Cusden Gets His Second As Derbyshire Take Hold

Derbyshire have put themselves in a commanding position early on in this match, they are eating their way through the middle order at an alarming rate and Surrey really need to get a grip (pardon the pun :)) if they are to post any sort of challenging total for Derbyshire to conquer. Simon Cusden picked up the latest wicket to boast impressive figures of 2/12 from 5 overs. John Batty was well beaten for pace here by some really clever bowing by Cusden. He had been floating in some medium pace outswingers to temp Batty into the drive and then pushed one through a fair bit quicker and got it to swing back into the batsmen. Before Batty could even register what the ball was doing it had clattered into his middle stump leaving it loose in the ground. The elation was clear to see in the face of the Derbyshire captain who couldnt have wished for a better start to the campaign!

Rankin Teams Up With Pipe Again And Surrey Are Dissappearing Without A Trace

The boys are really fired up out there in the field and it really shows in the bowling performance, hostile and accurate, pace and seam, its all going right for them today. Boyd Rankin, probably the most fired up out of the lot after breaking into the first team today is really taking it to the batsmen. He picked up another wicket to make three altogether today when he slammed in a short one that caught Nicholson off guard, he was in two mind whether to play the hook or not and in the end he tickled it of the top edge straight into the waiting gloves of Jamie Pipe behind the stumps. Rankin and Cusden are keeping it tight and Derbyshire and in the wickets here at the County Ground.

Spin Plays A Part As Botha Gets In On The Action

Ant Botha added his name to the list of wicket takers with the crucial wicket of Ali Brown, most probrably Surreys only hope of getting something out of this poor innings. Getting some good drift bowling over the wicket, the slow left armer switched to around the wicket and troubled Brown with some deliveries that ripped, uncharacteristicly for this pitch, past the edge of the bat. The one that did for Brown though was an absolute peach. Bowling over the wicket, it pitched on leg and gripped meaning that Brown was through the shot too early and the expansive drive he attempted left a huge gap for the ball to sail through and hit middle stump. With just the tail left and Derbyshires bowlers showing no signs of letting up their relentless attack just how long can Surreys final few batsmen hold out?

Boyd Rips Apart The Tail

Boyd Rankin has obliterated the last three Surrey batsmen with the help of Jamie Pipe. I think that this shows the quality of his bowling today. The fact that 5 of his 6 wickets were caught behind the stumps. Bowling in the right areas will produce wickets no matter who the batsmen are and he even removed a middle stump from the ground. Salisbury was the first to go, he also attempted a hook shot too early in his innings and paid the price, Pipe gathered the ball well from just above his head and the collapse was on. The next wicket fell in the very same over.

Jimmy Ormond wafted at a wide one that kicked off the pitch and glided of the top edge of his bat into the waiting gloves of Pipe who seemed to take the catch away from first slip who wouldnt have been too happy if he dropped it.. but.. he didnt, so all is well :) This completed Boyds first every 5 wicket haul for derbysire, the first of many we hope and the team swamped him. He walked back to his mark with severly ruffled hair and a stinging back! Kevin Dean was brought back on for a bit of pace and t make it awkward for the tailenders to bat against a left armed seamer. He kept a tight over and paved the way for Boyd to finish of the innings.

The Surrey batsmen need to take a good long look at themselves for the next time they come out to bat because this performance was really abismall. Only 3 batsmen managed to score above 8 runs! Sarker knew the game was up and played a really lose shot to a Boyd Rankin bouncer that nipped away and found the edge. He hammered his at into the ground in disgust and rightly so. The Derbyshire boys looked elated as they retreated to the dressing room for their team talk. Steve Stubbings and Simon Katich would have to navigate one over before tea.
