Commonwealth Bank Series Feb-Mar 2011/12

His gonna get out at 99. That's the closest he can get :rolleyes
Sad how people let the Lankans down. The Lankans themselves do it. They might be high on confidence not about the 43/10 or 3-2 series loss but they chased 300 twice against Proteas in their turf.

Pessimism is the only thing we got right now. Yes we improved a lot to chase 300 twice. But we don't have bowlers to win matches other than Malinga. Only hope is that Mahela becoming captain again would pull the team out of the hole and bring back that fighting spirit we used to have. Fingers crossed.

india should bring yadav in place of Ashwin and Irfan in place of Jadeja for next match at Perth. Raina deserves 1 more chance but if he fails again then India should look to give chance to Tiwary who scored 100 in his last International match.

True that.
Rahul Sharma is looking much better than Ashwin. Ashwin is horrible overseas.
India should look to play 3 seamers and 1 spinner. They have Raina as a part time spinner.
Sehwag and Sachin should open with Gambhir on No.3
The squad against the Aussies was a complete blunder. 3 Spinners in an Aussie pitch! :facepalm

Well, Sehwag in the interview has made it clear that only 2 out of Sachin,Sehwag, Gambhir will play and one will rest. They want a young middle order and they wont sacrifice if Sachin is playing.

Sehwag is playing tomorrow so Gambhir wont be playing and this thinking is bull ????

Tough luck as usual. Our ODI team is far better than what this performance suggests. It was bad luck coupled with some poor strategical decision taken by the Indian management. What was Dhoni and Fletcher thinking when they picked three spinners (to go with 2 other part time spinners)? Did they think MCG was a spinner's pitch? Did they even have a look at it? Dhoni says Irfan would have been another slower bowler in the 130's. Well thats definitely better than having a spinner bowl at 80-90kmph, right?? Ashwin must not have played today and Irfan or Yadav should have played. And Yadav already has been rested for 2 T20 games. Why does he need more rest? He is a young guy. Even if he goes for more runs, its fine. He can pick wickets.

The rain dampened things badly for us. Wet conditions, unhelpful for the spinners, with the medium pacers having exhausted their overs. But credit to Australia (and to the Hussey brothers for their extraordinary game). I am a big fan of Micheal Hussey (yes, I have seen him more favorably since him being a CSK guy:D) and he continues to impress me more.... He changed the game, and Wade and David Hussey basically went with that flow.

Hope India can recover against Sri Lanka and hope this weather stops following us and gives us enough full games to give us a chance of competing hard. And hope India get their selection right.

I agree with you, the ODI squad is much better and is capable of winning the series, it has been bad luck for the Indian team in the first match, nothing to take away from the Australians, but rain was the main obstacle for India, we had 3 spinners in our attack and they couldn't grip the ball properly, all our spinners went for too many runs which proved to be the difference.

Team selection is one thing which has to be a bit sensible, we need to play 3 pace bowlers to make full use of the bowling conditions and also to avoid giving away too many runs in the death overs which has been a problem for India in the ODIs from quite a long. I don't think anyone out of Ashwin or Rahul Sharma should be dropped, we should persist with them, they have good variations and can be very useful in the middle overs if we get a full 50 overs game.
Irfan should replace Jadeja to strengthen the bowling lineup. Zaheer(if fit) can come in place of Vinay Kumar. Raina needs a few more chances, he is an impact player and can score a few quick runs for the team whenever required.

My XI for the next game would be

Sachin
Sehwag/Gambhir
Kohli
Rohit
Raina
Dhoni
Irfan
Praveen
Ashwin
Rahul Sharma
Zaheer(if fit)/Vinay Kumar.

Sounds like playing Sachin is the sacrifice. On one hand they're trying to build experience, while on the other sacrificing that so the retired Sachin can attempt to reach a personal milestone :rolleyes

I think India is having a good strategy here. They are currently doing the right thing by giving opportunity to all the youngsters. See this is the thing, the next world cup is in Australia/NZ and I am pretty sure that Sehwag and Sachin won't be there by the time of WC. So we have to keep rotating players in order to give them enough experience of this kind of wickets which are completely different than home conditions otherwise they will struggle in the future. So I like the approach of team management of rotating senior players like Sehwag and Sachin (even though this might be the last ODI series for Sachin) and giving full time to youngsters to settle down. Although I don't like that they are also trying to rotate Gambhir when he can be there for next WC and that guy is a fighter who will play in any sort of conditions once he has a good look of pitch.

So the team should be:
Sehwag/Sachin
Gambhir
Kohli
Rohit
Raina
Dhoni
Jadeja
Irfan
Ashwin/Rahul
PK
Zak/Umesh.

Keep rotating players like Sehwag, Sachin and Zaheer and add players like Yuvraj Singh, Vinay Kumar and Varun Aaron and others.

Mr. Gavaskar however is not liking this rotation system. :

Use Sachin's experience right now and also give the youngsters a good taste of the next World Cup conditions (which is also tough conditions for subcontinent batsmen). Dont see anything wrong in it. Good that they are rotating only among the senior batsmen and not sacrificing a young player. This means Rohit Sharma, Raina and the likes are expected to get decent run. They can also rest Kohli for a game (he is now a senior pro in ODI's) and give Tiwary a chance. Kohli has played all four tests, both T20's and now the first ODI.

It'll be hard for SL to make any impact in the first game so i think India should defeat them comfortably as they are now more aware of Conditions there

Hope India get their selection right at least today. It would be very hard and probably even more ridiculous to see three spinners (not including the part timers) playing on a Perth wicket. If Yadav is fit, bring in Yadav for Ashwin and Sehwag for Gambhir (as hinted by Sehwag). In fact, I would go one step further and bring in Irfan too for Jadeja and play 4 seamers + 1 spinner in Perth.
