The Ashes 2010: First Test Edgbaston 16th to 20th July 2010
England In Tatters! Facing Heavy Defeat!
19th July 2010
From our Chief Cricket Correspondent Rick Adams

England won the toss and put Australia into bat.

Australia First Innings 412 all out (Ponting 134*, Katich 89) Anderson 4/126, Collingwood 2/2 England First Innings 357 all out off 93.1 overs (Collingwood* 124, Bell 70, Broad 37) Johnson 3/54 Australia Second Innings 343 all out (North 109, Hussey 69) Anderson 3/100, Collingwood 2/24 England Second Innings 97 for 5 (Strauss 41, Trott 40 ) Hilfenhaus 2/29 (8.0) Johnson 2/16 (7 overs)

10 Over Update (Overs 22-35)
Match Time: Day Four Second Session 15:01

England were left in serious trouble as Australia ripped through the fragile top-order once again. Johnson and Hilfenhaus put on a magnificent display of fast bowling to which England had no answers what-so-ever.

Ponting set attacking fields, letting the left-handed Johnson come across the right handers, whilst Hilfenhaus came into the right handers denying them any room with a good tight line that was McGrath like in its accuracy and monotonous excellence.

The strong off-side fields that Johnson had in place meant that England were forced to play across the line too often in a need to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Strauss, who hadn't looked comfortable against pace all day, struggled against both Johnson and Hilfenhaus but it was Johnson who got him, bowing his off stump as he looked to drive. Strauss connected to the ball but was a fraction late and sent the ball careering into his own stumps. He will be bitterly disappointed as he was looking to get himself set.

Pietersen came in under huge amounts of pressure. He has failed to deliver too often recently and there are voices being raised as to whether England's once so charismatic batsmen , really deserves a place at the moment at all.

He looked out of sorts as Johnson played consistently across him. One that nipped back in sharply caught him off guard and Thandi had no choice but to give him out, caught straight in front.

Pietersen thrives on the big moments and he will know that he has missed an opportunity to put himself and England back in a positive frame of mind.

Collingwood, coming off the back of his heroic century in the first innings, had it all to do once again, having to attempt to rescue an England's innings for the umpteenth time. He must be sick and tired of this situation that puts so much pressure on him to perform consistently well.

Trott's dismissal was the strangest of all we have seen today and a lapse of concentration that had seen him eek out 40 runs against a fearsome Aussie pace attack saw him top-edge a short ball going down leg-side that he could have left alone into the eager gloves of Brad Haddin who moved smartly to his left to take a superb one-handed catch as Trott looked on in desperation as his failed hook shot became his undoing.

Bell came into to join Collingwood and all English fans would have been hoping and praying for a revival of England's fortunes. however when things go bad they tend to go very bad. Collingwood nicked an out swinging ball to Clarke in the gully and he was on his way.

Matt Prior and Bell are the only obstruction in the way of an Australian victory that seems inevitable and if one is honest, fully deserved.

they have played the better cricket, been tactically more aware, used the pitch to their benefit and shown that they are ruthless. When they smell a chance the foot is on the throat and players are left wondering what hit them.

In a spell of bowling that saw England go from a comfortable looking 72 for 1 to a mind-numbingly desperate 97 for 5 in a 3 or 4 over spell will leave many at Edgbaston wondering what hit them as well!

Scorecard to follow!

FOW: 0 73 79 93 93

England trail by 301 runs with 5 wickets remaining!

Haha wished i'd have put a bet on when the match finishes now. Last ball of Day 5 England somehow scraping along at 2.34 runs an over, draw is in sight then boom bell falls onto his on wickets ;)

I would imagine that if Bell is still there at that moment scoring at just over 2 an over a few people in the crowd might throw him onto his own stumps for him!

Trouble with Bell is that even if he does fall onto his own stumps, he usually misses! (Oooh, get him girls!:p)

10 Over Update (Overs 35 41.4)
Match Time: Day Four Second Session 15:26

England were left utterly mesmerized as the Australian bowling machine waltzed over them in the second innings. the gulf in class was frightening and England will be embarrassed with a display that took them from 72 for 1 to 135 all out.

Some desperately out of form batting from the English top order lead them to their downfall but credit has to go the Australian bowlers who made life misery for the English as they struggle to come with pace, swing and bounce that they themselves had not been able to find in this pitch.

Hilfenhaus was named man of the match as he bowled a superb spell to rip the heart out of the English line-up. His final short spell was frightening. In three point four overs he took 4 for 7 as he swung and bounced the ball to single handedly destroy the English middle order and tail.

Only Swann offered token resistance.

The ball of the day was bowled to Broad. Hilfenhaus, already utterly unplayable, swung one into Broad, it dipped into Broad as he pushed forward in desperate defense. The ball was passed him before he had time to put some wood in the way and the ball knocked off leg stump with a bemused Broad only able to nod his head in appreciation as he left the pitch.

By the time Broad had departed the Edgbaston crowd had been witness to a fine spell of quick, venomous bowling from both Johnson and Hilfenhaus, which had seen the swift departure of Bell and Prior, both caught in the slips off very fast balls from Hilfenhaus and Bollinger respectively.

It must be such a great thing as a captain to be able to throw the ball to any one of your bowlers and just wait for the inevitable.

Anderson and Onions were just small role spelers in the Hilfenhaus show as he had them both caught in the slips by a delighted Ponting.

He was unplayable and unfathomable at times.

England have some serious work to do before the start of the next test in a weeks time.

A typically diplomatic Strauss admitted that the team had been outclassed bu the Australians but that "the team needed to take some positives from the game".

Where these positives were to be found no one quite knows! Collingwood showed signs of form as did Bell. The bowlers kept to their task well and bowled good line and length. The real worry for England is of course the failure of the top-order. You can bowl as well as you like but if you can't put runs on the board you will not win test matches.

England will be off to lick their wounds. Australia will be delighted to be 1-0 up. A delighted Ricky Ponting summed it all up when he said: "Of course we are happy, but to be frank, we expected the match to go this way!"

Who or what will or can stop the Australian Juggernaut? A question nobody in England seems to know the answer to!

FOW: 0 73 79 93 93 111 111 113 132 132

Australia win by 266 runs to go 1-0 up in the five match series.
