I think this is a minor point but very important to note: Dhoni played without a third man for almost the entire series, and on these hard bouncy pitches, I can bet that the number of boundaries that went to third man from the Australian batsmen would be in the region of almost 200 runs aggregate or even more. That's a lot.
More generally, M.S.Dhoni as a captain is a failure in Test cricket. He is not a good reader of the game, unlike Sourav Ganguly, and his batting is contributing to his overall failure as a captain. He not only makes bad field placements but also has the wrong fielders in the specialist positions. Having fast bowlers man coverpoint and non-specialists like Kohli fielding at slips is just unforgivable.
I would back even Virender Sehwag as captain, but of course, his form isn't too hot either. But I think Sehwag has a better head on his shoulders for Test cricket, especially strategically. Sourav wasn't always batting like a giant when he was captain, but his captaincy was positive and aggressive.
Anyway, just wanted to vent on India's pathetic performance.
Isn't it amazing how the opposition always discovers and uncovers great talents when playing against the Indian team and how players making a career comeback always find it good to play against India in a series especially when India is playing away from home?
