt lead the way. Down at the other end Esteban Cambiasso is set to pick up the booby prize ahead of the likes of Patrick Vieira and Albert Riera. An honourable mention - or should that be dishonourable? - for Maicon who is also scratching for some votes.

Champions League Final LIVE

2r2aglf.png

2047: The action resumes.

2048: The ball breaks for Wesley Sneijder on the edge of the area but his snap shot loops high and wide over the Liverpool goal.

2050: Pepe Reina is fully behind a tame effort from Cristian Chivu. None of the usual fizz from the Romanian's left boot.

2051: Shouts for a Liverpool penalty as the ball bounces up and hits Maicon's arm under pressure from Steven Gerrard. Accidental and outside the box.

2052: Samuel Eto'o flashes a header over. Alan Green the commentator is complaining about the sound on Radio Five Live, explaining "it's like commentating in a toilet".

2053: Mario Balotelli looks set to come on for Inter Milan.

2054: Liverpool easily clear another Inter corner. Here comes the change. Goran Pandev is the man to make way for Mario Balotelli.

2055: A wonderful save from Pepe Reina. He parries Wesley Sniejder's dipping shot from outside the area around his post. That chance stemmed from Mario Balotelli make a nuisance of himself to Javier Mascherano who inadvertently flicked on Cristian Chivu's long throw to the Inter Milan playmaker.

2057: Dirk Kuyt breaks down the left but his pulled back pass is behind his on-rushing Liverpool team-mates and Inter hoof the ball clear. The tempo's picking up.

2058: Wesley Sniejder leaves Albert Riera and Fabio Aurelio trailing in his wake before squaring the ball to Smauel Eto'o, but the Cameroonian fails to control on the edge of the area as he stretches for the ball.

2059: Esteban Cambiasso wins a corner on the left. He should have got a cross in mind. Liverpool cope easily with the corner.

2100: Tit for tat. End to end. A long Pepe Reina clearance is flicked on by Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt lashes an effort over from distance.

2102: Mario Balotelli climbs all over Fernando Torres as he looks to get on the end of a free-kick. It was as if he was going up a step ladder. He still manages to look aghast at the referee's decision.

2105: Foul by Maicon on Steven Gerrard as Liverpool look to break from halfway.

2106: Liverpool are standing firm as Inter push and probe for an equaliser.

2109: A little bit testy there between Javier Mascherano and Mancini. Things are getting less "continental". More eggs and bacon than croissants and coffee.

2111: Esteban Cambiasso's makes a nuisance of himself... to Mario Balotelli. The Argentine gets a faint touch to Samuel Eto'o's cross which takes it away from Mario Balotelli just inside the area.

2113: Jose Mourinho is getting edgy with his side on the back foot. He gets up from his seat for the first time and urges his team on.

2114: Fernando Torres is in agony on the touchline after a crunching challenge. Oh no he isn't. The referee refuses him treatment and he eventually gets back to his feet and back involved.

2115: Ryan Babel is ready to come on. Oh no he isn't. The striker has put on the number 22 shirt which belongs to Ignacio Camacho. He takes it off and looks to dig his own out of the LFC kit bag.

2117: Ryan Babel has found his own shirt now - the number 19 - and is on for Albert Riera.

2119: Patrick Vieira gives the ball away to Steven Gerrard on halfway and wrestles the Liverpool Skipper to the ground as he threatens to accelerate away from him.

2120: Steven Gerrard strokes the free-kick deep into the Inter area where Fernando Torres climbs higher than Lucio to meet the ball, but his downward header is wide of the target.

2121: A fast and furious passage of play, with neat fizzing passes in midfield and even Tom Ovrebo gets involved when the ball is hit at him.

2122: Inter are caught by Fabio Aurelio's long pass forward. Fernando Torres, in space, flicks the ball off the outside of his boot to Steven Gerrard, but Julio Cesar stays alert to the danger and saves well. There are 10 minutes left on the clock for Inter to take this final into extra time.

2123: A second change for Inter. Quaresma replaces Mancini. Guiseppe Baresi wants that equaliser. Mario Balotelli comes into the middle to partner Samuel Eto'o from the right.

2124: It has all got a bit tired and niggly with Tom Ovrebo blowing up for free-kicks left, right and centre. Dirk Kuyt is lucky to escape a yellow card. Tom Ovrebo signals the Liverpool man dived but does not reach for his pocket.

2125: Here comes the real number 22. Ignacio Camacho replaces the Argentine skipper Javier Mascherano.

2126: Five minutes left on the clock for Inter Milan to take this final into extra time.

2127: Ignacio Camacho looks to go past Cristian Chivu but is felled. Tom Ovrebo beckons for him to get up and stop messing around.

