Story Australia's Commonwealth Bank Series - vs @ Perth: Ind: 119/5

Day 1 Ends

Well day 1 has come to a end here at the Gabba in Brisbane for the 1st Test Match between Australia and England in the 06/07 Ashes Series. Australia are at the end of play, 339 for 4 at this point of time. That is a massive score in just the 1 day for the Aussies. They really came out and gave the England bowlers a hammering. All 4 players for the Aussies have contributed well, ecspecially Ricky Ponting, but we will get to him a little later on. So Australia are 339 for 4 at the end of day 1. With Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke at the crease and with Adam Gilchrist and possibly Shane Warne, things are looking really dim for England. Gilchrist we know is a massive hitter and will knock the England bowlers around imensly. And Warne, well we dont know what Warney will do, one day he has a shocker, but another he can make 60 in minutes. It's going to be a interesting 2nd day here at the Gabba.

Players come off for a well earned rest

Let's go back to the start of the day when Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden were at the crease, It seems for ever ago, but it was just this morning that the pair were out the middle together ready to take on the England attack. Justin Langer was the 1st wicket to be take for the Poms ealry this morning. Justin Langer was the man to go, and he wasnt happy with himself for being the 1st and of course, going out so simply. Liam Plunkett was the bowler, Plunkett gave Langer the nice old yorker ball which just bounced in front of Langer's feet, Langer not moving his feet quick enough, tried to defend, but was jammed between the ball and the stumps. It was a good tatic from Plunkett which saw Langer gone for just 16, and good start for England

Matthew Hayden was the next man to go. After a huge partnership with Ricky Ponting, Hayden was the man to fall, to Matthew Hoggard. Hayden played a lazy shot in the end which saw the ball trail through from the bat, into the gloves of the keeper standing 5 metres behind. Matthew Hoggard was delighted he broke the partnership that started to kill them in the end. Matthew Hayden went for 35 which was a solid contribution to the teams result.

Damien Martyn was the next to be dismissed. He was dismissed from the good spin work from Ashley Giles, who at the end of the days play, was still bowling, so it wasn't that long ago that Giles took the wicket of Martyn. Martyn was caught LBW to be the 3rd victim of the England bowlers. While this had been happening, Ricky Ponting was fastly reaching his Century.

And the last but hopefully not least wicket for the Aussies was the great man himself Ricky Ponting. Punter made 108 for the Innings. Andrew Flintoff was the man who got the Captain and Michael Vaughan (the England Captain) caught Ricky Ponting just a few metres from where Ponting was standing. It was a sensational innings from Ricky Ponting, and he has really spurred his team on to follow his footsteps and really smashing the Poms this Ashes Series.

England's Bowling Attack

England in a bit of trouble here. They really need to knock Australia over quickly tomorrow and then post a big total.

Very nice work mate. Keep it up :)

Hussey and Clarke are both playing very good here. England are in some serious trouble if they can't dismiss these two quickly and get into the tail. Don't forget that Gilchrist is still to bat :)

Sign of serious trouble for England as Hussey is still there nearing his century. Brilliant knock from Punter he is in terrific form in this summer. England should pick quick wickets tomorrow morning but the task is difficult as Clarke is still there with Gilchrist to follow. Nice presentation :)

Clarke and Huss batting really well, this is a massive first day total by Australia, if they press on with it tomorrow and declare before lunch they will be in a really good position to win.

2nd day rocks off with a bang

The 2nd day of the Test Match at the Gabba has started off with a bang early. Michael Vaughan had not changed a thing to his field. Ashley Giles and Andrew Flintoff were still bowling just like they finished off with last night. You would think Vaughan might try a Plunkett or a Hoggard back into the attack, but he has kept his Spinner in for the time being. Ashley Giles had the 1st over, and he really troubled Michael Hussey who was nearing his century. Stangnent on 85 Hussey wanted to keep the scoreboard ticking and keeping his runs going so he could make his Century. It was a tight over from Giles which gave Hussey something to think about, only 2 runs came off the over, so another good over from Giles might be something the English were wanting from the spiner at the start of day 2.

