DBC14 Modification Discussion

I wouldn't delay/pull gameplay related patch which fixes bugs due to adding content which has no bearing on gameplay. First priority has to be fix bugs and then look at adding additional content.

Delaying a patch which fixes online gameplay issues, cr@ppy AI batting, bowler fatigue/stamina issue, AI's non-sensical field settings etc. just so that folks can play with a new bat (which you can't even see all that much in the game) doesn't make much sense.

I fully agree.

Being totally honest, I'm probably not going to play the game again until the patch is available. That is partially a function of upcoming exams though, and a cricket game isn't great for a quick 20 minute break. It tends to suck you in :)

On PC perhaps... Which (historically in Cricket games) accounts for a tiny *tiny* percentage of revenue.
Console is a different story: I'd think very carefully about anything that risked my less core audience not coming back every time.

Based on your argument CA already does that with new players. The point surely is that future versions have to do more than go down the EA (and sorry Codemasters) route of updating the rosters and using a new graphics engine.
If DB21 has exactly the same features and gameplay as DB14 then people shouldn't be shelling out money for it.
DB14 is an excellent first step but people will still pay for new versions if they have more depth in career mode etc, better situational AI, more stadiums, fewer bugs etc.

And would add improvement graphics wise as well...Because the versions will be released may be after a gap of year and a half each so you would expect that for sure...:)

Intelligent post is intelligent.

Furthermore, BA evidently spent a heap of time and resources on making Cricket Academy.

For example, Cricket Academy is by far the most comprehensive editor ever seen on a sporting game. Maybe the graphics aren't quite as good as other games but given the sharing platform and wealth of features, I'd still say it's #1 .

On the other hand, the career mode is probably one of the most shallow in any sporting games, particularly due to the teams never changing over 20 years.

I can't think of many other games where the editor is orders of magnitude more sophisticated than the main-selling game mode.

HOWEVER.... CA is practically done. It will get minor improvements over time, some being non-BA mods, but the amount of effort needed from now on is much less than the effort needed to get it up and running.

This means that for Bradman 15 and beyond, the time that was first spent on CA can now be spent on gameplay :)

The same goes for the users, as (I hope) the Bradman 14 database will be available for future games.

Well, clearly I wouldn't have done CA either. :)

For me, Cricket games only work commercially based on an "revolution/evolution/revolution/evolution" cycle. This is just the business reality of it: The sort of numbers a cricket game generally does demands that. The only question is how long you leave between versions.

"Evolution" in that is not just the exact same features and gameplay: it's a whole bunch of polish and improved experience, with a couple of new features. "Revolution" is basically a new engine or *significant* scope change. The updated rosters/equipment are a part of that (either in a new version, or DLC) and *could* be the thing that makes the potential buyer's decision. IC 10 sales were not too far behind AC09s because of this. If we had a full editor in there (by which I mean a system where one click updates all of that), I don't know if that would be the case.

The first game will always cost a lot because you're building everything: the second is where you hope to clear even because they are so much cheaper to make. If you don't make it there with the second, can you even justify making the third?

Wow, some great works there. Awesome work Ross, you are the men.
This thread should be sticky? 5 pages in a matter of hours

After further thinking about the wider audience that won't mod, the console version will have to wait for patch#3 for mods (*if* indeed we can do them at all, which while seeming likely, isn't 100%).

We've got plenty in mind for the sequel that will have you wanting to buy it :)

Fine waiting for patch 3. Would rather a decent game than a game with kits. Would using a USB only overwrite graphics or would rosters be likely to be affected?

At this time it's graphics, we will see about other things over time.

Phew. Don't fancy losing my rosters. Suppose I could upload to servers etc. Prospect of this looks great.