2128: Liverpool are drawing the sting from Inter just as their opponents would want to be ramping things up.

2129: Fernando Torres is getting involved after being fouled by Patrick Vieira. Not a good idea in a Champions League final with time running out. Get out of there and let a team-mate take their time over a free-kick.

2130: Ignacio Camacho shoots but it ends up nearer corner flag than goal.

2131: Mario Balotelli does not get enough purchase on a Cristian Chivu cross. Fabio Aurelio clears. Wesley Sneijder finally gets a first touch having come into the middle but it is not a telling one. He is too deep. Inter need him further forward.

2132: Just three minutes of added time to be played can Liverpool defend well?

2133: Walter Samuel chances his arm from distance and his shot takes a deflection. It is not a wild one off Daniel Agger and Pepe Reina is solidly behind it.

2134: A corner for Liverpool. In a melee of players Fernando Torres gets his head on the ball ahead of Julio Cesar's fist but the effort is wide.

2135: FULL-TIME Liverpool 1-0 Inter Milan
The celebrations begin in the Liverpool camp, as the Inter players begin to take in defeat. Liverpool outclassed Inter tonight, and you cannot say they do not deserve this.

Champions League Final LIVE

2r2aglf.png

2140: The Inter players make their way over to their fans. No tears, as they played well in the second half but at the end were completely outplayed by some great football played by Liverpool.

"Inter Milan's fans try to lift their players with a final show of defiance - but even the most partisan San Siro follower could not mount a convincing case against Liverpool's deserved victory. Real disappointment for Inter, but Liverpool deserve huge credit for their free-flowing approach, the wonderful pairing of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard was a constant threat. There is a huge party starting away to my right in the Santiago Bernabeu and it looks like it could go on for weeks."
BBC Sport's Phil McNulty in Madrid

2145: Referee Tom Ovrebo makes his way up with his assistants to receive their medals. No repeat of the semi-final controversy of the last season, tonight.

2146: Guiseppe Baresi - who has a rueful smile on his face - leads his Inter Milan players up. Baresi looks like a man who knows he has been beaten by a better side.

2147: Liverpool managering director C.M.C Pursow leads the way for the champions. Jose Mourinho picks up his second winners' medal of an incredible season as a manager, following the Premier League.

2150: Fernando Torres gets his hands on a Champions League winners' medal - and all the players are reaching out for a touch of that famous trophy.

2151: There it goes... Steven Gerrard, one of Liverpool's outstanding performers tonight, lifts the trophy into the air with a flourish and the gold and silver tickertape flutters down on the pogo-ing Liverpool players.

Inter boss Guiseppe Baresi: "The game started of well and and then we got a bit nervous after that. We had time to recover from the goal. We had some half-chances... but in fairness we were beaten by a better team. We weren't at our best after the first goal. In adversity, you always move forward quicker. We can learn from this. We can improve a lot."

"Wow!!! Great win for us. We played really well in the first half and scored the goal. The second half was equal but we dominated the game and importantly we defended really well. We also outplayed them and man marked their main players really well. Now time for some celebrations, oh forgot we play Chelsea on Saturday in the FA Cup final, hopefully we will win that and complete the treble."
From LFCGerrad08 on 606.

2157: England now have 12 European Cups, to Italy's 11. That is Liverpool's sixth triumph in Europe's biggest club competition, Man Utd have three, Nottingham Forest have two and Aston Villa have the remaining one title.

2200: No excuses from Walter Samuel either. He admits that Liverpool played well and were the better side and that none of the Inter players performed.

"Jose Mourinho is standing alone in front of the Liverpool fans raising the trophy. An inspired appointment. Inter Milan's players have left the stage to Liverpool and their supporters. Guiseppe Baresi's side can be proud of their efforts this season, but tonight they had to give best to the more accomplished team. Might be a long job getting all the Liverpool supporters out of the Santiago Bernabeu tonight. Great scenes and they deserve to enjoy this victory."
BBC Sport's Phil McNulty in Madrid

"We were very poor. But Liverpool were great. Congrats for their win. We wasted the ball so much, Cambiasso gave the ball away time and time again and Lucio looked shaky the whole game. And as for Eto'o, that's as bad as I have ever seen him play."
Interfan0912 via text 81111

2211: Some things to cheer up Inter Milan fans: you still won the league (for the fifth consecutive time), you still won the Italian Cup, you just lost to a better team. It's not all bad.

2215: Noooo. Is it time to go already? Congrats Liverpool and well played today, they deserved the win and we all have surely enjoyed some great football today. Farewell...See you soon.

Liverpool are on course to recreate history and become the third club in European football to complete the treble thanks Fernando Torres' first half goal which gave them victory over Inter Milan in Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu.

