Martyn asserts dominance
Damien Martyn has launched a late blitz on the New Zealand bowlers to tilt the match in Australias favour at lunch on Day 1. With Australia winning the toss and electing to bat on a pitch that wouldn't offer much to the bowlers, the Kiwis were always going to have their work cut out. But New Zealand did start off well, removing Justin Langer early, then the dangerous Ricky Ponting, both for just 14 runs. Matthew Hayden managed to keep scoring despite the losses around him, and then towards the end of the session Martyn began to pummel the bowlers to every corner of the stadium, leaving Australia well placed at lunch.

Australia 97/2
Hayden 32 (81)
Martyn 29 (26)

Last man out: Ponting 14 (25)

I think its well balanced at the moment. Australia are scoring at a good rate, but the Kiwiz have picked up two wickets. Looking forward to the next two sessions, should be interesting.

Just so everyone knows, it took as long as it did for the first session because its Exam time so I'm busy with that.

Kiwis slow Aussies, Hayden steadys
New Zealand have successfully slowed the Australian run-rate in the second session on the first day of the First Test, but only claimed one wicket in the second session. With Matthew Hayden still at the crease New Zealand have to be wary of his ability to explode at any given moment as well as new star Michael Clarke in the middle to. The bowlers have restricted the batsman ability to score, but need wickets as if these two are still together at stumps the run-rate will have undoubtedly improved. The game is still evenly balanced as we begin the final session.

Australia 3/174
Hayden 68 (161)
Clarke 15 (27)

Last man out: Martyn 49 (81)
