It seemed like Simpson had made a strange decision to throw the second new ball to Symonds, but he had bowled well earlier and on merit, seemed most likely to get a wicket. He bowled true medium pace, but the ball was moving for him and it reaped a dividend.

The new ball does a fair bit, but in between it is pretty slow and low and that's where batsmen made their runs, scoring 0/93 in the middle session, though there is some turn to be exploited by the spinners and that might be of more relevance later in the game. With Holland a surprising omission given the extended timeframe of the match, the combination of Simpson and Doran could well be an great advantage. White and Wade should get good conditions to start day 2 and with a few competent tailenders, they could well get to 400.