Andrew Flintoff had the new ball at the other end of the pitch. Bowling to Michael Clarke who was 34 and still going strongly. Flintoff was bowling a tight line to Clarke, which was troubling the right hander. Clarke tried to play the simple way and just use the face of the bat to block Flintoff's speed, and try and take some speed of his ball's but Flintoff was to quick for Clarke and really troubled him early. While i said that, Clarke on the last ball of the over found a gap through Vaughan's field, which found it's way to the boundary, so all the confidence Flintoff found when he bowled to Clarke (and beat him) was all just thrown away with a brilliant shot from Clarke to the boundary for 4.

Clarke doesn't take long to get the scores running again

It was another tight over from Ashley Giles who ended up bowling to Michael Clarke for most of the over. He enjoyed bowling to a right hander, he kept him wondering what he was going to do next, and it was another good tight over from the spinner. Something that is happening that was missing from day 1, is that the England bowlers are starting to trouble and making the Australian batsmen "second guess" about what shot they are going to play. They are making the Australian's think in their minds during the course of play what shot they are going to play, or what type of stance they will be needing to produce the shot. That was missing from the English players/bowlers yesterday and it came as a price.

Andrew Flintoff had his way with Michael Hussey too. Hussey played a horrible shot during the over, which ended up seeing Hussey walking back to the pavillion being disgusted in himself. A poor shot, but the middle order player will learn from his mistake in the shot, and we know we wont see that again from the Left Handed Hussey. Andrew Flintoff was the bowler, and he had a little assistance from Liam Plunkett who took the catch of the important wicket of Hussey who finished on 88. Just shy of the century mark, he wouuld be kicking himself that he didn't try harder or last longer to become the 2nd man behind his Captain to make the Century mark in this Test Match.

The Hard hitting Adam Gilchrist is now at the crease for the Aussies. He will be looking to score quickly an score heavily. England need to get him out quick, before he unleashes the Hard hitting we all know he can produce.

Nice stuff, Hopefully Freddie can get his bunny and england will get a big score!!

Huss couldn't get his ton, that is shame. Gilly is going to carve them up here I reckon.

Tention between Australia and England building

Early in the 2nd day of the Test Match everything has been happening. You all remember day 1 which was dominated by the Australian batsmen, with Ponting and Hussey dominating the England bowlins attack making a solid 200+ between the 2 players. The first few overs of the 2nd day has been a little different. Hussey has already been dismissed for the 1st wicket of the afternoon, and now with the Hard hitting Gilchrist and the young Michael Clarke at the crease something was going to happen and happen quickly.

Unfortunately for the England side, that "thing" that happened wasnt a good thing, with Adam Gilchrist smashing a boundary from Stephen Harmison who was now back into the attack after a very long spell out of it. Harmison just wasn't pitching it right to Gilly. He went over the wicket, but put the ball to wide onto Gilly's strong side, and knowing the player Gilly is, he put all his power behind the bat and into the shot, which glided away to the boundary for his 2nd boundary of this over. It wasn't looking good for Harmison who just got back into the attack, he completely needs to change his style and his strengths of bowling to this wonderful One Day batsmen. Because if you pitch the ball just the slighest in Gilly's favour, he will dominate you every single time, and that's what he was doing to poor old Harmison early in the 2nd day.

Michael Clarke was still at the crease, currently sitting on 38 the young dinomo from Australia was starting to look settled. With his partner Michael Hussey now gone from the crease he started to struggle just a little bit. His partnership with Gilchrtist just isnt as strong as it was with Hussey, maybe because Gilly is new to the crease, but with the wicket of Hussey, had affects on Clarke aswell. Ashley Giles has been troubling alot of the batsmen going back to even Ricky Ponting. He has been bowling very well in this Test Match, day 1 he picked up a wicket, and now he has picked another. He completely shattered the stumps against Michael Clarke. Giles tried a full pitched ball, which Clarke couldnt encounter. He tried to step back and block the ball, but the length of the pitch Giles put on his bowl, didn't allow Clarke to step back and get his footing right so he could block the ball.
So Clarke had to try the block from where he stood, he completely missed the ball and in the end saw himself walking back to the pavillion making 38. He looked settled until the wicket of Hussey came about, since then Clarke struggled.
Giles was staggered to get his 2nd wicket of the Innings, and now will be looking for a 3rd. Shane Warne is the new man to the crease.

