Martyn Beaten By Pace - Australia 3/132

Damien Martyn threw away a promising start as Australia lost their 3rd wicket with the score on 132 to give Pakistan some hope in coming back into the match. After scoring a slow but gritty 22, Martyn was eventually beaten by a short ball from Rana Naved ul Hasan when he skied a pull shot. Rana worked hard to pick up the wicket of the number 4. Constantly tieing Martyn down and frustrating the Western Australian.

Gilchrist Continues To Lead - Australia 3/150 (30.0)

Adam Gilchrist continued to consolidate his sides position at the 30 over point in the reply innings as Australia edged closer to the 232 required for victory at 3/150. Needing a futher 82 runs to win the match and with 7 wickets still in hand, a victory is expected. Gilchrist has done is best to assure home fans of a first up victory with 64 from 71 while Andrew Symonds is relatively new to the crease on 8 from a lengthy 22 balls.

Kaneria With The Breakthrough - Australia 4/179

Leg Spinner Danish Kaneria made the vital breakthrough to leave Pakistan fans with some hope of a comeback with the huge wicket of Adam Gilchrist as Australia fell to 4/179. Gilchrist was eventually dismissed for a solid 73 to leave his side in a match winning position. It was a job well done from the wicketkeeper, who has been in superb form since the start of the season in South Africa.

Kaneria picked up the wicket of one of the worlds best one day batsmen as Gilchrist attempted to come down the wicket and loft the spinner. However Kaneria managed to slide the ball between bat and pad and take leg stump.

Kaneria Takes Two - Australia 5/192

Danish Kaneria took his second wicket to give Pakistan further hope in the opener with the wicket of in form batsman Michael Clarke for only 3 to move Australia to 5/192. Kaneria had the young star trapped plumb in front as Clarke attempted to sweep the leg spinner, the ball not moving and crashing straight onto his back leg.

However with Australia only 40 runs away from victory Pakistan will rely heavily on Kaneria and Shoaib Akhtar to attempt to give them a miracle and produce a lower order collapse.

Razzaq Works Wonders - Australia 6/207

Abdul Razzaq singled handedly put Pakistan back into the match when he sensationally ran out Andrew Symonds off his own bowling to leave Australia at 6/207. After Michael Hussey fended the ball to the leg side and called for a run, Razzaq acted quickly to move to the ball. Hussey then called no and sent Symonds back to the none strikers end, however Razzaq (in one motion) turned and threw to knock the stumps down to leave Symonds stranded still meters from his crease.

While the home side only need 25 to win, the brilliance of the Symonds run out may just spark the tourists into a thrilling finish.

Hussey Steers Home Side To Victory - Australia 6/232

Australian one day sensation Michael Hussey has steered his side home with a run a ball 27 as Australia cruised to a 4 wicket victory in Melbourne. Brad Hogg (9* from 18) assisted his Western Australian counterpart as Australia registered the first win of the VB series.

Danish Kaneria was the pick of the bowlers with 2/40 from 8.1 overs to be the only bowler to record more than one wicket.

Match Presentation

"Well we are very happy with the performance of the boys today. I thought our bowlers did very well early to contain the top order and then Hoggy bowled very well in the end to take the tail apart. Gilly was outstanding at the top and put us really in control. Im very pleased with the way we have started off so far and im sure we will improve."

Ricky Ponting
(Australian Captain)

"While we obviously arent happy with a first up loss, it definatly shows us the areas that we need to improve on in this competition. We need to have a good look at our batting so that we work together. I thought our bowling was very good and i was impressed with the way we worked away at the Australians."

Inzamam-ul-Haq
(Pakistan Captain)

"Im delighted with the way they came off the bat today. It felt really good early and it was just great to start off against the best team in the world and feel so comfortable. Hopefully this can continue on with the series and we can work together as a team to build some large totals"

Inzamam-ul-Haq
(VB Man of the Match)

(Inzamam-ul-Haq was in fine form with his 100 from only 98 balls)
