Australian ODI tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, June-July 2010

IN: P. Hughes, S. Marsh, M. Johnson

OUT: R. Ponting, M. Hussey, S. Smith

Unlikely but this is what we need long term, at least blood them before the World Cup. Drop Watson to 3.

EDIT: Ferguson honourable mention.

In excellent pitch Australia are managing just 211 with 5 over remaining. No one is looking to play big innings.

I don't agree with this, I just don't think he uses it enough. Even on defence he strikes it straight and true, and he's got the ability to play effectively through the V and the covers, which is the number one trait of any succesful opening batsman.

Every single time I have seen him playing a defensive stroke, he usually plays down the wrong line and has minimal foot movement. I have seen him beaten so many times.

I don't know about that, maybe we're seeing different Warners.

The only thing I do know is that we're not seeing a different ODI

What a crass batting performance. We better bowl out of our skins.

I agree with Hughes and Marsh, but why Smith out? He should definitely be part of Australia's long-term plans.

I guess Clarke should be out.

I heavily considered that but we're left without captains haha.

Hmm, at 20 he just seems too green for mine. As a bowler he'll concede 70 runs from his 10, and the two wickets he gets isn't worth it.

If he works on his economy then I agree he should be a long term option for us. Don't mind him as a batsman, but not in the last overs.

Hughes for sure. Better than Marsh. Can we afford two genuine opening batsman? Ponting/Clarke/Hussey/White cant stay together with none of them bowling.

Drop Wright and Bresnan, the bits n pieces players (7-0-57-0), and we might have a good ODI side. Bring in a proper batsman for Wright, maybe one who can bowl but not in the side for that, and bring in a (better) bowler for Bresnan. I also find with two (or more) bits n pieces players in the side the captain loses his way with allocations and ends up underusing (wicket-taking) bowlers. Sure we bowled the aussies out for 212 in 46 overs, but Broad would have been short of bowling his allocation, and it's been worse before

Yardy, Broad and Swann are more than capable batsmen, Collingwood can turn his arm over quite effectively, and we run the risk with only Strauss, Pietersen, Collingwood and Morgan of batting being understrength with only four specialist batsmen.

Spot on. Wright isn't overly great in either discipline and having an extra specialist batsman over him would definitely strengthen England. And yes, there is more than likely a better bowler than Bresnan out there.

Cameron White could captain.

Australia's bowling attack doesn't look bad to be honest, as most have been saying, the batting line up just isn't getting the runs. Although, I'm still not liking that a specialist bowler isn't being played at No.8.

Australia scored only 212 runs. It's pretty surprising. The ODI series is for the taking for England.

I reckon we should be grooming Steven Smith for the test side rather than play him in the ODI team. It's interesting to see how some young spinners are groomed for test places in limited overs teams and they end up just bowling darts which has a negative influence on their first class bowling style. This is especially true for leggies, who can get slogged it they flight it up in ODI's.

The best leggies didn't play ODI's. Look at Warne and Kumble. Qadir did and he averaged 32 in tests. Brad Hogg played ODI's and he couldn't make it at test level.

We'd be better off playing a Hauritz, Holland or Doherty in limited overs games than Smith, preserving Smith to play attacking roles in test matches.

Hmm, he just hasn't been a Best XI player for long enough IMHO.

I agree with the specialist bowler not being played at eight. Hilfy and Johnson to come back soon though.
