DBC14 Modification Discussion

Just hoping that @BigAntStudios can implement the PES modded option file method they've mentioned for consoles. I'd love for that level of content to be editable for consoles. At least roster updates are easy enough now too due to CA. I'd be happy for kits, logos, bats and stumps/pitchads to be easily portable although PC will be the place to be and I think megapatches would be the best way to get the mods on consoles

To Big Ant,

What are your thoughts on mods that are not just cosmetic? Do you think it'd be possible to mod the AI at all? Perhaps the batting and bowling too.

For example, right now it's fairly difficult to hit balls through mid wicket on the front foot. The smart people here might be able to modify the angles of shots, as a function of timing, to make such shots a bit more common.

Another example would be modding the AI bowlers to bowl a bit more off-side.

How accessible do you think your file structure is for things like that? The EA games were fairly easy, and the brainiacs here nutted them out very quickly. The Codemasters games, however, I don't think received any AI patches?

There wasn't much inherently easier about EA's structures - just that they copied them over from other more popular games (which meant better developed editing tools) and kept them for multiple versions - which meant we weren't starting from scratch each time like we were on working with the Codemasters games.

Thanks for that info

I just remember the EA games have text files with parameters that you could change to tweak the AI no?

Big Ant has a good history with modding, e.g. helping some RLL 2 mods and here opening up the graphics to be easily modded. I don't think it's ever gone as far as AI modding.

I hope that they aren't constrained in this regard by things like leaderboards. I hope there isn't a line of thought of "if people can mod the AI then nothing is stopping them from cheating and then being able to rise up the leaderboard". Perhaps that'd be the case on consoles with the Microsoft and Sony restrictions, but not PC?

I don't THINK BA would be like this, however I think that leaderboards and achievements led to the poor design decision of a career mode with locked difficulty levels and batting/bowling assists. Luckily that's being removed in this patch though, which I think speaks volumes for BA's character: They made a design decision, people reacted negatively, and instead of being stubborn and sticking to it, they've changed it to what people want :)

Finally, in the end it may not matter how much or little BA try to prevent the AI from being tampered with. I'd be surprised if there weren't people here with the ability to find ways around it :)

Yeah, and I would imagine all implementations of AI essentially come down to that.

AC09 actually had a great web interface for AI tweaks that they used internally - when we were doing the internal alpha for the beta patches that came out, those builds opened that up for us to try out different values, which modified gameplay on the fly.

Still - just about every cricket game has been edited, so if Big Ant don't support it officially, I'm sure someone on here will work out the file formats.

Yes if interested one obvious person comes to my mind but still hoping BA assist with AI eventually

me too, cause it will greatly increase replayabilty also catering to different tastes.I would prefer most gameplay stuff opened up to tweak.

The only hurdles i see in them opening up gameplay configs are:
1.Leaderboard getting messed up, people can make stupid AI,super powered strokes etc and exploit.
2. Online, i dont know how it will work out if two player have different sets gameplay configs.

Solution:
probably add a sandbox mode for gameplay mods so that when they are used leader board points and online arent possible.

Wow these look great. Does anyone know if post patch you will be able to edit your players kit etc? I imagine a few people will be wanting to change their bats a few times without starting a new career. I will keep everything crossed these somehow make it to console. I would totally pay money for that as dlc.

Will it ever be possible to access these mods via the console versions of the game ? Failing that a flexible editing tool for kits logos and bats etc would be good as part of patch 3

Got a lot if mod related stuff to consider it seems. Especially with potential console modding?

flame me if you must as I know it will have been covered in the last 11 pages, but how much of this content going to be available to the console games? I presume we can't get the textures, but the custom kits, bats and the like? will they be available in the academy?

Nothing is able to be able to imported into the console version as of now it is PC only.

We may be able to do something in future and will do our best to make it work for console too.

After looking at those awesome kits...Surely would want those kits to be used by console gamers as well...:yes:thumbs

@shrenik :Awesome work...:clap

i think we all do mate, hope for patch 3/4 but to be honest don't reckon BA will do this until DB15 as they wont want to hurt PC sales, bummer though as i have a crap PC!
