Cricket 19 General Discussion

Yeah, that's been an issue since DBC 14 lol. Big Ant definitely worked on batting and bowling AI but seems like they just didn't have time for fielding AI. Although I will say this game has the best slip fielding compared to previous games.

The surprising thing is that I thought the AI field changes were at least somewhat reasonable in Ashes...its taken a step back in Cricket 19 where the AI mostly does not respond to your scoring, and the rare times that it does, it makes some irrelevant changes.

And from a programming standpoint, I don't see why this is so hard to get right (compared to say batting according to the match situation which seems like a much harder problem).. For fielding changes, the AI can easily make short term changes (every few balls) by looking at recent scoring history, medium term changes (say every few overs) by looking at the players scoring charts and plugging the big scoring areas, and long term changes by looking at players scoring charts across matches and changing the preset fields accordingly. All the information is there to make these decisions.

I know this is very unlikely to happen but given BA's investment in motion capture equipment, it would be nice if they had different animations for lower order batters (and club players) so that their stroke-play wasn't as finessed as top-order internationals. It is not just about changing mentality but there should be more of a chance for poorer batters to make the wrong decision (come forward to a rising delivery, stay back to a good length ball, not get their bat out of the way of a bouncer, play all round a yorker, leave a ball on length or line that hits the stumps etc.). At the moment, although they may get out, it looks exactly the same as any top-order dismissal. As such, I don't find bowling to tail-enders feels much different to any other batter. Others may have a different experience. I've played mainly career mode with only one foray into an Ashes series.

A true “judgment” stat is missing. I dunno if this still the same but i recall from my time in Beta in effect the AI know exactly where a ball will go. Any "mistake" is a result of a calculation based on bowler quality & ball quality vs batter quality. But e.g. the AI batsman will never leave one going on to hit the stumps, because they know if it will perfectly, even if they're a number 11 and all batting stats were 0.

You may remember DBC14 they would only ever middle or miss, and could leave a ball an inch outside off stump (usually by stepping outside leg, which always annoyed the bejesus out of me).

I'd like a judgment that effectively added a larger or smaller (based on quality) "zone of doubt" on line/length/height for the AI so they might leave the wrong one, get their footwork wrong etc, depending on judgement and overall ability. the line variation might be very small, but the length/height variation could be a little bigger.

I guess though the hardware might make a real-time calculation of 2 different ball paths (real & AI judged) and the outcome difficult, but if it was possible i think this would be a superior mechanic

@WealeyH @blockerdave @Dutch

I'm interested to see if someone could AI vs AI a load of cricket (I can as well).

Everything standard, veteran skill level, 80 and 70 bowling speeds, medium pitches or softer.

Disprove some of my theories.

- That batting mentality doesn't matter at all (It's the skill that dictates whether batsman smash it around).

- That you will never ever get a ring or outfield catch in a test match (unless your name is @blockerdave)

- That in the last ten overs of an ODI, if the batting team are in a reasonable position the ball will be absolutely smashed around the park regardless of if Chris Martin or Sachin Tendulkar are batting.

I am happy to create a thread and post my matches, but I feel like it is proved already.

And for those of you saying, "Why don't you bowl?" Well, I do, and I find the same things happen. It would also take forever to do. There arent two separate AI batting engines at work here...

I work from home often, even in non-lockdown times, so being able to actually watch cricket in the background that is authentic and sim matches is something I've been trying to get right for many hours, especially as now there is no real cricket on. I also think that people who have been hand crafting and spending many hundreds of hours on these awesome teams, apart from the visuals, have been totally wasting their time getting the attributes right.

I am happy to track findings on a spreadsheet, and I also have cricket stat tracking software at my disposal.

unless I’m losing the plot... mentalities 100% are there. The more aggressive they are the more likely they will dispatch a bad ball. In both my 98 tests. Gibbs went along like a rocket while Kirsten knocked it About! I used to always struggle to tie down Warner as well!

BA have repeatedly said though that AI v AI gives different results. So whether that’s true or not I don’t know but it’s the least likely representation of the game that id trust.

yeah I’d say it’s definitely there.

perks have a lot of weighting too - you can set a player as conservative or precise but if you give them power hitter, slogger, good shot maker and entertainer perks, they’ll play more like Botham than Boycott.

quality of batsman and bowler matters too - put simply a good but defensive batsman will score more quickly than a lower rated more aggressive batsman - they will see more that’s “in their area” as it were and go after that. Equally if they’re bowled pies they’ll put em away - I’m pretty sure Boycott would look pretty attacking if I was bowling to him!!

The added early confidence perk is also a big one for someone like a Smith of Virat.. couple of decent shots and they will be fully barred up in no time!

Searched but couldn't find a definite answer for this - is there anyway to have the PS buttons show instead of Xbox buttons when using PS4 controller on PC?

what player settings affect how the AI run?

i have NEVER seen the AI run like this Aussie team run. they are so aggressive, running when hit to a fielder, and i've just had 3 absurd run outs in less than 20 overs. It's never happened before - must be an attribute of the players rather than other settings, which i've not changed @MattW ?

Even when batting, it feels like tailenders are top order batsmen. Sometimes I even feel I play more crisp shots with a NO 10 or 11 then a top order batsman.

I had an interesting match and was wondering if DL was bugged.

Australia batting, halfway through their innings had their overs reduced to 31 a side. They ended up scoring 161 all out.

Bangladesh, having 31 overs to hit 161 won the game.

My question is, because Australia didn't know that they only had 31 overs to bat midway through their innings, wouldn't that have meant Bangladesh would have needed to hit more than 161 to win? If so, the game didn't take this into account.

was that short cover?
I believe it was. It was second ball of the match, I hadn't even thought about the field just threw down some crazy slider settings and had a couple of looseners with Bumrah.

Two things to note. That was a good length delivery that barely got above ankle height. And I don't know if it comes across in the video that well but I'm pretty sure it was a big thud off the pad (I appealed even before I realised I had a short cover) before hitting the bat.

All that being said. Going for some extreme settings with the ball friction/bounce settings produced, possibly, my most enjoyable bowling and batting experience yet.

There were issues; too many boundaries; AI was scoring at 4.5 and I was finding it easy when I'm crap at batting. For the AI; the ones or twos the AI would usually get went for four instead. So it's possible it could be countered by reducing the run rate slider. There was some really interesting ball movements and deliveries, maybe even shots I have not seen much of. Most surprising; the fielding barely registered as an issue for me, when I usually struggle to make it through a T20 without feeling completely dejected. There were no byes for four even though I was inching the bounce up to the similar levels where I had bowled several in my last play around.

BIG CAVEAT. I have had a drink. And my skill level in games goes up 25% when I have. :thumbs :spy

There was some really nice dismissals too.
