Australia in New Zealand

The kiwis have lots of all rounders floating about. A number of batters too. Problem is they aren't up to scratch for the international leve.

Mitchell Johnson's dramatic season has continued with the Queensland left-arm fast bowler called into the Australia one-day squad as back-up for the final match of the Chappell-Hadlee Series. Australia secured the trophy with a two-run win last night, but Johnson was picked as cover for Brett Lee, who returned home for treatment on a nasal condition.

Johnson, a 24-year-old who has played only 12 first-class games, was due to fly to New Zealand this afternoon and Trevor Hohns, the chairman of selectors, said it would be a good opportunity for him to get a taste of the team's environment. "Mitchell is a young player that we've had our eye on for a while," he said. "We felt this was an ideal opportunity, with one game to go in the series, to get him involved. It is certainly a selection with a view to the future."

Dennis Lillee spotted Johnson at a North Queensland training camp when he was 17 and quickly labelled him a "once in a generation bowler". However, Johnson's rise into the state ranks was troubled by three seasons of injuries, mostly to his back, and he only became a first-choice player for Queensland this year. Johnson will join an inexperienced fast bowling squad of Bracken, Clark and Lewis in New Zealand for the final match at Christchurch on Saturday.

"Even though it's only for one match, I'm pretty excited to be given the chance," Johnson said. "I'm thrilled that the selectors even have me in their thoughts."

Hmmm interesting. I hope he plays over Bracken. Hes quick but to me too expensive right now. But what the heck we bring him over lets start him.

Australia are so kind. Now they have gifted us a free ODI win. I guess they decided we deserved one.

They should of sent over Gillespie. Then I might of seen him.

Damn me for using all my VCASH

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, that is why we all come here, to discuss/debate the game we love. It's just that your opinion is always entirely predictable, and always anti Australian. This I can understand. Any team that enjoys such a sustained period of dominance will always breed biterness against them. Nevertheless, I personally find it frustrating when you come out with such nonsensical comments as Brett Lee being 'crap', Ponting an ordinary captain... heck, at one point or another, you've labeled every Australian representative as not up to standard/over the hell, usually unjustly given all the facts.

About the Ashes defeat. There shouldn't be an Aussie defeat out there that can't congratulate the England side on an excellent series win, there's no two ways about that. That doesn't mean that we can't point out to some fans that were claiming England were the greatest thing since sliced bread, and Australia a spent force, that a comprehensive series loss to a lowly ranked and to this point disorganised Pakistan suggest England aren't quite all that just yet....QUOTE]

Well as you say the Aussie dominance is quite repetitive and boring. I don't hate the Aus team but i do dislike several players in the team. If these several players such as the 2 mentioned above are out of the team than I won't be as "anti-Australian". the rest of the Aussie team such as Gilchrist, Symonds, McGrath and Hussey I see are the best in the team and fully respect them. Now back to the topic NZ do have a much better chance of winning with Bond and Fleming back. If only they had won the second game ;) the series would have been even more interesting with Lee out.

Not just interesting Lee out, Johnson is in!
I still say Bollinger should have got in, or that great Taitster :)
But I'll take Johnson, he sounds good, fast left arm quick.

Nah Dizzy isn't at his best in ING. We don't want to smash his confidence again and then see him bowling crap in the test matches.
Good move bringing a young guy over plus this game is a dead rubber.

As said earlier in this thread they should of chose Johnson in the first place proably ahead of Clark but he's done pretty good so far. If Tait was fit than he would be first pick with Lee in the team.

I agree he should have been there. But Clark and Lewis have more than proved their worth. Expect to see both in the VB series.
I hope now Johnson gets a go. Bracken isn't the best and Jade Stadium is the quickest and most bouncy in NZ. So even more reason to pick Johnson.

Your right there, Jade is the best pitch in the country. Bond will get good pace. Can't wait.

It will also be a good opportunity for Gilchrist to get some runs. he is suffering a form slump and it'll be interesting to see the battle between Bond v Ponting and Gilchrist.

I reckon if Gilchrist continues to fail than I would put him down the order and call Jacques in the team :). He's the next best opener going around atm.

Him or Cosgrove are the form openers in ING although Cosy ain't an opener but hes going dam well.
I hope both get a go sometime next year.

Australia could have 2 international teams.

Lol just throw a NSW 11 and they will do the job :)

Lee returns home

Lee will miss the last one-day international ? Getty Images

Brett Lee will return home from New Zealand on Thursday to receive treatment for a breathing problem and therefore misses the last one-day international in the Chappell-Hadlee series at Christchurch.

Lee has experienced breathing difficulty, caused by a narrowing of his left nasal passage, which is thought to be related to the cellulitis (nasal infection) he suffered, and was treated for in hospital, prior to the Ashes tour this year. He sought medical advice in Wellington and will return to Sydney for consultation with a ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist.

Lee said it was important to get the problem sorted: "Whilst I am disappointed that I can't play the final match in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series, I am grateful that I can return home and give priority to getting my health right."

Australia wrapped up the series with a thrilling two-run win at Wellington, where Lee conceded 85 runs his 10 overs including 18 off the penultimate over of the match.

NO!!! :crying This is the worst thing ever! Can't wait to see him back in action!!

Hes a quick leftie. The great Dennis Lillee spotted him and labeled him a once in a lifetime generation bowler as the article above says. If a great fast bowler says that you listen to him. Hasn't been impressive as yet though.

And, I always pick him in the crappiest domestic team, after Greg Mail.
