If there's no DRS why wouldn't you want fielding team to know batsman nicked the ball? This only makes sense in case there's DRS and the fielding team will need to take a risk and make a decision whether to go for the DRS review or not.
You wouldn't want the fielding side to know whether the batsman has nicked the ball or not for we have manual appealing. There could be a scenario wherein the batsman nicks it, the bowling side doesn't pick that up and make a half hearted appeal, and the umpire turns down the appeal.
But then, there could be DRS. This is just one reason why they wouldn't want the bowling side to know if the batsman has nicked the ball.
