Cricket Academy questions

Couldn't you just add some form of optional visual indicator - or will the audio help in that case?

Some sort of ball-brushing-the-pad sound or ball-nicking-the-bat sound so we know what really happened no matter what decision the umpire gives.

Don't think there should be a visual indicator else your opponent (if you are playing multi-player) will get to know for certain whether you nicked it. The whole idea behind this feature seems to be that you as a batsman know whether you hit it or not but leave enough uncertainty for the opponent for him/her to decide whether to appeal or not. And this is what will bring DRS in the picture. If you know you didn't nick it and is given out, you can go to DRS. Similarly the opponent can go to DRS if he/she is sufficiently convinced you hit it. If there's a visual indicator or a way for everyone to see, the DRS system will lose its impact.

The good news is that now folks will need to be careful about appeals and DRS. If they waste their DRS reviews on line decisions they will only have themselves to blame when a "clear" dismissal goes against them and they can't do much about it. Same with batting side for LBWs. For edges they will know for sure but LBWs will be different and batsmen will have to be careful when to go to DRS. I hope there's a system built in that you can't replay a delivery till the DRS "go or no-go" decision time has elapsed else folks will simply pause the game, watch numerous replays and then decide to go to DRS or not. All in all a nice addition to the gameplay :thumbs

If you're playing on the keyboard you're likely to be playing single player - the controllers without rumble case would be about the only time where you'd have to hide the visual indicator and have no supplement.

One keyboard and one controller seems an awful way to play a PC game imo.

If this is the case then it would be amazing and create realistic gameplay situations.

The idea is that the batsman knows if he snicked it or not - we don't want the fielding side to absolutely know.

Afterwards the replays will clearly show what happened.

And the commentators would comment on it too?
Are the run-out appeals manual too? I don't want to see the wk pulling off the bails everytime either. You know batsman sprint when its a close call, otherwise he jogs and the wk goes about his business too.

But you can't discount the possibility of folks who like to play multi-player on the same PC. I remember I used to do that with my friends in school days :) If the game supports multi-player on the same PC, which most games do, you have to design it accordingly.

If this is the case then it would be amazing and create realistic gameplay situations.

That's what I read between the lines. Else why have DRS at all? I mean if it's clear to both sides what the outcome was (out or not-out) why even bother with the DRS? It would simply add more button mashing and slow down the gameplay without providing any value add.

I am sure lines like "That looked awfully close", "he might've edged it", "that looked like it may have shaved the edge" etc. would play to the uncertainty theme.

Ross, after playing your AFL game non-stop after it came out, I am seriously looking forward to this game. From what you have revealed, this game has unreal potential, unlike any cricket game to date. Just a couple of things mate (which may have been answered. If so, I'm sorry.) -
1) Who are the commentators? For me, commentators are one of the most important things, apart from game play. I hope there are more then 2 or 3 because with previous games, they get stale and I either eventually mute it (which wrecks the atmosphere of it) or I just stop playing because it frustrates me too much.
2) Presentation-Wise. Are there things like hot-spot, snicko ect. It probably isn't important for most people but I feel every little bit that is like what I watch on T.V., the more lifelike and relate able I find it.

Just out of curiosity is the game you are talking about RLL2 or is at some other game?

There is a manual appeal system - appeals must be raised for some decisions or the umpire will not give the wicket.

Thats great. First game to do so after cricket 97. It used to be my favorite feature of that game. I hope the PR team does not get pissed at you for telling us all these stuffs about the game:p. Hopefully there are lot more surprises when you officially announce the game features (and there should be more exciting features given we hardly know anything about batting and fielding).

He is the CEO. :spy

The PR team are more likely to get pissed at the CEO than anyone else as they have less control ;)
Used to love manual appeal in C97!

I imagine he is speaking about the Australian rules football game that Big Ant brought out some time ago.

Great! That means Big Ant has a stellar track record as far as sports based games are concerned. First AFL/Australian Rules Football followed by RLL2 and both were deemed good by hard core fans of the sport. I wish cricket completes the trilogy and continues the trend :yes

What kind of clue would the bowling side will have with regards to faint edges?

Will there be a very faint sound or a very small deflection of any sort? Coz on field players can hear or see faint edges almost 90% of the time.

There is a full physics system for the bat/ball, it will change it's line but that might be really slight for small edges.

You will always get noise from an edge, very small and slight but with noise from the crowd, foot movement, etc.. it could just be in your head too, just like the real thing where you swear it was an edge :)

This is very true :D

The guys on the team that work on it are the ones who groan the most, especially in the case with this game as we have direct competition and they don't like the idea that we may be copied, however, I have little fear of that because for us both to make our release dates we both have to be feature complete and finished around about now ;)

Thanks for your support with AFL Live, really appreciate it. AFL is the hardest game we have ever made. (One I love though - go BLUES! :) )

Regarding 1, that will be announced later.

Regarding 2, we are trying to make it as TV like in it's presentation as possible.

Hi Mods :)
It would probably be good if this thread could be split to somewhere more appropriate if possible?
