Don Bradman Cricket 14 General Discussion

Thought I'd play this properly for the first time in a little while tonight... Set up the England and India lineups to match those of the 5th Test, played on Legend/Procam and was enjoying batting, hitting some nice shots, defending well, leaving a few... Got the partnership to about 45 in 10 overs... Then got out by silly mid off taking a nonchalant one-handed catch from a middled drive...

Alt+F4'd and went back to The Golf Club, which is excellent by the way.

If it's not silly mid off, it's short cover or short mid wkt or leg gully or forward square leg who will snaffle one handed catches off a shot which was nailed and should be going along the ground.

Yeah, both the shot and the fielder's reactions are just annoying.

The animation that plays when the catches are taken makes them look even more ridiculous, it's a sidestep and nonchalant grab, the one you can see at 0:15 and 0:33 in the following video when the bowler receives the ball;

The close fielders should be cowering for their lives, not plucking the ball out of the air like this with instantaneous reactions.

This and also smashing a ball past point or Sq Leg only to find the field then dives backwards, faster than the ball and making a catch! Never liked Super Heroes, I certainly don't want them playing cricket!

The thing is I thought that Patch 2 was meant to get rid of the super hero antics. The one handed catches in the short positions are very frustrating. And yet that very same fielder stands there like a statue you when the ball takes and edge, hits the body and pops up in the air.

It's why you need to take this feature description --

"Ball Physics giving realistic Edges, bat pad catches and movement off the pitch"

-- with a pinch of sodium chloride when it comes to cricket games.

They were toned down a lot for patch#2

I never played on the console so I can't compare. I still think it's an issue, especially - as noted above - in the way the short fielders catch the ball one handed. But others who have played the console may think differently.

It is an issue for sure, not disputing that at all, just pointing it out because Patch#2 was mentioned.

We were cautious with patch#2 because of time constraints.

Understood. I do remember you saying elsewhere that you were concerned that by toning the fielders down too much it could have unintended consequences. So understand the caution.

And thanks for the response.

Been sometime since we used to get Friday announcements from ross, so anything to look forward to this Friday ?

*fingers crossed for more bobble heads*

i've given this game a lot of criticism in the last few weeks, but to be fair, i think these issues can easily be avoided by the user... i find if they put those fielders there you just play forward defensives until they move them, or play other shots. it's annoying you have to do this, and needs fixing, but at the same time you shouldn't be getting out to them. (now the fact that you exploit the broken* AI field settings & changes to get around the stupid aerial shot system is obviously far from ideal... both need fixing post haste).

* @Biggs @barmyarmy - i use the term broken knowingly and intentionally: if all of the systems in the game were of the same standard as the AI it would not be fit for sale.

Well @MattW and I gave up on online for the first time in about a month tonight, because it was a clustertweak of tweakable proportions... all sorts of madness (see the video thread for one example). So my glass is half-empty tonight anyway.

That's the breaking point for me. When I bat I want to think like a batsman, not like a bug-tester. If there is a short cover, I pretty much cannot play on the offside. Why?

1) Straight drives go to the bowler on the full
2) Cover drives go to short cover on the full
3) Cut shots are rarely able to be played because the bowlers bowl too straight (that never got fixed)
