It must be because 'NZ always raise their game against Australia/NZ have a good record against Australia/NZ give Australia a good run for their money/some other fallacious summary of AUS/NZ contests'.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Aussies drop a game or two, its one day cricket, where a 10 over period of poor batting can cost you the match. If anything, I reckon Australia's ODI record is more impressive then their Test record. Not in terms of importance, but simply because the better side usually prevails in Tests because there is adequate time to recover from a bit of bad luck/poor play, and in ODI's it's really anyones game on the day.
As for the Australian ODI summer, why not bring back the Aus A team into the fold. That summer of 94/95 (I think it was, between Aus, Aus A, Zim, Eng) where Aus faced Aus A in the final was a cracker. Why was it a one off? Does it screw with the future tours program or something? Surely you could just have each of the four teams play each other one or two times less. I'm sure the Aussie public would want to see the next tier of guys, it should help crowds, ratings etc. And those 94/95 games were fiercely contested, a couple decided in the final over if I remember correctly. They could field a fairly decent A squad that should give all of the teams a run for their money, and what better way for prospective Australian players to prepare for the big time then... playing in the big time, against the best side in the world and the best the world has to offer. Something like...
Hayden (assuming Watson gets the nod)
Jacques
Hodge
North
Voges
Haddin
Hopes
Hogg (Aus bowling I assume is Lee,McGrath,Bracken,Clark)
Johnson
Hilfenhaus
