Ashes Cricket General Discussion

Out of curiosity, how big a problem is the career mode issue being mentioned? I've held off on Ashes Cricket so far and was hoping this patch would be the one to persuade me to go for it depending on the reception it gets here or what bugs are left or whatever...but Career mode is literally the only mode I play on these games, unless I'm setting up an AI vs AI competition for fun. Is it worth holding out a bit longer if there's something that still needs to be resolved? I'm not really in a rush anymore to be honest.
I pretty much only play career mode and the posts saying it's broken are highly misleading. That said, I don't know the extent to which the patch will impact career mode...i.e. will it benefit from a restart or will carrying on with an existing career still work? However, if you're not in a hurry, then waiting for the patch is probably the best option.

Although I do enjoy career mode, and it has had some good improvements from its start with DBC14, it could also do with a redesign for any future release. The sudden jump in stats is, for me, annoying rather than game-breaking but overall there are tweaks, changes and fixes that could make this mode far more compelling than it currently is. I wouldn't expect any substantial change in this direction with the patch but I do hope for a better career experience should BA produce another cricket title. As I say, I do like it...but I can see so much potential for improvement.

The career mode has two main issues...

1. Incorrect stats.
2. Sudden jump in attributes, say from 40 to 80-90.

If you can live with these, go ahead. For me incorrect stats is a deal breaker and if the patch is not able to fix it, that will be it for Ashes Cricket just like it was for DBC 17.

Question,

Only DBC games have had career modes.

Could you not enjoy a proper Test Series with fun and realistic gameplay.

Is that not what you may have done prior to the DBC series?

Just asking as I don’t even play career when not testing.

That's all well and good, but why have it in the game then? I'd say a sudden jump in career stats, when it's an integral part of the game is game breaking.

Ashes Cricket is packed full of features that do absolutely nothing (although apparently the patch is addressing a lot of that).

For me, I like the progression and accumulation aspects of career mode. It's akin to an RPG where your player all of a sudden goes from a level 10 to a level 100 with maxed out stats, but you are still fighting lvl 20 enemies. The progression IS the game in a sense. The stats, while varying levels of annoying for those of us with mild OCD, isn't necessarily 'game breaking' but more immersion breaking when you can't track how many runs your player has scored, accurate averages, etc. It makes you care less about the game, which then means you drift to other games instead.

With regards to other cricket games, I'm pretty sure SWC99 had some sort of 'Tour' mode that let you play as a country in 10 years of tours to become top rated test nation, etc... although I could be wrong and looking back with rose tinted glasses? It also tracked stats like runs, wickets, etc and that was back on OG PS1! On a 8MB memory card! How can a game in this day and age, with the power of cloud computing and 'near' infinite storage not manage to get stats correct?

*Edit* that last paragraph may seem unnecessarily harsh, but just pointing out that previous cricket games have had stats and a 'lite' career mode. Otherwise, the only time I played SWC99 was against a friend in local multiplayer. I'm not one for play for play's sake - probably why I don't really like the multiplayer experience unless I'm building up my character (even then it seems slightly pointless as there's no end in sight).

The only reason I play the game is for the career mode and while these bugs can be immersion-breaking I can still play it with a good degree of enjoyment.

Still, it seems like a pretty massive oversight. Stats are everything in cricket (for me anyway). How hard is it to get someone to play through a couple seasons to see if errors like these occur? I'd even play a few seasons to make sure things that could be an issue are looked at.

I used to play one off matches and series in older cricket games 10 years or so back but since then I've gotten used to playing career and online modes in other sports games from Madden to FIFA to Top Spin 4 to Tiger Woods/Rory McIlroy PGA Tour etc. I exclusively play career and online modes in sports games so yes I may play a few casual cricket matches on Ashes cricket but it won't keep my attention for long - probably a couple of weeks at best.

If I'd known Ashes Cricket would have the same bugs in career mode which DBC 17 did , i.e. incorrect stats, I wouldn't even have purchased the game. I was taken in by the "we back our products and Ashes Cricket game will have the best support of any Big Ant game till date" spiel as I trusted Ross to keep his word. Not anymore and will not make the same mistake again in the future.

The DBC 17 situation is pretty much what put me off this time round to be honest, not to mention having to pay an inflated price for a similar game less than a year later. I decided to wait and see what people said, and it's been quite depressing to see the same kind of bugs and so on present. I'm not at all surprised that Ashes Cricket was pushed out to coincide with the actual series, but I'm really over the whole 'it's okay to release a broken or incomplete game for full price and then maybe if you're lucky we might fix it later on at some vague point in the future' approach. Maybe that's because I grew up playing games where the game developers had to get it right first time and didn't have the get out clause of later patches to fix things (if they could be bothered). I know games are much more complex now but it still seems lazy and complacent to me if you keep doing it. If the game's not ready, then work on it until it is and then release it. If you're not marketing it as early access then don't be surprised when you release an incomplete or inadequately tested game at full price and find people are frustrated with it. We're now almost six months down the line for Ashes Cricket. If the career mode is no closer to being resolved then I guess I might just pass until the next game comes out...but I won't be ordering that on release day again either.

If the game play is solid for test after this patch and some improvements in ODIs ill be more then happy. To be totally honest i agrees with @WealeyH on career mode. After all this is the first game ever to have this feature

Lol at some now saying that since we did not have career mode before in previous games, questions about that certain in this feature should not be asked or is of less relevance. Its as simple, if you as a tester do not know just say no idea buddy but hey the patch is coming on 26th try it out. Do not over exaggerate by saying why can you enjoy this or that game mode. Everyone plays it differently and what you like or play is not what others like or play. Simple as that.

Simple as that. Always interesting how someone negates someone else's post as being too sweeping by making a sweeping statement that they know the actual truth.

Do we really need this conversation 7 days away from the patch. Seeing the number of biulds being tested am sure beta boys are super irritated and its just a pointless conversation. Lets wait for the patch then appriciate the importants and then only have a constructive dialogue about improvements. Come on
