Commonwealth Bank Series

Voges has scored slightly more runs but SR is less than Hodge this season so if it was a case of form Voges is just in front. Must be the experience he has plus there is still probably one batsmen spot open (Hayden/Watson one).

Hodge's experience will certainly help them in there campaign. Selectors probably thinking about getting the most out of the team.

bah if ponting is rested at perth i will cry... he did that last year, what a joke!

hit him on his right side of his ribs and the chest protectors cover your left.
Well at least he wont be resting on Australia Day, i didn't have a problem with that last year but it caused a lot of drama

odd comment from a Victorian but i agree.

Voges or Cosgrove would've been a better option.
cosgrove needs to get his ass into shape before they select him it was a mistake letting him play being unfit as he is/was. Voges or even north may of been alot better option, i get the feeling they picked him because he bats 3 not for his age or talent. might of forgotten that north bats 3!

Well if Ponting gets a rest, surely Gilchrist deserves one as well. Not this game of course, wait until Ponting come back, but that would be their chance to groom Hussey for the emergency keeper role.

Hodge is an interesting choice, but a reasonable one. As I see it there are probably 4 or 5 guys who have batted best in both forms of cricket this season. That is usually important to the selectors. You've probably got:
1. B.Hodge - The man who was picked
2. D.Lehmann - Too old
3. B.Haddin - Hasn't really got respect as a good batsmen yet, but his record in the last 3 seasons is quite good. He's good enough to go to WC as reserve batsmen and keeper I reckon.
4. M.North - Must be close, but if they're being picky they didn't want another leftie at #3
5. A.Voges - Has perhaps scored a little less than the guys I've already listed but still in good form and made the Test squad. If I'm a selector I'm giving him a go just to try him out. We pretty much know how good Hodge is already. But...they probably wanted a #3 for an easy swap with Ponting so I can't argue too much.

It will be good to see Joyce is his natural position, but he's going to be coming in at a tricky situation for my liking. He'll either come in with us 40-2 after 15, or about 150-2 after 40 overs. We don't have players who can force the tempo. One area where we could do that with a low risk, would be either the Wicketkeeper or one of the lesser bowlers.

Prior or even Jones could up the tempo batting at say 3 if needed, yet we have Nixon, who is only going to get a lot against spin bowlers and then only in the middle overs. The other problem is the 4th bowler is Dalrymple. Another player who likes to take his time to score his runs, now he's good at it for Middlesex at 6 or 7, but at 8 in this England side, he's there for a collapse basically. We need Flintoff to click to stand a chance, or perhaps one of Collingwood, Strauss or Joyce to be approaching a century during the slogging overs. I can't see it happening to be honest.

Just a point on NZ, they would be a World Class side if they sorted out their lower order. It's great having 5 specialist bowlers, but having Vettori and Franklin at 7 and 8 is risky, whereas at 8 and 9 it's strong. One player out from a World Class side in my view, the good news for New Zealand is that those players are Styris and/or Oram.

5th bowler surely?

Lewis, Anderson, Flintoff, Panesar and then JD.

JD should bat above Nixon too imo.

Yea Bro , U r right. KP Is becaming Overconfident day By day.

HA!

England critics are being gay saying 'Oh no we only have one six hitter left in Freddie'

and they say Australia have Gilly, Symonds etc but if my memory serves me right dont Australias normal none smashers hit 6's likes of Ponting normal batsman doesnt try to slog more than he plays cricket shots but I have seen him his some wonderful six's M.Clarke can hit 6's Hussey can hit 6's.

So wtf is this that we dont have the man power uh yes you do because Im sure our lot can hit 6's to I mean say KP and Freddie do his 6's its not like its going to help by two people doing it now is it everyone has to go for it in a ODI i dont see the point of these excuses?

Btw, World Champions yes KP is overconfident..................as he should be he's not like that turd Faisal Iqbal who trys to be all cheeky and stuff but then goes out in the middle and makes like 4 runs KP scores runs and big runs ;)

I was listening to the radio a couple of weeks ago with Cox and Flemming and they reckon that "undecided" opening position has already been decided for the World Cup, so I say that Hayden would have it (hopefully).

I hope not as Hayden has by no means said "don't drop me" with his form. It's been Gilly that has made their opening partnership look so great.

On Haddin hes more than proved himself as a batsmen this season, one of the top FRC batsmen but can he actually field if needed to play as a batsmen one?

No news from the ground yet I'm afraid, but conditions in the office are decidedly gloomy and humid; neither the lights or air conditioning are working and, as for the pitch, it needs hoovering.

Let's hope the real conditions are a little better.

Some light humour from Will Luke from CricInfo.

Ross Taylor is fit.
I like the way he played th Australians the other day.
Lets see how he goes here.
Astle is the danger man for New Zealand, he can get New Zealand a big total on this pitch batting first.

Sweet 6er by McCullum over cover from the 2nd ball of the innings. It looked like it would be a big edge to 3rd man, but he smashed it.