Michael Clarke goes on 38

clarkewicketcq2.jpg

With the wicket of Michael Clarke, Shane Warne is the new man to the crease. Something that alot of people we're looking forward to seeing was the tention between Ashley Giles and Shane Warne. Both great spinners for their countries, it was a rivialry just to be seen. The crowd got what they wanted to see, Ashley Giles and Shane Warne battling it out, Giles the left spinner for the English and Shane Warne, the right handed spinner for the Aussies, it was a battle to be seen, what will happen between these 2?

Spinner vs Spinner

spinnervspinnerjm0.jpg

While the tention between Giles and Warne was huge, the match must go on. But for the Aussies, the match that was going on, was starting to drop away. What i mean by that is Stephen Harmison picked up his 1st wicket of this Innings, picking up Adam Gilchrist. The Hard Hitting Gilchrist didn't get to show his talent around the Gabba, as Harmison took the better of Gilchrist, and trapped him. Complete PLUM was the call from the umpire, and he didnt have to think about raising his hand for out. Gilchrist gone for only 12, and Harmison picks up his 1st wicket after just coming back into the attack.

Adam Gilchrist gets trapped by Harmison

gilchristwicketqo1.jpg

With Gilchrist back in the pavillion, its Shane Warne and Australian quick, Brett Lee out at the crease now. So England have reached the Australian's tail end, so they will be looking to get these last 3 players out quickly, so they can start their charge on the Aussies 1st Test Score here at the Gabba. So stayed tuned folks, a good last few overs coming up here at the Gabba.

Australia ends 1st Innings

Australia's 1st Innings has come to an end here at the Gabba with the last 3 wickets being a easy task for the England bowling attack. Shane Warne was the 1st to go, Ashley Giles was the bowler, who took his 3rd wicket of the Innings, it was a good bowling display from the leg spinner. Shane Warne faced only 6 balls without making a run before he was bowled by Giles. Warne making a duck was dissapointed, but now would be pleased he can show his stuff at the Gabba with Australa beginning to bowl.

Shane Warne out for a duck

warnewicketht3.jpg

Brett Lee was the next to go. And this time it was Stephen Harmison that took his 3rd wicket of the match. Harmison pitched a shot ball to Brett Lee who went to take off from the back foot. His timing with his feet was on time, and ok, but the shot selection he played was all wrong. The ball ended up skimming the edge of the bat which was on the bottom of th bat. The ball directly went straight onto the stumps. So it was Lee's own fault that he went out. Playing a shot that made the ball come off the edge of the bat and knipping the stumps. Brett Lee was also gone for a duck, and now Nathan Bracken is new to the crease.

Lee follows Warne in going for a duck

leewicketfw1.jpg

So now that is all here at the Gabba, Australia are all out for 376. Stuart Clark was the last man out, who was well caught by Ian Bell and bowled by Stepehn Harmison. Clark got some runs on the board, only making 5 before he was dismissed for 5. So that's the end of the Australian Innings. It was a superb Innings from the Australian's with Ponting and Hussey making great progress to their score.

For the England side, Stephen Harmison and Ashley Giles picked up 3 wickets each. Andrew Flintoff picked up 2 and Liam Plunkett and Matthew Hoggard contributed with the solid 1 wicket.

Big total from Australia, good to see the English bowlers shared the wickets around.
Great pres mate!

good total by australia....and the england bwoling was also good.....the best part was everyone took wickets....good pres....keep up....waiting for england batting

Good batting by Australia but i think England have done well here by taking wickets at regular intervals and restricting Australia under 400. Nice presentation mate:)
