lol, how can you even bring Mendis into this. He was good when noone knowed how to play him but now he's nothing special, and not even the best Sri Lankan spinner.

Here we are for Day 4 of this great ashes test match between Australia and England. Australia have a strong lead and should win from here but you never know. They'll probably want another 50 runs before being bowled out but the English bowlers will be looking to take the final 2 wickets early on. Tremlett to start proceedings here today already having 4 wickets, bowling to Josh Hazlewood. His second ball was short and wide and Hazlewood had a slash at it which went wide of Pietersen in the gully and away for 4. He bounced back though next ball, a great yorker, Hazlewood not able to get anything on it and the leg stump went flying as Hazlewood was out for 19, a reasonable effort from the number 10 batsman and it was Chris Tremlett's first career test five wicket haul. Haddin tried to score some quick runs but he finally fell for 39, trapped in front by Tremlett to finish with figures of 6/75, a stunning bowling performance to give England a slight chance of pulling off what would be a stunning victory. Hussey was impeccable with the bat, guiding Australia to their nice total of 367, with Ferguson showing some promise scoring 56. Now it was up to the Aussie bowlers to bowl this English side out. They needed to bat through the tough new ball period though which would be taken by Bollinger to start with. It wouldn't be a pair for Strauss though as he hit a boundary late in the boundary to get off the mark. Alastair Cook didn't last a ball though as Hilfenhaus took the new ball from the other end and made it swing wildly, swinging in from the offstump and Cook played all around it, trapped in front and Cook knew it was out, not opting for a referral and Cook went back to the pavilion heads down, for a golden duck. Strauss and Trott battled through after that though, batting it out to go into lunch at 49/1, Strauss 29* while Trott was struggling along on 15*.
They continued to bat well after lunch but it was Hilfenhaus who broke the key partnership, taking his second wicket as Strauss just played at a wide one which nipped back in ever so slightly catching the inside edge onto the stumps and the skipper was out for 38. Hauritz was starting to find some turn though, getting one to turn sharply back into Trott which beat him completely hitting the off stump and Trott was out bowled for 41, after making 73 in the first innings. Bell didn't last long either as he was trapped in front by Hauritz for 4. He didn't think it was out though and reviewed the decision, hotspot showing a faint edge onto the pads so the decision was overturned and Bell survived. Australia were unable to take any more wickets during the middle session of the day, England going into tea at 136/3, Pietersen 35* while Bell was on 14*.
Pietersen's quickfire innings came to an end though, Hazlewood getting him plumb in front of the wickets and the finger was raised, Pietersen on his way for 48 coming off 59 balls. Hazlewood decided to try and bounce Collingwood out early in his innings but Collingwood was up to the task hooking him away for a six to get off the mark. Collingwood didn't look back after then, racing away to 38 off 46 balls before Bell brought up a deserved fifty. A huge appeal for a bat pad came off Hauritz's bowling and this time the decision was turned down. Katich was very certain it came off the shoulder of the bat and so he reviewed it and wasn't let down by hotspot as Hauritz had his second wicket, Bell out caught Katich, bowled Hauritz for 50. England like earlier lost 2 wickets in 2 overs as Collingwood played all around a straight ball from Bollinger and he was out for 42 off 55. Swann was on a king pair, and although he would have been happy to get off it when he survived his first ball, he was unable to get off a pair as he became Bollinger's second victim, bowled for a 6 ball duck this time and England were 242/7. Watson took his fifth wicket of the match with 2.1 overs left in the day, trapping Jimmy Anderson in front for 5. It was pretty much all over for England though as Hauritz struck the next over, getting the big wicket of Prior for 22 and Finn played out the final over to make Australia have to play into Day 5 although only needing 1 wicket, England 257/9 at stumps. Hauritz was great with the ball, taking 3/61, with the big wickets of Trott and Bell as well as Prior. All the bowlers bowled well though and now who would take the final wicket on the last day? Only rain could save the English. Here were the Aussie bowling figures before we leave.

The final day of this first Ashes test and the result is pretty much settled with Australia only needing one wicket to win the match. They'd be just looking to knock over Tremlett or Finn as soon as possible. England need another 180 runs to win so it seems very improbable that they will chase it down. Hauritz will start proceedings here today, looking for that final wicket. They nearly had the final wicket only 3 balls in when Hauritz got one to turn back in and Finn missed the ball playing across the line as it hit him on the pads. A huge appeal for LBW was turned down but Australia decided to review it and it was hitting the stumps but it got Finn just outside the line so the decision stood. Hazlewood, Watson and Bollinger got a go at taking the last wicket over the next few overs but Finn and Tremlett were enjoying themselves at the crease. Hauritz was brought back into the attack though and Tremlett made a huge swipe across the line late in the over but it went straight up and Haddin took the catch and Australia had won the first Ashes test, Tremlett out for a run a ball 17 as England were bowled out for 281, Australia winning by 155 runs.
Hussey's great century earnt him the MOTM award but all the bowlers did their job and the debutants didn't do too badly, with Ferguson making 28 and 56 while Hazlewood took 2/11 and 1/75. Tremlett was the pick of the English bowlers taking 2/23 in the first innings before ripping through Australia's batting lineup in the second innings with 6/75 and made handy contributions with the bat of 15 and 17 in the respective innings. All in all, England's batting was very poor with Trott the stand out players with 72 in the first innings and 41 in the second innings. Bell was the only other one to score a half century making an even fifty in the second innings. But that's it from us here today. That's a good win for Australia. Saw that coming from a mile away, although FInn and Tremlett did well to hang in their as long as they did.

Australia Wins Ashes Opener

In the Ashes opener, it was Australia who drew first blood with a comfortable victory over the English, winning by 155 runs. Hussey was dominant with the bat, taking the MOTM award for his 112 in Australia's second innings.
Khawaja continued his good form with a half century in Australia's first innings as they made 247, a score that didn't seem to be great. The English batters didn't do a good job, only Trott making a good score, scoring 72 as England were bowled out for 178, Watson the star with the ball with 4 wickets.
Australia's second innings was much better as they made 367, Hussey making a ton while Ferguson on debut made a solid fifty while Katich and Haddin both contributed with decent scores, while Tremlett starred with the ball taking 6 wickets. England were set a target of 437, an improbable chase on this pitch that seemed great for the bowlers.
A golden duck for Cook didn't help the English's cause and even though both Strauss and Trott made good starts, they couldn't go on and make a big score. Bell made the highest score with 50 while Pietersen scored 48 and Collingwood 42 but none could go on and make a big century as England were bowled out for 281, Hauritz taking 4/62 as well as Bollinger and Hilfenhaus taking 2 wickets each. Australia will likely go into the second test with no changes but the English might be wanting to make a few changes to reverse that result. Paul Collingwood's spot might be under fire after he scored 1 in England's first innings and took 1/48 and 1/63 with the ball even though he scored 42 in the second innings.
With the win in Brisbane and winning fairly comfortably, i won't expect Australia to make any changes to the side. They look fairly balanced. Never change a winning side is what i always say.
England on the other hand, they need to re-arrange their order or bring in some new talent. Strauss and Cook aren't working as a opening pair, while Trott has been the only batsman i would say who is in form. Collingwood, Pietersen and Bell need to find touch quickly, or their spots in the side might come under fire.
