Groups of death make teams stronger. They have to battle from the outset and don't have to pick up performance as much as other teams need to. In such a big tournament, rhythm is very important.

In fact the same could be said of club competitions like the UCL too, it's just that in recent years Barca and Bayern have been streets ahead of everyone else, and in any case were never in as easy groups as the English teams seem to get. The reason I bring this up is that this time around there is no Barca or Bayern of international teams. So getting a group of death could really be a blessing in disguise for a team if they can get out of the group.

the draw is happening now. could update this thread live but no, we don't do that sort of thing here.

update: ok, we'll do it a bit

Group A: Brazil, Cameroon, Mexico, Croatia

Group B: Spain, Chile, Australia, Netherlands

Group C: Colombia, Cote D'Ivoire, Japan, Greece

Group D: Uruguay, Italy, Costa Rica, England

Group E: Switzerland, Ecuador, Honduras, France

Group F: Argentina, Nigeria, Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Group G: Germany, Ghana, USA, Portugal

Group H: Belgium, Algeria, South Korea, Russia

England have got a bit of stinker afterall, costa rica are a pretty good third pot team to get but Italy are arguably the worst team in pot 2 to get, the pot where you should be getting an african team, most of which suck, or rubbish south american team. Brazil and Argentina have a stroll into the next round. France also must be delighted with how it's turned out for them given they were close to not even going.

Well England's group could have been worse. Uruguay are very weak defensively & struggled in the CONMEBOL qualifiers - so i'm not that scared of Uruguay as a S American team despite Suarez - compared to getting Chile, Colombia or Argentina. But it seems like getting out of that group could mean meeting brazil in the quarter-finals according to the ESPN Commentary.

It makes this friendly in March vs Denmark look kind of dumb now. Would prefer ENG to play another S American team, considering that group.

Spain have solid group.

World cup darkhorses, Belgium, Colombia & France have got fairly easy group i'd say.

Germany potentially have the group of death i think.

Argentina, :lol what a beauty of a group they have got.

yeah, it looks bad but colombia, argentina and brazil were also possible opponents and would have been a lot worse.

Germany v Portugal is the match to watch of the group stages I think, given ronaldo will almost certainly fire. it's a tough group but portugal and germany are far enough ahead of the others to make it straight forward,

colombia's group is interesting, colombia are not shoe ins for any match because they're defensively meh, and the other three teams will all fancy going through with them. I'd say it's the toughest group to call.
