REPORT
In the first innings of this match Essex were bowled out for 147 and are now on the backfoot. Not one person made a half century with the closest man being Alistair Cook who made 45. The stars from the Gloucestershire point of view were the captain Jon Lewis who had figures of 4-41 and Neil Killeen who got 3-41. Both of these bowlers as well as being assisted by Gidman and Hodnett with Averis proved a handful for the Essex batsmen. Gloucestershire will now look to buil a healthy first innings lead and win this division two match.
REPORT:
Gloucestershire responded to the efforts of Essex with the bat by playing really well. They eventually declared on 458/3 and the new boys De Villers and Harmison both made a century. De Villiers was aggressive from the start where as Ben Harmison played more conservatively and did the job for Gloucestershire. This can be seen by looking at their wagon wheels. De Villiers hit a lot down the ground and punished length where as Harmison punished anything which was wide.
As for the Essex bowlers they all found it really hard with Gough managing one wicket for a massive 132 runs and Andy Bichel getting two for 104. The other bowlers failed to pose much of a problem for the Gloucestershire batsmen.
REPORT:
Essex trailed by 311 runs going into their second innings and that was always going to be hard to get on the third and fourth day as the pitch was more worn. The spinners would no doubt come into play and help the seamers. Once again Essex failed with the bat and could only make 207 all out. However one man really did stand out and that man was Andy Flower who played patiently for an unbeaten 86. Unfortunately no one could tay with him for a long enough period of time.
As for the Gloucestershire bowlers they were very impressive again. Jon Lewis led by exampkle again and this time took 4-52. Hodnett bowled really well for his three wickets and Alex Gidman also chipped in. It completed a comfortable victory for Gloucestershire who came into the match as the underdogs but andled the conditions far better than their opponents.
The man of the match award unsurprisingly went to teh captain of Gloucestershire Jon Lewis who managed to take eight wickets in the match with figures of 8-93. This was a great performance which helped the team get the win and top the table after the opening fixture. Will Gloucestershire be a team to watch this season after their impressive victory against Essex?