Torres slid in Dirk Kuyt's cross after 29 minutes to give Jose Mourinho's side the upper hand in the first half. Inter keeper Julio Cesar produced two brilliant saves from Steven Gerrard to keep the game in the balance. Pepe Reina denied Inter Milan the equaliser with a stunning second-half stop from Wesley Sneijder's long-range volley.

Inter Milan boss Giuseppe Baresi surprisingly selected Goran Pandev on the right flank and opted for Esteban Cambiasso instead of Dejan Stankovic in the middle of midfield. As for Liverpool, they gave a start to Albert Riera - and he proved an uninfluential figure as the Reds dominated the opening half.

Julio Cesar was called into action as earlier as the seventh minute, producing a marvellous reaction save to deny Gerrard from 10 yards out after the midfielder had run on to Kuyt's knock-down. Torres then failed to find Dirk Kuyt when he was unmarked in the area and also missed out as he tried to get his own header on target under pressure from Julio Cesar.

Liverpool's pressure looked certain to pay off - and they eventually took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Jamie Carragher's pass out of defence found Kuyt, who turned Lucio before providing a perfect cross for Torres to slide in from close range ahead of Maicon.

Inter Milan's attacking responses had been fitful, limited to a tame header from Sneijder as he rose to meet Samuel Eto'o's cross. And it was no surprise when a disappointing Goran Pandev was replaced by Mario Balotelli after 51 minutes.

The Italian under-23 frontman almost had an instant impact, challenging for a throw that fell for Sneijder, whose left-foot volley produced a brilliant save from Reina diving to his left.

Inter Milan penned Liverpool back for long periods after the break but were unable to create any clear-cut chances. Instead it was Julio Cesar who had to be alert, keeping out Torres's shot at his near post.

With the tension rising in the closing stages, Torres headed just wide after getting on the end of Gerrard's free-kick. Julio Cesar then produced a brilliant save to ensure Inter didn't concede any more goals, diving to his left to palm away a powerful, rising drive from Gerrard.

Fernando Torres headed a corner from Steven Gerrard wide just before the final whistle - and not even the most partisan Inter Milan follower can doubt that Jose Mourinho deserved to round off a dream first season in charge of Liverpool by adding the Champions League to the Premier League title with the FA Cup to play for on Saturday.

Liverpool boss Jose Mourinho: "We started the game really well and created many chances. We just needed to convert one of them and Torres did that and at the end it turned out to be the winner. I am very happy and proud of my Liverpool team. They have played brilliantly throughout the season in all competitions and we truly deserve this success."

Lee hails team spirit

2dkzsxs.png

Sammy Lee Liverpool assistant manager

Assistant manager Sammy Lee believes Liverpool's team spirit catapulted them to UEFA Champions League glory.

The Reds completed a stunning Premier League and European double on Wednesday as they downed Inter 1-0 in Madrid and will play Chelsea on Saturday in the FA Cup Finals. And Lee feels the cohesion among the squad played a huge part in Liverpool's successful 2009/10.

"It has been fantastic, waking up this morning could not have felt better," he told Sky Sports News. "It is difficult to express or say how we feel inside. It is a huge feeling. We feel very, very proud.

"The lads have been fantastic. The team was great. The win started from the team spirit within the club. We need to enjoy it. This is a unique moment and you cannot lose it."

Jose looks to build on win

34ffo09.jpg

Jose Mourinho celebrates after winning the Champions League

Jose Mourinho feels Liverpool's history has a 'far better ring' to it following the club's UEFA Champions League success.

Liverpool lifted the European Cup for the sixth time in midweek following a 1-0 victory in Madrid over Serie A champions Inter Milan thanks to Fernando Torres' first half goal. The triumph in the Spanish capital followed previous wins in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984 and 2005, and Mourinho is continuing to savour the achievement.

"Your satisfaction is fantastic," Mourinho told Sky Sports News when reflecting on the win. "To win the European Cup is a special occasion and you treasure these things. That's what you hope happens to your career.

"We had to wait five years to do it again and I suppose it proves it's not an easy tournament to win, so therefore we've gone a long way to eradicating our record of five victories in the Champions League. It's now six and that has a more better ring to it. Hopefully we can build on that."

Fernando Torres scored the first goal of the match in the first half, which turned out to be the winner, and Jose Mourinho was confident his team would prevail once they had taken the lead into half time.

He added: "We were creating many chances in the opening half hour and we needed one to be converted and Torres did that. We dominated the first half and had some more chances later which could have put the game to bed.

"But as we were ahead by half time, I fancied us to win it, as we knew we have conceded less goals in the second half than we have in first half. And it happened as I expected to, the tempo of the game was higher and our defending was really well and we also created some chances. It was a great moment."
