Australia tour of South Africa, 2008/09

I like the look of McDonald, incredibly economical with his bowling. His arrival, along with that of North, is a big boost for that side.

Not sure about Hilfenhaus or Siddle though.

Siddle will play 15 times the tests McDonald does, if he stays fit. If ever McDonald's bowling was going to be suited to a wicket and the conditions, it was in this match. He did very well, though.

Yes I agree, McDonald certainly played his role well with the ball. He showed glimpses in Sydney of his potential to strangle the batsmen with accuracy and backed it up again here.

So I'm not going to say McDonald's crap blah blah blah - he's obviously not. But I hope the Aussies are NOT going to select a #8 based on the ability to contribute with the bat. Pick the best 4 bowlers please Hilditch, especially given Mitch's ability with the bat. He looks better than Lee and Warne and Australia has had no problem with playing them at #8 recently.

From all reports Hilfy bowled well and Ponting seems to like relying on him. He bowled a lot of overs which proves Ponting's confidence in him.

Ponting has shown massive faith in Hilfy through out the summer. Even when he was getting smashed at the death Ponting still went back to him to bowl. Right now he just needs to use his cutter a bit more often, that ball to get Boucher was a ripper and when he is swinging it he should also use the ball that goes straight which he showed he has.

If only McDonald had a bit more pace he could be one of the top bowlers going around. But his lack of pace means he will be a containing bowler rather than one that will takes a bunch of wickets. Have to bring in McGain for the next match though. I can't see Geeves getting a game this tour unless we lose another paceman.

You obviously didnt watch much of the match then did you?

Siddle has loads of aggression and his seamers will only get better, Hilf is the best swing bowler in Australia, and his tight bowling allowed johnson and siddle to attack from the other end.

mcdonald is no mug but Hilf and siddle stayers...Lee and Clark will have a tough job getting back in

Siddle is clearly going to be a star, the guy is 24 years old but is already one of our most prolific bowlers. Bowling against South Africa, the number 2 side in the world, he's been great in 3 out of his 4 tests against them.

Hilfenhaus showed some good things in his debut test, certainly is a dangerous bowler when it's swinging, he could be a real weapon in England too.

Siddle is good but he does seem injury prone. Could be a future Watson and thats something no one wants. Hilfy is dangerous for conditions in Engalnd and South Africa. Outside of that it may be a problem. I like Mcdonald. Bit of a bits and pieces player. If he performs with the bat there should be no reason to drop him.

Siddle reminds me of Craig McDermott! Remember him? Yea it's great that there's another Victorian doing well at the test level, I hope he has a great career. :)

I'd be amazed if Lee didn't get back into your side, and it would be stupid for him not to come back when fit.

An theres still our best swing bowler who cant get a game despite all the injuries.
Nathan Bracken why wont they give him atleast 1 test to prove himself.

Mcdonalds bowling is handy, nothing more, his batting is no good.
He cant make the side as just a bowler.
If we choose Mcgain only way Macdonald can play is if they drop North.
Then we have a weak batting lineup but good bowling lineup.
If Macdonald could bat he would be a good number 6 an alot more valuable than symo ever was..

But seriously his bowling isnt that good anyone bowling that slow has no trouble hitting the right line an length.
NZ 1 day team has plenty of them an thats why they can be hard to score runs off but thats about it.
Ricky ponting or mhussey bowling medium pacers for 20 overs would have been just as good as Macdonalds efforts.

Those who thought we should have enforced the follow on, I told you our bowlers were tired now they are in doubt for the 2nd test...

AUSTRALIAN pace bowlers Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus are in doubt for Friday's second Test because of injuries.
Siddle has soreness in his left foot and Hilfenhaus is carrying a lower-back complaint.

West Australian Steve Magoffin will fly to Durban todayas cover and is a chance to be thrust into the match, as is uncapped Tasmanian quick Brett Geeves, who arrived in South Africa two days ago after Doug Bollinger strained a muscle in his abdomen while bowling in the nets.

This is why you should play 4 specialist bowlers so that the workload is spread, our 3 frontline bowlers had to shoulder alot of the work in the 1st inns.

Like you mention, it's the balance of the attack I liked. Johnson and Siddle can pepper the batsmen because they know Hilfy and McDonald were able to restrict the run rate at the other end. That's why we ultimately picked Hauritz for a couple of Tests as the spinner, since Krejza couldn't stop the scoring. An attack full of wicket taking, aggressive bowlers may not be as effective without a relatively conservative, run stopping bowler.

Of course the great advantage of Hilfy is that if there is any swing he can exploit it, and that makes him a potentially dangerous containing bowler a la Glenn McGrath. All teams want those. However, I don't know whether Hilfy will be quite as economical is less favourable conditions.

Still I guess Stuart Clark is another viable alternative for the holding role and Nathan Bracken would also do it quite well too. Lee is more an aggressor so he might be competing with Siddle for a spot.

This is the great advantage of playing new players and seeing them do well, suddenly Australia has heaps of decent/good quicks: Lee, Clark, Johnson, Siddle, Hilfenhaus, Bollinger, Tait, Bracken. McDonald and Watson have shown they can do a good job with the ball too.

Talking of Siddle, how scary are that dudes eyes? Add those eyes to that awful facial hair and you've got one strange looking, scary ass fast bowler. I like him though, been impressed with what I've seen, not looking forward to seeing him bowling in England, if Jerome Taylor can destroy us on a slowish track in the Carribbean, then Siddle and Johnson could maul us. Hopefully they'll both trip over carefully placed cricket balls on the outfield and roll their ankles :p

Looking forward to Friday. India-NZ, Aus-South Africa and the final England-Windies Test, a heck of alot of cricket on Sky atm. Loving it.
